It’s dd’s 16th birthday next month which makes me feel shockingly old. I was only 20 and at university when I had her and I look back and despite everything stacked against us it was such a happy time in my life. I’m at a loss of what to do to celebrate and I thought I’d put together a box of the things that were big when she was born that she might enjoy, so some CDs, DVDs, maybe some snacks or make up that we’re big at the time. Any other suggestions gratefully received as she won’t be getting a big party or prom like she was looking forward to and she’s had a tough time this year and I want her to have as good a birthday as she can.

Oh gosh, it feels so recent I’m not sure there are big differences.
This might help www.old-record-shop.co.uk/NumberOnes/2004.aspx

Straight hair, everyone wanted ironed hair and had GHD’s

I think celebrity perfumes became big business around this time but could be wrong.

Big brother popular as was I’m a celebrity, we were all becoming coffee mad (Starbucks)

Bootcut jeans, I know I was wearing them, everyone had gone off Chardonnay and switched to Pinot Grigio.

Some films here www.huffpost.com/entry/pop-culture-2005_n_7160650

Zisforstripyoss · 31/05/2020 18:51

Fashion:

skinny eyebrows
combats & stilettos
glitter spray
low slung bootcut jeans

Music:

Black Eyed Peas
Scissor Sisters
Coldplay
Pussycat Dolls

Food:

Cheese strings
Nik naks

I wore Paco Rabanne Ultraviolet and DKNY perfume for most of the early 2000s.

Thisdressneedspockets · 31/05/2020 19:00

Great idea. I had my first in 2004 and from then to about 2015 has been a blur.
I feel like I'm only just catching up with the bits of culture that I missed.

Catra · 31/05/2020 19:15

I was 26 back then and the following comes to mind -

Fashion:
Pointy toed heels (aka. shit flicking heels!)
Tiered boho skirts (in fact boho everything)
Big leather belts with lots of circles studs that were worn around the hips and served no purpose other than looking naff
Angel perfume (I find it sickly sweet now)

TV:
Peepshow
Lost
Shameless

Music:
Hey Ya - Outkast
Love Angel Music Baby - Gwen Stefani
The JCB song - Nizlopi
You're Beautiful - James Blunt (bleurgh)

2004 was the year I got my first iPod which I thought was just the best thing I'd ever owned.

I remember taking a disposable camera on nights out and getting so excited waiting to go and collect the printed copies from Boots.

Catra · 31/05/2020 19:16

Oh and Wagamama had just opened so I ate there all the time (still do!)

CallingOnAvengingAngels · 31/05/2020 19:25

I was listening to the killers on repeat, living in London Camden was still the cool place to go to, when we went out the music was the Libertines, Franz Ferdinand. Still wearing bootcuts but that suddenly changed sometime in 2005 and it was suddenly all about skinny jeans. Leggings cane back in at the same timeSmile
I turned 22 in 2005 and got an iPod shuffle, had only had CDs up until then. I either drunk vodka lemonades or corona, cider and gin hadn't had their renaissance yet! Shopped at stores like Paul frank, Fenchurch and Topshop. Yes to boho everything but it made me look like a peasant granny so I didn't really go for it!
I wore DNKY and Issy Miyake perfume and had super thin plucked eyebrows. 80s was still in for retro stuff, 90s stuff just not cool at all and avoided!

BreconBeBuggered · 31/05/2020 19:25

Franz Ferdinand
Keane
Joss Stone
The Zutons
Razorlight

Not sure what I was watching but probably Friends and South Park.

BertieBotts · 31/05/2020 19:46

I loved that time. I was actually 16 in 2004. You've got to do The Killers Hot Fuss. I think Friends had just finished. I was obsessed with The OC!

Yes ipods were the big thing and were amazing compared to skippy CD players or faffy minidiscs - remember those? And the white headphones being some kind of fashion thing, sort of like how Airpods are now.

I reckon I had a Nokia 3310 and played Snake :o and changed the covers depending on my mood.

Actually, The Sims 2 came out in 2004 and that remains my favourite game ever. But the main thing I was doing on the computer was changing my MSN status to various song lyrics, and writing in my Livejournal.

Harry Potter was huge. The films were just coming out and I think the big wait for book 4. Then books 5-7 - I used to spend hours on fan forums discussing theories and reading people's essays about their theories on the HP world. Some of which were proved right/wrong when the later books came out.

I was wearing baseball boots, I had this pair which were black with cherries on them (everything was black with cherries on...) and I thought I was amazing. Goth/emo was the in thing but we somehow thought we were all alternative and sticking it to the man :o I had loads of those choker necklaces which were actually so stretchy they went over your whole head. And bracelets up to my elbows almost, which I hardly ever took off.

AwkwardAsAllGetout · 31/05/2020 19:46

Thanks everyone, this is good stuff. Yes, I remember loving Hey Ya and Gwen Stefani. Also watching the first episode of Lost on my tiny tv with crappy reception, that and fight night on Big Brother. I might see if I can find some old copies of Heat. Definately remember the disc belts and bootcuts, I wore my first pair of uggs underneath them Blush. I wore DKNY too, and I think Juicy Tubes lip gloss. Also loved the OC which must have been around that time.

BertieBotts · 31/05/2020 19:59

Muse Absolution as well.
Death Cab for Cutie - Plans
Evanescence I was absolutely obsessed with - still love them.
I loved My Chemical Romance but everyone my age took the piss out of me. You were only supposed to be an MCR fan if you were born in the 90s Hmm :o

Yes we defo drank vodka, or malibu and coke I liked, none of this gin. We also drank lager and lime. And Sambuca although I might have been a bit older. I don't think red bull as a mixer had quite hit? I can't remember now.

I had the baggiest, longest trousers with stupid tassly bits on and kept getting in rages with people when they stepped on them and ripped the trousers Blush
And SUPER short skirts and tartan Shock and these massively dodgy stripy tights - black and red, purple, green or white!

Used to hang out at The Oasis in Birmingham and go to the Carling Academy for gigs.

I actually put together a playlist a few years ago which is all the Now That's What I Call Music CDs from my time at college which would have been Sept 2004 - June 2007. Most of this isn't music I particularly listened to but it would have been what was on the radio, in the clubs etc at the time, so good for nostalgia purposes: open.spotify.com/playlist/0U4wTFoqd0rL3oLtkhj12Q?si=WgqAVxVpR7mockaYoyrkLw

Or this one is September 2002 - August 2004:

If you watch the original Gilmore Girls episodes they were aired around this time and are an amazing kind of 00s time warp with the characters' fashion, technology etc.

BertieBotts · 31/05/2020 20:01

I drank loads of alcopops too - Bacardi breezer, WKD, Smirnoff ice. Confused Had one recently and it was rank - no idea what I saw in them!

BertieBotts · 31/05/2020 20:03

I didn't watch Gilmore Girls at the time BTW - but if you haven't seen it, it's set exactly at the time you want (The original series spans 2000-2007) and it's about a mum and her 16 year old daughter, the mum had her at 20 as well, so might be a nice thing to watch, it's quite cosy and feelgood.

17caterpillars1mouse · 31/05/2020 20:08

Lambrini
Anything with yellow smiley faces on

MoonBabysMagicalKalimba · 31/05/2020 20:09

I was a uni fresher 2004/5, great times!

Fashion - I second the boho gypsy skirt with a stringy, beaded belt. Overly straightened hair with a side fringe. Jeans, a naice top and a big chunky belt. Brightly coloured eyeshadow. Chunky beaded necklaces.

Music - the killers, scissor sisters, the pussycat dolls are what springs to mind.

Tv - the OC, shipwrecked on a Sunday morning when you were hungover, big brother.

Take me back!

fairyfingers · 31/05/2020 20:16

God - no ideas I'm afraid OP but I first got pregnant in 2004. Sadly lost the baby and it took me another 5 years before I got my kids but jeez, I could have a 16 year old!

I had a lot of beige and cream and brown in my living room and my wedding dress chat the year before was all about strapless Maggies if that helps.......

isabellerossignol · 31/05/2020 20:17

What was that perfume from around that time that came in a white cylinder, sort of rubbery on the outside? I have Paco Rabanne in my head but have been googling and can't see the one I'm thinking of. It wasn't cheap perfume, but not massively expensive either.

AwkwardAsAllGetout · 31/05/2020 20:20

Was it ghost?

OP posts:
Redkatagain · 31/05/2020 20:21

TV series of the year, was Space Cadets on channel 4. (The fake reality TV series which put 3 people into space, but actually didn't)
It was soooo funny😀

isabellerossignol · 31/05/2020 20:25

Was it ghost?

No, although at that time I was often drenched in Ghost Deep Night perfume, I loved it.

It has just come to me, it was Emporio Armani White. I'm a bit older, was in my late 20s by then, but it was very popular amongst all the young women in my office, including me. Smile

AwkwardAsAllGetout · 31/05/2020 20:44

I can’t believe how much Juicy Tubes are going for on eBay! I loved that lip gloss, though I was always getting my (overly straightened) hair stuck in it

OP posts:
NietzschePeachPearPlum · 31/05/2020 21:05

It was a bit of a blur. I was 35 and had just moved to a new area. I was very happy, as we were renting in a beautiful area by the sea. I soon found my ideal job and house... then was pregnant again!

I listened to: Green Day - American Idiot (a lot!), The killers, Muse, Queens of the Stone Age, White Stripes, Foo Fighters, Linkin Park...

Cant remember much TV from then. Or what I wore. Or how I had my hair!

ZiggeryZaggy · 31/05/2020 21:30

@isabellerossignol - I think it was one of the Calvin Klein ones, the bottle rings a bell..,

ZiggeryZaggy · 31/05/2020 21:33

I don’t think it was actually @isabellerossignol . That is going to drive me mad, because I can see the bottle on my mind now!

isabellerossignol · 31/05/2020 21:35

Hmm, maybe my memory has tricked me.

I think there were two or three different similar ones, in similar containers, but it was the white one that was much loved amongst me and my friends.

isabellerossignol · 31/05/2020 21:37

I've had another Google and [[https://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Giorgio-Armani/Emporio-Armani-White-For-Her-420.html
this]] is the one I was thinking of. Smile
