I just had a browse of one of the mask threads.
In the interests of public safety, I felt obliged to point out that if they are worried that they might catch COVID19, why do they think giving themselves respiratory, central nervous system and kidney damage from inhaling phenols all day is going to be any better?

Firefliess · 05/06/2020 09:04

I'm not really too fussed about face masks tbh. If they allow me to do the things I really want to do. It's all a bit academic though when I am working from home and you're not supposed to use public transport unless it's essential. Good if other people use them though and that allows the r rate to stay low and more rules to be relaxed.

Everythingsgoingmyway · 05/06/2020 09:06

@Littlebelina The guidance has changed for keyworkers and are now actively encouraged to send their DC to school even if they could stay home.

Orangeblossom78 · 05/06/2020 09:10

Living in the city centre, I can walk most places as it is smallish, like to school and shops, DH drives so think we can avoid it mainly.

Orangeblossom78 · 05/06/2020 09:12

Right, you know the shielding guidance says for those with e.g. terminal illness they do have the choice to follow it, I guess that would go for dementia also, so therefore they can choose to do as they wish

But then there are the general 'rules' too. It gets confusing, but I think those people should be able to choose

Drivingdownthe101 · 05/06/2020 09:14

I don’t even know why I’m arguing over facemasks, I haven’t used public transport for years! It’s the principle I guess!

Think it's the crowing and the "we were right" type cheers that are pissing me off over masks. That and the fact I'll have to wear one to get the train.

If someone has advanced dementia and is in a care home they’ll be under the denial of liberties thing which means they no longer have the right to make decisions for themselves.

Also @Littlebelina, the more kids back at school the better for those currently excluded from school, because it reasserts that going to school is normal.

Anyone who judges a parent for sending a school age child to school has serious issues.

This, with bells on.

Absolutely. As we've said before, FOMO will be the undoing of a lot of dementors. The more of their kids' friends are in school, having fun, seeing friends, learning, the more jealousy will creep in and they'll quietly abandon their "not until a vaccine!" mantra.

KaronAVyrus · 05/06/2020 09:25

If it hadn’t been for this thread I really think I would have deleted the Mumsnet app. The dementoring on this site is out of control.

MagdaS · 05/06/2020 09:26

I bet most people don’t think I’m a key worker either, but I am due to seniority and my role in the management team rather than profession. The school certainly asked a lot of questions before giving them a place.

I'm personally not too bothered for the shorter train and bus journeys but can see it being an issue for the longer 3 - 5 hour or rare even longer journeys we make for holidays and visting family.

Though several of us have asthma so there's a get out but get the impression they were thinking about the Tube and shorter daily commutes.

The Today program seemed to be pushing for them in shops as well this morning.

I think I'll be getting neck gaiters as I think they'll be more bearable.

SomewhereEast · 05/06/2020 09:34

Just dropped the youngest off at school (Reception - first day back). We were all very distanced at drop off, but the kids were let bunch up together the second they were through the gates & a nervous one quickly got a hug from the HT (who I love, and this reminded me why I love her). Went away feeling quite relieved.

I absolutely agree with this.

I'm hoping them getting back a bit in Wales ate end of the month means less talk of p/t school or blended learning in September as well.

SomewhereEast · 05/06/2020 09:36

Our school have been quite proactive about wanting to reopen though. My eldest is YR3 and I & his teacher were both saying we hoped they could get them back by July. It has a fair few kids from 'less advantaged' backgrounds so I'm guessing the inequalities of homeschooling are glaring apparent to the staff.

RubberDinghyRapids · 05/06/2020 09:37

@BarkandCheese It's a Deprivation of Liberties (DOLS) and is for those who don't have capacity to make decisions either way, rather than taking away the right.

SudokuBook · 05/06/2020 09:38

The dementors will be gutted if they heard Prof Pennington on question time last night, he’s sceptical about whether there will be a second wave.

Cattermole · 05/06/2020 09:38

I have a suspicion that the idea of encouraging all the children of keyworkers back into school, is that there are sufficient keyworkers amongst us that it then becomes the majority.
Without a word ever having been spoken about "lifting lockdown" and the safety of staff or teachers. It just... happens....

RubberDinghyRapids · 05/06/2020 09:39

Sorry, that sounded snippier than intended. Just mean to say it's not about removing rights, but actually a safeguarding mechanism to check that the care home etc is acting in the person's best interests. Pre-Covid a lot of DOLS stipulate making sure the person has access to the outside/family etc.

mightbealittlebitmad · 05/06/2020 09:40

I wonder how long it will be before people feel comfortable being around other people? If you spend weeks living in terror incase someone gets within 2m how do you get back to becoming ok with it??

People are treating their friends and family like lepers, freaking out over the slightest thing which is crazy to me.

Today is a whole week of school and it's lovely to see my 4 year old so happy at the prospect of seeing his friends. He's not even in a group with his friend friends, they split the class into half so he's with people he knows but not ones who he regularly spoke about. He's had no issues settling back in, the subtle keeping apart from other groups hasn't bothered him and neither has the sight of tape or the packed lunch. I might start giving him his own to take in because what they offer is limited. I'll ask him what he would prefer and go with that.

I have a friend who hasn't sent hers back yet because she's a bit worried. I've sent her a picture of my child beaming from ear to ear in school and told her how much he's enjoying it so she can see it's not something to be concerned about. Out of 90 kids in reception I think less than half are back which is a shame but hopefully they will start increasing over the coming weeks.

DominaShantotto · 05/06/2020 09:43

More and more kids drifting back in to join the keyworker bubbles at my kids' schools (much to the dismay of the "I am more keyworker than you" parents who've lost their lovely little quiet 5 kids to 3 teachers provision) - there've been new kids coming back every single day... DD2 of course now knows everything about the system and has been organising them all ruthlessly - bless her, the poor kids have been told where in the classroom they're sitting and who they're next to before they've got in the door! (DD2 is one of the most disorganised, scatterbrained creatures going because she's too busy organising everyone else's business!)

Replying to this:

I find it really sad that some people are rubbing their hands together hoping for a second wave so that they can say 'I told you so'. What sort of sad, horrible individuals they must be.

Let's hope he is right and the worst is behind us and we can start getting society back to normal - meeting up, schools, friends, socialising ....cannot wait

Yep.

That is the first step in the NI plan for education - redefine who is a key worker and add in a category of "essential" worker.

It's smart - get the kids back by just gradually increasing who gets to send their children under existing provision and avoid all this bolloxology from the teaching unions and the workshy teachers who support them in blocking children returning to school.

Of course, they haven't announced it yet and school ends at the end of June, so maybe it will turn out to be useless, but my hope is that more kids will be back before the end of the school year without having to bother the Dementors with an Official Return to dement about.
