Opinions on the name Rex?

Rex has always been a main contender for our baby boys name, however whenever we have let some friends and family know of our potential name choice we get MANY mixed reactions. What are your thoughts on the name?

My friend had a rabbit called Rex so to me it's a bunny name, similar to Thumper!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 01/06/2020 20:21

Dinosaur

Great for a pet.

We used it, goes well with our surname. Really suits him and dogs also have names like Oliver, Hugo etc. I couldn’t care less if people associate it with dogs, it suits our DS and it’s not overused, like Oliver, etc.

locked2020 · 01/06/2020 20:31

Dinosaur. Sorry.

KnottyAndPistey · 01/06/2020 20:34

I love it. It’s my 15 year old nephew’s name. Suited a little boy. Suits a gorgeous 6ft teen.

thenamesarealltaken · 01/06/2020 20:38

Nothing wrong with the name, I guess it's just what people associate the name with: dogs, dinosaurs, etc., maybe Rex and his friends wouldn't do that. My dog is Jess and my nephew is calling his daughter, Jess. Its difficult because we no longer name our furry friends different names to people. Around here the dogs I know of are Barney, Robbie, Max, Phoebe, etc.

Bertucci · 01/06/2020 20:42

I like it. But Stacey Solomon? Her use of it would ruin it for me.

BlusteryLake · 01/06/2020 20:43

In my mind, Rex is an old-fashioned crooner in a lounge suit leaning over a piano.

1066vegan · 01/06/2020 20:46

1st thought: dog
2nd thought: Rex Harrison

I suppose it could suit a boy who wants to talk to animals (very old film reference, before even my time).

ParadiseLaundry · 01/06/2020 20:48

I love the name is classic but still sounds fresh.

Witchend · 01/06/2020 20:48

Only think of a dinosaur.

Tanfastic · 01/06/2020 20:50

I love it but I do think a lot will think dog unfortunately.

I have similar with my ds's name which is Dexter. No bloody dog was called Dexter when I called him it 12 years ago. I know at least four now but no humans! 😡

IFancyANamechange · 01/06/2020 20:50

Love it.

Toilenstripes · 01/06/2020 20:52

I think his classmates would bark at him. I’m sorry about that because there’s really nothing wrong with the name.

BakewellGin1 · 01/06/2020 20:53

My Nanna had a dog called Rex so I can't get away with it

StillMedusa · 01/06/2020 20:53

I think the risk is either kids would 'T Rex' at him (do the silly little arms thing) or bark.
My first reaction would be to go 'here boy! Good doggy!' Sorry!

PurplePansy05 · 01/06/2020 20:54

It's a dog's name.

IKEA888 · 01/06/2020 20:55

Here Rex good boy.. here's a dog treat
For me it's also a noise name.
I don't like thrm.... Rex, Josh etc

Ihavenoidea · 01/06/2020 20:57

We had a teacher at school called Rex. He was known as Sexy Rexy, which was not meant kindly as he was one hell of a creep and thought he was god's gift, whereas in fact he was married, a good 4 stone overweight, balding, and in his 50s, which, on the whole, is unlikely to be an appealing prospect to teenage girls - it certainly wasn't in the 80s, anyway. It's left an enduring influence over my opinion of the name.

MyKingdomforaNameChange · 01/06/2020 21:07

One of my horses is called Rex (named that when I got him)

He's an arsehole Grin

Helloagain20 · 01/06/2020 21:11

Makes me think of dinosaurs and dogs.

Weepingwillows12 · 01/06/2020 21:15

Dinosaur. But also quite cool.

MyBoysHaveDogsNames · 01/06/2020 21:18

I like it. But then, look at my user name!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 01/06/2020 21:19

Animal's name. A dog, or the dinosaur from Toy Story. Sorry!
