The ‘sorry guys’ thing is up there with ‘am I the only one who?’

Oh thank goodness, I thought I was the only one to be annoyed with 'am I the only one?' Wink

The five miles thing is a guideline in Scotland just to stop everyone going off to holiday/tourist spots. Not the law. And honestly some of these places are less than ten miles away.

HesterShaw1 · 07/06/2020 11:16

Has this been linked to? Published in today's Grauniad, usually the dementor's publication of choice.

@Cattermole what was all the fuss about with the Jelbert's ice cream, clotted cream and flake? Is there some Thing about mixing dairy produce I wasnt aware of?

Dowser · 07/06/2020 11:18

Just googled Dumfries and Galloway. Thought it sounded familiar. Yes, I’ve been there, don’t think I’ve stayed there, unless ayr is in it.

You know, I’m not really into politics and neither is dh but we do sit and wonder ( wool gather more like) why wales and Scotland appear to have embraced this lockdown far more severely than England..
There’s big remote areas in both countries ( and uk too for that matter) , small populations apart from the cities, I don’t know, wool gathering again, but it just seems crazy to tank a country’s economy when there’s so many rural areaS where you lucky to meet a deer let alone another human.
It doesn’t make sense to treat all areas the same, which is just awful for the city dwellers I know but hopefully the city dwellers have more hospitals and facilities anyway than the rural folk.

Sorry, I’m rabbiting a bit.

TheGreatWave · 07/06/2020 11:23

Clotted cream doesn't belong on an ice-cream, but then again I live in the land of yellow tops so what do I know.

I love yellow tops. Few people seem to know what they are though and certainly not in this zone of the world.
They remind me of the day I got sunburned at Redcar... I think it was sunburn although it was sunny enough to have a dip in the sea Grin

TheGreatWave · 07/06/2020 11:29

What a lovely bitter sweet story.

5 miles in Wales is bonkers, that's barely to a next door neighbour in some places.

Unfortunately my favourite beaches are in Wales and I can't face the effort to flock to Skeggy Grin

Willitneverend · 07/06/2020 11:30

@Dowser - it is a bit strange. I think in Scotland it's a combination of the more mental wing of the SNP, a dose of Presbyterianism and more legitimate fears about limited medical facilities in rural areas.

Dumfries and Galloway is lovely, I want to go there so much! Ayr is in the council just to the north.

There was an awful story in the papers yesterday that people on the islands can't travel to see family on the mainland. Someone tried to do a non essential trip by hiding in a car boot on the Arran ferry and got grassed up. All the dementors were all over it calling whoever did it selfish, but I imagine they'd have been pushed pretty hard to even attempt that.

Cattermole · 07/06/2020 11:38

@HesterShaw1 I'm guessing there was something about dolloping clotted cream with a spoon on the ice cream? maybe? not sure, I couldn't work it out except that one person had been outraged and so poor Jelberts were very apologetic.
To be fair I've never had one - I mean I live next door to a lady who runs a beach cafe so I'm kind of honour bound to go there when I feel the need for ice cream. Or Moomaid of Zennor at Porthtowan....

Cattermole · 07/06/2020 11:40

Come on GreatWave and BogRoll - what's a yellow top?

SeaOtterFluff · 07/06/2020 11:42

I'm so glad there is safe space to share these murderous thoughts. I am heartily sick of all of the obsession with infection and germ sharing, I just want to pop to the shop this morning for bread and bacon but I can't face the queue. I'm still going out to work as usual and my normally lovely manager has lost the plot and can talk about nothing except masks and Boris prioritising the economy over people's lives. My teenage children are being remarkably stoic but are missing their friends, their freedom and are sick of each other (one is furloughed from a much-loved apprenticeship, one home from uni and one not doing GCSEs).
I can't get my head around the school situation. When mine were at primary school we'd regularly get norovirus or chicken pox outbreaks but at no point did any parent demand the school shut for 48 hours to clear the infection...

Nihiloxica · 07/06/2020 11:42

Yes, what is a yellow top and how can I get one?

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 07/06/2020 11:42

Checking in, still angry.

I sometimes think this all might be worth it if we use it to get rid of nits.

Our school had a scarlet fever outbreak before Christmas. Reception had 16 people off at the same time with it. Over 50 people in the school had it at one point, including DD1’s year 1 teacher. DD1 was hospitalised with it. Schools did not close. No extra cleaning was done.

juggler82 · 07/06/2020 11:45

Hi, another lurker here, thank you for keeping me sane. I have a pre-schooler and a yr 1, and I'm desperate to get some normality back for them. We're in the northwest of England, currently dementor central because by one calculation the R has gone marginally above 1. The Northwest stretches from the top of English Midlands all the way up to the Scottish border - it's a huge geographical area. Cases in my county are steadily dropping, but their return to school is now in doubt because of the whole region's average? It's nonsensical. Especially when there are known hotspots that are driving the R up. Arggghhhh.

Drivingdownthe101 · 07/06/2020 11:46

Unfortunately Nihiloxica the people who don’t treat nits normally won’t bother now either! My best friend is a child protection social worker and she says some of the children she visits have them visibly crawling across their foreheads, they’re so infested with them. So sad Sad.

Cattermole · 07/06/2020 11:47

Well, wish me luck. DS is going back to school tomorrow. I'm actually going to miss him, watching his appalling cartoons on Netflix with a constant running commentary on the matter of Grizzly & The Lemmings... thumping about in his bedroom like he's going to come through the ceiling...leaving Lego all over the house.
I know he needs to, but I will miss him when he's gone.

Dowser · 07/06/2020 11:49

Yellow tops were sold in an ice cream parlour in Redcar.
The yellow top is a sorbet that’s quite tart
So goes very nicely with the sweeter ice cream
I want one!

BogRollBOGOF · 07/06/2020 11:53

That mawkish painting is amazing... bad amazing... there was a lot of spectacularly hideous NHS themed stuff a while ago but somehow I sensed that the public mood wasn't favourable to critiques Grin It really belongs with the Vogon poetry. I haven't seen much of that for a while, but I have used the snooze button quite vigorously...

My DCs are unlikely to see their octogenarian granny this year. She's past 85 and at the niggly ailments stage. We last went over in October, and I'd be surprised if we make it over before Easter (we avoid winter normally) I have suggested DH travel over sooner if the situation seems appropriate, but she's quite risk adverse anyway without any of us risking picking up the virus on our travels and sharing. Lets hope she keeps on going... her mother made it to 96, but there never are any guarentees.

They haven't seen any extended family since Christmas between distance, health, the weather, and timing of lockdown. They're all a bit far to take a gamble on sitting outside in decent weather. My family tend to do occasional bigger gatherings. DM is being cagey following 10 days in hospital in Feb (last time I saw her)

The trouble is if I invite BiL up to sit in the garden, do I still have to clean the house to BiL standard? 'Tis a conundrum Grin
Moot point as 4+4= too many and BiL is very law abiding.

Nihiloxica · 07/06/2020 11:54

OMG that sounds amazing.

I don't even know where Redcar is, but I'm on my way.

Unfortunately I already know. My kid's bestie always has them. I think she might have brought them back into our house.

It was a nice dream for a while.

When people were wanging on about "a slower pace of life" I was thinking "no more constant combing". Grin
