Omg the scenes from the London protests

I'm just watching the news and am finding it so frightening to see the crowds, the police, the tension, the horse bolting.
I understand the desire to protest but how is this the right way to do things? I know there will be thousands of peaceful protesters among the ones causing trouble.
I'm concerned about the covid risk to everyone there especially as BAME are more at risk of the virus.

I hate confrontation and get very anxious so wanted to chat to others about this. Yes, I could switch off but I think it's important to watch and learn and understand what and why is happening.

They’re really not rioting, if you’re so convinced London has riots right now why have you failed to show anyone?

Don't be so bloody goady. I already said I can't place a video. It's not difficult to look it up though. It is still happening whether I post a video to prove it or not. I'm stunned that you are so determined there are no riots when the footage is all over the internet of just that. Riots.

OhTheRoses · 06/06/2020 21:13

The black people I know haven't lived in fear since the day they were born. They are good, hardworking people with good, hard working parents who rant at their dc, tell them to behave and work hard.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 06/06/2020 21:13

'The message I took from that thread, and now from this one, is that if you are concerned about the COVID risk, you are racist.'

Yes we're all racists who need to 'check ourselves' .

We are all worried sick about family and friends and the virus but somehow should applaud 'protestors' attacking the police and defacing monuments.

snowballer · 06/06/2020 21:14

What about the elderly and vulnerable? And HCPs in the NHS? Zero shits given there?*

Why should BAME people prioritise those people over their own communities?*

That's a crazy statement to make on the basis that BAME people also become elderly and vulnerable and also work in the NHS

You can easily copy the url of any videos online, you could even do a screen shot so people can find it.
bonsaidragon · 06/06/2020 21:15

A horse has been attacked, nevermind.
A police officer thrown from his horse, nevermind.
Thousands at risk of coronavirus because these people want to protest, nevermind.

I no longer care about the lives of the individual people who have done that. I have not seen the footage so I don't know if they are Asian, White, Black or spotted green and purple, they are not people with a life I will care about.

BackInTime · 06/06/2020 21:15

Why are we taking Trumps USA crap and making it ours? Yes we have some pretty big issues here but they are not the same as the USA. The virus right now is our main enemy and this is what we should be focusing on because if we don't beat this soon we will all be suffering a lot more than we have ever known before. Trump has welcomed the riots as a distraction from his poor handling of the virus crisis so not let this happen here.

Tonz · 06/06/2020 21:15

They are angry. They watched a recording of a man have a knee pressed into his neck, they listened to him say repeatedly he couldn't breathe. For 9 fucking minutes. George Floyd is now dead. They have had enough. They can't wait until covid is over and we have forgotten. I will be with them tomorrow. I will wear my mask and keep my distance and I will shout Black lives matter as loud as I can for as long as I can. Because they do.

NowImLivinInExeter · 06/06/2020 21:16

snowballer

They have decided that the protest is worth the risk.

I know it is hard for others to understand given the utter hysteria whipped up by the media regarding an illness that everyone is more likely to survive than not, but actually for some of us there are more important, more scary things going on right now than covid 19.

curtainsforme · 06/06/2020 21:16

Do you really think i haven't posted a video because there are none?

GetOffYourHighHorse · 06/06/2020 21:18

'no longer care about the lives of the individual people who have done that. I have not seen the footage so I don't know if they are Asian, White, Black or spotted green and purple, they are not people with a life I will care about.'

Let's hope they are ok. How sad not to care about someone injured while others cheered and laughed.

HedgehogDramas · 06/06/2020 21:19

@Tonz Well good for you. As long as you will still be shouting that actually ALL LIVES MATTER when the second spike happens with or without your fucking mask.

GoodbyePorpoiseSpit · 06/06/2020 21:19

There are no riots.
There are peaceful protesters
There are angry, violent protesters
There are bullshit agitators with no business but trouble.
I stand with BLM and for me, this uprising is what’s needed. It is long overdue, we need to face up to our unjust society. Fur many black people this IS life or death.

SusieOwl4 · 06/06/2020 21:19

@NowImLivinInExeter

So if things are so bad in this country why no massive protests before ?

Why now ?!

CantSayJack · 06/06/2020 21:19

Black people have had enough of being brutalised by the Police.
Let’s not pretend it doesn’t happen in the UK.
The Police should not have been charging at crowds with horses, that is never going to end well for them or the horses.

People don’t feel like they can do nothing and the majority were protesting peacefully.
Yes there is a pandemic but the worst pandemic is racism.

022828MAN · 06/06/2020 21:20

but actually for some of us there are more important, more scary things going on right now than covid 19

Has racism killed 40,000 people in the space of 3 months?!

MadameMarie · 06/06/2020 21:20

The whole thing is insane. What the hell are they playing at? The pandemic hasn't stopped for them.

Because the murder of George Floyd has been a catalyst, just as there was a catalyst for the women's marches. It isn't that complicated to understand, unless of course you're deliberately being obtuse.

NowImLivinInExeter · 06/06/2020 21:21

It's exactly what the far right want, people turning against each other

CantSayJack · 06/06/2020 21:22

For those who say “all lives matter”, give it a rest.
If ALL lives matter, then so do Black lives.

GoodbyePorpoiseSpit · 06/06/2020 21:22

Lots of people on the thread have said a variation of ‘this is America’s problem’ You seriously need to wise up.
Plus, just because you haven’t experienced something —because, white privilege— doesn’t mean it isn’t valid.

mynameiscalypso · 06/06/2020 21:22

I think it's so odd that people - by which I mean white people really - can't see that acknowledging that there is systemic and deep rooted racial inequality in society is not the same as saying that all white people are racist. The vast majority of people are, I would hope, not overtly racist but that doesn't mean that we don't live in a society where BAME have disproportionately poor health/education/lifestyle/economic outcomes for a whole host of reasons.
