I agree with lots of theses views. DP was saying to me the other day my views are a weird mixture, and it made me think that I'm not tribal in these things and try and look at the issues, albeit through vaguely pinko liberal view.

SudokuBook · 08/06/2020 10:31

I agree with you re unions @Nihiloxica. Turkeys voting for Christmas.

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 08/06/2020 10:32

I'm left wing and a great believer tin the benefits of EU membership, but I also think people should have freedom to assess risk and get back out there with support from the government to protect people who are most at risk. I don't believe in a petty dictatorship where childhood, education and our most basic freedoms are curtailed.

I'm so sorry to hear about the redundancies. It is just devastating when you thought things were going ok to have the rug pulled out from under you. The government really needs to reopen the UK and stimulate demand to try to avoid the worse. I feel like I'm screaming in the wind.

Staunch remainer too: I'd like fewer borders in the world not more.

This is not going well for me 😃

Dowser · 08/06/2020 10:32

Gene genie, my son had to go onto uc when he lost his job.
Thank god he got this one in care...which he happens to love, because the ends weren’t meeting at all, they racked up debt with their rent and i baled them out with new fridge freezer and other odds and sods. They are just about on their feet but I do worry if they’d rented in the private sector what wouldVe haOpened. First their rent would’ve been £2-300 a month more and a private landlord wouldn’t have been so generous in waiting for their rent...maybe

LivinLaVidaLoki · 08/06/2020 10:35

I can't help but get pissed off when people go on about local "outbreaks"
PHE define outbreak as two or more people who have developed the same or similar conditions from the same source or location. Two. Its hardly massive is it.
Also "local lockdown" like itll involve closing your town off....
Then they get pissed off that it's just closing and isolating the source. Like at Weston hospital.
I genuinely dont know what dementors want, I just know they want more of it.
Whatever it is.

KatsutheClockworkOctopus · 08/06/2020 10:35

There is definitely a reluctance to publish news that is positive. Yesterday I had a look at the BBC to see how they were reporting the low daily death figures across the UK. Their headline? "Global death toll reaches 400,000".
It would be funny how determined they are to be negative, if it wasn't having such devastating effects.

rosettesforjill · 08/06/2020 10:35

I'm a Remainer. Labour voter but held my nose in the last election as I'm really not a fan of Momentum (although I've never had a massive problem with Jeremy Corbyn himself).

I think Keir Starmer would have done a far better job of Covid than Boris.

Dowser · 08/06/2020 10:38

Wow nihil.
My sons Union were useless over a matter at work that should’ve easily been cleared up and left him and a colleague dismissed.
Thankfully he’s much happier in his carer role and gets to sleep in his own bed each night and looks healthier too.
He can manage his own time and as long as he fulfills his role, which he does and the clients love himToo, all is well.

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 08/06/2020 10:38

I'm so sorry Trapped. That's so unfair.

Many of my Remain friends are very pro there being a universal income and would argue right now that the economy could be saved (and we could stay on lockdown FOREVER) if a permanent one was introduced. But that overlooks the fact that many love their jobs and have worked hard to build a fulfilling career. Jobs give you so much more than money don't they?

Ghostlyglow · 08/06/2020 10:38

Remainder. I think Anyone would be doing a better job than Boris Johnson.

Ghostlyglow · 08/06/2020 10:39

I meant remainer, obviously 🤣

BarkandCheese · 08/06/2020 10:41

@Ghostlyglow

Remainder. I think Anyone would be doing a better job than Boris Johnson.
This is very true. I’d take any government from the last thirty years, either labour or Tory, over our current shower of shite.
Ghostlyglow · 08/06/2020 10:44

I work for the NHS and am wfh. Our department, not going to say which, does not have enough work (not going into detail but the lack of work is a by- product of Covid). The must be redundancies coming because lots of us are sat here doing stupid stuff basically just passing the time. I wish they'd just get on with it to be honest.

rosettesforjill · 08/06/2020 10:47

@ghostlyglow agreed... it's what happens when you pick a cabinet based on blind loyalty to Brexit rather than actual skill, experience and general intelligence 🙃

HauntedGoatFart · 08/06/2020 10:54

It's funny how this has made me think about politics. I voted Remain and still feel leaving the EU will be a net loss for the country, although I accept the legitimacy of the vote and therefore the need to Leave. I would describe myself as centre-Left values wise although I no longer feel aligned to any actual party. I also believe passionately in being guided by science and accepted lockdown initially. But this situation has made me think a lot about liberty and value it a lot more. I will be much, much more reluctant to cede liberty for any reason in future, and my views have shifted in that way. I think this situation is also highlighting the fact that "science" is not a monolith, that individual scientists and disciplines all have at best a piece of the puzzle, that access to and criticism of the data that sits behind this is essential, and also that the scientific illiteracy of the media is both shocking and a serious problem.

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 08/06/2020 10:56

Surely to have a basic income you need a functioning economy? I just want the country to lift its eyes beyond COVID and mice forward. We can mourn our losses, but we need a future otherwise what’s the point?

In other news the need the schools back to absorb some of dd’s words. I love her dearly but she doesn’t distinguish between thoughts and speaking!

OP posts:
dkl55 · 08/06/2020 10:58

I was initially feeling positive about Keir but he's a bit full on the lockdown is easing too soon is he not?

rosettesforjill · 08/06/2020 10:59

@hauntedgoatfart I was talking to DH about scientific illiteracy and the lack of understanding about risk as well. I'm arts background so don't feel particularly qualified to comment, but he's a scientist turned actuary so he really gets both sides. I actually think prioritising the public understanding risk is more important than them understanding "the science". Nothing is ever going to be zero risk and I genuinely don't think a lot of people get that.

Dowser · 08/06/2020 10:59

So very sorry Trapped and any one else in this sinking boat.
We’ve got to end lockdown..right now.
Give people their lives back and their way of supporting them whatever that might be.

( I’ve woken up late this morning. Poorly last night) and have started to read from the end back over, so just catching up)

Nihiloxica · 08/06/2020 11:03

I actually think prioritising the public understanding risk is more important than them understanding "the science".

Totally agree.

I've thought this for a long time and it is so much more important now.

According to many of the arguments being advanced about Covid we should never have left our homes and socialised in the past.

heroku · 08/06/2020 11:04

the scientific illiteracy of the media is both shocking and a serious problem

Yes this. I'd also add in the scientific illiteracy of most senior politicians. We desperately need more STEM degrees in these positions.

BarkandCheese · 08/06/2020 11:05

The problem with only following the science is you don’t take the people into consideration. If we followed nothing but the science on climate control we would all end up living pre industrial revolution style lives, great for the planet but not so great for the humans.

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 08/06/2020 11:09

Definitely. Someone posted this article on risk here in a previous thread and I found it fascinating www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-52758024

OP posts:
Littlebelina · 08/06/2020 11:15

Scientific illiteracy full stop is a massive issue. We need to stop treating STEM subjects as a chore and something that only geeks and nerds care about and start properly educating children in them (means getting back in school first). Some of the posts I've seen here and on sm are shocking (not just the "prolockdown" side tbf but these have been more prevalent). Risk assessment education would be good as well- it is common sense but that is sorely lacking as well.
