Can someone explain to me how podcasts work?

I keep reading that people are listening to true crime podcasts and they sound right up my street!

How do I access them? (I realise this sounds very stupid ). Can I do it via my phone? Do I have to pay for them? Also how do they work, is it like a mini story?

Also does anyone have any recommendations?

Another good one is the Teachers pet about an Australian mum who disappears with the husband, a PE teacher believed to be responsible.

I don't think anyone has mentioned in the dark yet which I highly recommend.
