It’s dd’s 16th birthday next month which makes me feel shockingly old. I was only 20 and at university when I had her and I look back and despite everything stacked against us it was such a happy time in my life. I’m at a loss of what to do to celebrate and I thought I’d put together a box of the things that were big when she was born that she might enjoy, so some CDs, DVDs, maybe some snacks or make up that we’re big at the time. Any other suggestions gratefully received as she won’t be getting a big party or prom like she was looking forward to and she’s had a tough time this year and I want her to have as good a birthday as she can.

I remember everyone wearing the French Connection slogan t shirts ,watching the Osbournes and White Chicks . Listened to Charlotte Church , The Killers ,The Streets . Lacoste trainers and perfume were really big in my town and those ridiculous fake Louis Vuitton bags which were white with red and green letters on them . I was 18/19 back then at uni had all my bursary and student loan to myself was a great time .

Jesus I feel really old now - most of these things seem like 4 or 5 years ago not 16!

Yeah. This Grin Where the FUCK has the time gone?!

Wonderful nostalgia thread OP thank you for starting it. I was 19/ 20 in 2004/ 2005 and I'd go back in a heartbeat. Nodding along to loads of these music/ clothes/ tv memories.

Green Day/The Killers.
Watching Big Brother!
Wearing pretty much what I don now apart from in a size 8
😂

I was 24/25. My Ds was a toddler. I was so happy. I wish I could go back in time Sad

So glad someone mentioned archers aqua, I rewatched season 1 of No Angels (nurses in Manchester I think) and they are always drinking them.
So TV wise No Angels and desperate housewives I think came out around then.

Re useless belts I remember they didn't have to be belts at all but scarves (shimmery if poss) used as belts for that extra Boho look.

I’d love to get her an iPod but I’ve no idea if I can get an original one that it’ll still be functional, going on how fast my iPhones turn obsolete. I bought my first one with my student loan and dropped it down the toilet at the library within 2 days Shock. I sent it back to Apple admitting what had happened and they sent me a new one! Bet they wouldn’t do that now. My ebay basket is filled with cds but I think digital might be the way to go though not really the same, I just don’t want to clutter up her already small room.

Was it around this time everyone started going nuts for expensive designer handbags?

arinah · 01/06/2020 10:23

I was 13/14 then Shock The OC was definitely a big thing for me, as was my crush on Seth Cohen 😂
Music wise, I loved Keane, Death Cab, Greenday, Good Charlotte, the Killers, Keiserchiefs, Gorillaz, Arctic Monkeys (was that 2004/2005?)
I want to an all girls school and remember a very clear divide in my form between those that obsessed over Jane Norman bags, kitten heels and blue eyeshadow vs tatty jeans, striped tops/short sleeves with striped arm warmers, layered bracelets, vans/converse.
Hated school at the time but I would definitely love to go back to do it all over again Grin

AwkwardAsAllGetout · 01/06/2020 10:56

@TheClitterati yes! And sadly, I still remember the ones I lusted after, the Balenciaga Motorcycle bag and the Fendi spy. I was a religious reader of heat and it seemed every celeb had one of these. Dd is definately not the designer bag type, but I could still go for either one of those quite happily

We definitely did not have Nando's up here in 2004. I had never even heard of it until about 2010. We used to go to Pizza Hut Confused

I used to get DVDs from the library! Then when I was living on my own circa 2009/2010 I would walk all the way to Blockbuster's and get them from there.

YY to the divide. I was in the tatty jeans and stripy things group and we called the other girls "townies" for some reason :o

The old ipods still work as they didn't have as much changing software in them. You ought to still be able to connect one to iTunes and put bought music on it. Have a look on ebay.

Burberry became big and then became the preserve of chavs.

AbsentmindedWoman · 01/06/2020 18:11

@BertieBotts I LOVE those Spotify playlists! So many tunes I had forgotten - takes me right back!

TSSDNCOP · 01/06/2020 19:21

Was that not the summer of short tiered skirts/shorts and wellies?
