Omg the scenes from the London protests

I'm just watching the news and am finding it so frightening to see the crowds, the police, the tension, the horse bolting.
I understand the desire to protest but how is this the right way to do things? I know there will be thousands of peaceful protesters among the ones causing trouble.
I'm concerned about the covid risk to everyone there especially as BAME are more at risk of the virus.

I hate confrontation and get very anxious so wanted to chat to others about this. Yes, I could switch off but I think it's important to watch and learn and understand what and why is happening.

Has racism killed 40,000 people in the space of 3 months?!

How many of the 40,000 were BAME and how many of those BAME victims had racism as a factor in their deaths? How many BAME women have died in childbirth in the UK compared to white women?

The ignorance is fucking astounding. Covid deaths are not the only deaths that are important right now.

Rocaille · 06/06/2020 21:22

What about the elderly and vulnerable? And HCPs in the NHS? Zero shits given there?

Why should BAME people prioritise those people over their own communities?

Because like it or not, we are going through this pandemic together and we've already lost 40,000 people in harrowing circumstances over recent weeks. Many more loved ones will die in the weeks to come unless we all work together to shield one another from the virus. Isn't this just basic human decency, as well as being a matter of mutual self-interest?!

BeijingBikini · 06/06/2020 21:23

Democracy has to be prioritised over everything else. Yes, including people's lives.

I hope you've been fervently anti-lockdown the whole way through Covid then, gone to the anti-lockdown protest and donated to the crowdfunder suing the government for implementing a lockdown. If democracy > lives then it can't be for one cause yet not another.

NowImLivinInExeter · 06/06/2020 21:23

*Isn't this just basic human decency, as well as being a matter of mutual self-interest?!

And how much basic human decency do you think BAME are afforded over the course of their lives in the West?

NowImLivinInExeter · 06/06/2020 21:24

I have been.

HedgehogDramas · 06/06/2020 21:24

@CantSayJack I'd have thought that ALL LIVES MATTER quite obviously included Black lives - hence the word ALL????

TerrapinStation · 06/06/2020 21:24

@NowImLivinInExeter

snowballer

They have decided that the protest is worth the risk.

I know it is hard for others to understand given the utter hysteria whipped up by the media regarding an illness that everyone is more likely to survive than not, but actually for some of us there are more important, more scary things going on right now than covid 19.

They have decided the risk is worth it for them , I haven't seen a justification of the risk to the other people they come into contact with who are minimising their own risk but have to work or shop for food
022828MAN · 06/06/2020 21:24

Covid deaths are not the only deaths that are important right now.

Nor are racist attacks.

Both are terrible.

Let's do our best to reduce both.

Stop gathering in groups.

MadameMarie · 06/06/2020 21:25

@CantSayJack

For those who say “all lives matter”, give it a rest. If ALL lives matter, then so do Black lives.
The biggest danger to black people in London is knife crime.
curtainsforme · 06/06/2020 21:26

Why not copy a url then?

Initially because i had no idea how to make a video from twitter app go onto Mumsnet app. Now I won't post one because you are goading me to do so. Fuck that. The footage is out there so I'm baffled as to how you can say it's not happening. Whether I post a video or not won't change that.

gypsywater · 06/06/2020 21:26

Surely this is just trolling now???

justanotherneighinparadise · 06/06/2020 21:26

This is a moment in time for black people to have their voices heard. Let them be heard FFS.

'They are angry. They watched a recording of a man have a knee pressed into his neck, they listened to him say repeatedly he couldn't breathe. For 9 fucking minutes. George Floyd is now dead.'

Like Tony Timpa? A white man who died while being pinned down. Police brutality in the US is shocking, as demonstrated by George Floyd's murder but also Timpa and the white 75yr old knocked unconscious yesterday.

FabulouslyElegantTits · 06/06/2020 21:27

I've posted one of the videos that people are talking about.

I feel sickened. Sickened by the murder of George Floyd, sickened by the realisation that black people feel such inequality that they resort to the scenes we're seeing, sickened that this is already decimating the BLM cause .... and sickened that the R rate is on the up

Time to step away from the news I think.

RoosterPie · 06/06/2020 21:27

Democracy has to be prioritised over everything else. Yes, including people's lives

So if these were BNP protests you would support the rights of the protesters to be out there as ardently? Because democratically, the subject matter of the protest makes no difference to the right to do so.

I personally take a different view. I think as PP says democracy has been somewhat overtaken by a lockdown but the important subject matter of these protests is a highly relevant factor in assessing if they’re justified.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 06/06/2020 21:27

Now is not the time for mass protests. In two or three weeks time, people will start to die because of these protests. Probably more people than have died in police custody this year.

Oh right, you mean like those massive spikes we saw after Easter and VE day.

SimonJT · 06/06/2020 21:29

@MexicanStyle

Oh come on most of the protests were peaceful. If you want evidence of one, go on Anthony Joshua’s Instagram and he went live for 2 hours during the protest and there was no violence whatsoever
Sadly people will ignore it because it doesn’t align with their views of people of colour.
Jillyhilly · 06/06/2020 21:30

It's exactly what the far right want, people turning against each other

It’s exactly what the far left want, too.

snappycamper · 06/06/2020 21:31

All those people crowded together and posters are worried about the horses Hmm

CantSayJack · 06/06/2020 21:32

hedgehog yeah ok Hmm

Flutteryb · 06/06/2020 21:32

What were people doing on VE day? I know some people went wild after an 8 person conga line, where was the congregation of thousands of people?
