I think the masks are just a bone to keep baying dementor occupied. There isn't another Bank Holiday until August, after all.

TheMurk · 06/06/2020 00:09

Wow that’s interesting.

Flies in the face of how the media has played the mask thing.

SudokuBook · 06/06/2020 01:10

The masks dementors are doing my head in

Orangeblossom78 · 06/06/2020 05:20

Oh dear it's all kicking off round here!

Sleeping in a bath of pillows could be a solution! Hmm

Orangeblossom78 · 06/06/2020 05:24

I had seen those things lying around, like sodastream canisters

Orangeblossom78 · 06/06/2020 05:24

Do you reckon it is to encourage people back to work on public transport? the masks I mean.

Orangeblossom78 · 06/06/2020 05:27

Definitely. I reckon this is a ploy to manipulate people into not going out over the weekend. Crank up the fear and hope it holds over the weekend

Yes- remember when the restrictions were lifted slightly on a Sunday evening, there was a brief positivity in the papers around Thurs and then it all went negative again the Fri/Sat...

Orangeblossom78 · 06/06/2020 05:29

SudukoBook my sons are like this too (11 and 15) youngest been in tears at not having down it all- mind you in his case despite the teachers saying it is not compulsory to do it all. 15 year old has a lot and they chase up me with emails etc too. It feels like a lot of pressure and screen time. 11 yr old in school from next week but even then have a laptop to work on at school doing the same Teams work there too. Sad

Orangeblossom78 · 06/06/2020 05:44

Dorset
Beautiful county
Friend there is shielding.
Normally quite gung-ho
I don’t think we’ll be welcome there either

We have been there, to Studland bay recently, it was fine, NT, didn't bother us, quite quiet too. Local shop fine too

Bellesavage · 06/06/2020 06:39

Ah I've found my people.

Finding today hard. It's the weekend, it's sunny, I want to go out for a meal, go to he library, go swimming, but I'm stuck in my cul de sac on repeat. My dd is 10 months old and has barely seen anyone outside her family, has never had an illness(!) and is bored. My ds wants to go to the park but he
can't because apparently car showrooms are THE priority right now because we all have so much driving we need to be doing Hmm he's back at school on Monday but only with 5 in a class and has to sit apart like some kind of leper even though he has statistically pretty much no chance of being affected by this. More chance of being knocked out by a drunk seagull on the way to school ffs.

I feel so sad about it all.

RubberDinghyRapids · 06/06/2020 06:47

There's definitely some anti-dementors in Dorset Wink

Unfortunately we have beaches, which as we know increase the risk of transmission by 200% because they are frivolous and fun, so much alarmist meme-making gets made about them.

I welcome all visitors. As long as you put your litter in a bin and stack any disposable bbqs next to the bins (there's always some morons who bury them in the sand where they stay nice and hot for someone to walk on Hmm)

Orangeblossom78 · 06/06/2020 06:55

The number of flights operating at UK airports this week jumped to its highest since the lockdown began on March 23, at almost 900 flights a day. This includes some from coronavirus hotspots such as the US, and Italy.

Passengers described their relief at entering the UK before arrivals are required to self-isolate for two weeks.

www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/thousands-pour-in-to-beat-coronavirus-isolation-27wwfwd0k

Hmm. Think this might impact the "R" more than people staying home from the beach perhaps Hmm

Orangeblossom78 · 06/06/2020 07:09

I find Dorset much more relaxing than either Devon or Cornwall. Lovely area.

rookiemere · 06/06/2020 07:15

Sudokubook sorry for your DS, sounds so similar to the way DS has his work presented, great big dollops of subjects with differing deadlines, that even an adult would find hard to coordinate.

Meanwhile- and I'm sure it's just a perception issue - the head of senior school who lives on our street, seems to have time for daily lengthy cycle rides with his family.

if its any consolation at DS school they don't start any S3 work until next term so provided the schools actually plan on doing some face to face teaching in their blended learning next term, there should be ample time to learn the subject then, despite what that teacher is saying.

BillywilliamV · 06/06/2020 07:20

I work in a medical industry, lots of doctors. Social distancing but no masks at work because wearing masks for long periods of time is pointless and dangerous.
DH's engineering company has made them compulsory in the office..go figure?

LivinLaVidaLoki · 06/06/2020 07:22

I watched the briefing last night and have to admit I laughed hard when Matt Wanksock answered a question with "and on the first part of your question, well, errrr, its errrr, well, hmmm I've forgotten what your question is sorry"
Though I was impressed that multiple times he said the R number is calculated by various models and each model gives a different answer so you've to assess them all, but most importantly we can see the infection rate falling as the positive tests in the community are falling. Even the ONS data. And they are based on actual tests, and actual data, not models.

userxx · 06/06/2020 07:22

@Bellesavage Sunny? Jesus Christ, it's torrential here.

Bellesavage · 06/06/2020 07:24

We had that yesterday, today is lovely! But with nowhere to go it'll probably be a day of family arguments instead because I'm no good at being a Pinterest mum and doing bloody family Olympics and craft.

userxx · 06/06/2020 07:34

@Bellesavage It must be so hard with little ones, when it all gets too much for me I just take myself into the garden and drink large glasses of wine to get through it!

My sil is concerned her baby will be clingy as she's had no social interaction with other people. Such a shame.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 06/06/2020 07:37

I know it's bad form to quote posts here, but bloody hell it takes a special talent to turn good news like the "infection rate has fallen significantly" into we need to stay at home for the rest of the year.

"With 60,000 people currently infected and a 25% weekly decay rate, which may get worse in coming weeks, the total should fall by another 75% in 5 weeks.

If the 75% rate continues, in five months we would have 100 infections.

However that's five months behaving like now. And that 100 could potentially go back to millions infected within a month if we behaved as before.

So there does not seem to be any possible way to return behaviour to 'normal' in 2020. Absolutely no way."

Bellesavage · 06/06/2020 07:37

I'm genuinely worried that my youngest needs to get ill to exercise her immune system and she's not had any cold or sniffle. I've taken to going to Tesco's, picking up the un-wiped trollies and encouraging her to lick the handles.

Cattermole · 06/06/2020 07:38

@HesterShaw1 - the usual high-class publication down here, where people routinely call each other "nob" in the comments?
Fortunately it's cold so we're going to go off and murder a few people on the newly-opened farmer's market!

Orangeblossom78 · 06/06/2020 07:41

So do they want us to stay home indefinitely until it completely dies out and there is no risk at all - totally safe I guess? As many seem to show no symptoms don't think that will happen though will it. I thought we were taking the approach of keeping it in check and learning to live with it

LivinLaVidaLoki · 06/06/2020 07:43

It's odd though as they are discussing the r number and blaming it on tourists, day trippers and people enjoying the sunshine particularly on a bank holiday.
But infections are down.....proving none of these things have ended the world.

Drivingdownthe101 · 06/06/2020 07:45

Bellesavage my 16 month old hasn’t had a cold since last winter and Im really worried about the effects on his immune system! It’s not normal for babies/toddlers to not be exposed to germs.
