Can someone explain to me how podcasts work?

I keep reading that people are listening to true crime podcasts and they sound right up my street!

How do I access them? (I realise this sounds very stupid Blush). Can I do it via my phone? Do I have to pay for them? Also how do they work, is it like a mini story?

Also does anyone have any recommendations?

It's more like a radio show. People talking about a particular topic. You can listen on your phone, you might need to download an app depending on the setup of the particular podcast.

I can't recommend any crime ones. I like political ones.

Annonymiss123 · 31/05/2020 14:35

I listen to podcasts on the Spotify app. No charge.

Serial is a good one to start with! Season 1 is excellent.

And you can use any podcast app. iPhones have one already on, not sure about Android. And you can download free ones from App Store

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 31/05/2020 14:40

I use a great free app on my Android phone called Podbean

LizzieMacQueen · 31/05/2020 14:42

They are good because they keep track of where you are and you can have them automatically start the next episode when the current one ends.

I too would recommend Serial and Missing Maura Murray. Both are American.

Sparklingbrook · 31/05/2020 14:43

I use Entale

LizzieMacQueen · 31/05/2020 14:44

Usually you'd download (when in wifi) before listening therefore not eating into your data allowance.

Vintagehearts · 31/05/2020 14:46

You can download an app on your phone and they are free or spotify have podcasts too.

They have various topics from health, relationships to religion and crime.

Dirty John is a good podcast too.

midsomermurderess · 31/05/2020 14:55

Generation Why is a good one, primarily American but they sometimes go further afield. They Walk Among Us is a British one. I like Casefile too and Australian True Crime. If you subscribe, the most recent ones are downloaded and you can listen to them as and when you choose, unlike radio, not fixed to a time on the schedule.

HouseOfSticks · 31/05/2020 15:01

RedHanded
S’laughter
My favorite murder (American Spelling)
Serial
Last Podcast on the left (This can be a bit close to the edge. Especially the early episodes so not for the faint hearted)
Sword and Scale
They Walk Among Us
All Killa no Filla
White Wine True Crime
There’s literally hundreds so you should find one that suits you.

I love podcasts.

What phone do you have? I have an iPhone and use the built in Podcast app (the purple icon that looks like an i with circles around it. This one (pic attached). You go into the search area (magnifying glass) and you can browse by genre or if you know what you’re looking for you can search by name. I like true crime too. I enjoyed these,

Serial
S Town
Dirty John
Real Crime Profile - an ex FBI guy, an ex Scotland Yard woman and a TV CSI woman discuss high profile criminal cases. Sweary but loads of episodes and interesting.
RHLSTP - Richard Herring chats with celebs (mostly comedians) for about an hour. Again hundreds of episodes to choose from. Some are better than others, some are very funny indeed. Easy to listen to.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 31/05/2020 15:09

All Killa No Filla, I quite like it but I do find they go off course a bit too much. Don’t listen if you don’t want to hear meandering and wittering about off topic stuff. I’d say 40% of every episode is off topic content.

SwayingInTime · 31/05/2020 15:12

Serial
Cold
Bear Brook

JustAnotherPoster00 · 31/05/2020 15:13

I use an app called Podcast Addict on android

YurtleTheTurtle · 31/05/2020 15:23

I live AllKillaNoFilla, it's brilliant!

JonHammIsMyJamm · 31/05/2020 15:24

I didn’t attach a pic of the apple icon. Stupid. This is it

I use Castbox for podcasts, but I miss having an iPhone and using Apple podcasts.. that was definitely my favourite app.

I enjoyed The Clearing. I never see it recommended on here- it's the daughter of a serial killer who, based on childhood memories, thinks her Dad committed other murders which he didn't get charged for.

BooFuckingHoo2 · 31/05/2020 15:42

Thanks all :)

I love true crime podcast and always have a few downloaded to take on dog walks. I use spotify and castbox, and if listening at home on my iPad the Apple one which is there anyway.

My favourite true crime podcasts are Casefile and They Walk Among us.

endoflevelbaddy · 31/05/2020 16:00

I listen to them on my iPhone podcast app or Spotify

Can also recommend All killa no filla, the serial killer podcast, real crime profile, last podcast on the left and colour me dead if you don't mind the swearing. Lots of Wondery ones - really liked Dirty John & Dr Death

BorisJohnsonMicrowavesHisBacon · 31/05/2020 16:06

I love a good podcast! If you're using an iPhone it's the icon that the poster above said!
I love putting my headphones in and cleaning the house and getting lost in another world.
My favourite so far has been my dad wrote a porno, it's absolutely hilarious!
Podcasts are what have kept me sane during the madness in the past few months!

QuestionableMouse · 31/05/2020 16:12

Podbean is great and free to download on android.

thefuriousfuggler · 31/05/2020 16:18

I'd recommend Paradise (Radio5 podcast) as a great listen if you are into true crime.

Also Manhunt: Finding Kevin Parle (also Radio5)

Lockdownlooks · 31/05/2020 16:25

I don’t have any tips for crime podcasts, some general ones
I use overcast. For things like politics can just listen to one episode or subscribe so available episodes will be downloaded when you open the app. (You can make it just go forward.)

Apps will give the choice to delete episodes once played or keep them. My iPhone has options in settings to only download if using WiFi or WiFi and mobile data (3G/4g)

You can search for podcasts in the app you are using. There are lots of websites with “best” podcasts for different subjects - look out how old the list is.

Almost all podcasts I come across are free but there are some you can subscribe for no adds or extra content.
