What days do you consider to be the weekend?

TwerkForTeachers · 31/05/2020 09:32

Saturday and Sunday. They just happen one each end of the week.

gamerchick · 31/05/2020 09:34

I don't, but husband does. Its made for 'robust' conversations in the past.

gamerchick · 31/05/2020 09:36

So Sunday is both the end and start of the week?

cookiemonster5 · 31/05/2020 09:36

Sunday is the last day of the week not the first. It cannot be the weekend and the first day of the week at the same time. Monday always has been the first day of the week and if you believe in the bible even god says Sunday is the weekend because "on the 7th day he rested".

ACNH · 31/05/2020 09:37

So Saturday the 30th of May is a different weekend to Sunday the 31st of may? 🤯

So if someone said ‘next weekend’ that could be Saturday the 8th of June?

Candyfloss99 · 31/05/2020 09:39

Monday is the first day of the week

ACNH · 31/05/2020 09:42

@cookiemonster5 @Candyfloss99 not everyone considers Monday is the 1st day of the week.

I don't I've ever met anyone who thinks that Sunday is the first day of the week, surely that would make a mockery of Saturday and Sunday being the weekend?

On certain jobs I've had Sunday has been classed as first day of week for rostering purposes and I never understood that either.

I love my weekends and I won't have them messed about Grin

TeenPlusTwenties · 31/05/2020 09:44

Monday always has been the first day of the week and if you believe in the bible even god says Sunday is the weekend because "on the 7th day he rested".

But Jews have Saturday as their holy day, so presumably that was the 7th day, and thus Sunday would be the start of the week?

Just watched some reruns of Downton Abbey. Someone was visiting 'at the weekend' and Professor McGonagall was very snooty about the phrase (as if it were new). When did the 'weekend' come into being?

ParkheadParadise · 31/05/2020 09:44

Monday is the first day of the week in our house.

Sparklingbrook · 31/05/2020 09:45

I class Sunday as the first day of the week. Same at work.
Bit the weekend to me is still Saturday and Sunday.

Youngatheart00 · 31/05/2020 09:46

Monday is DEFINITELY the first day of the week.

It’s why Saturday and Sunday are known as the Week - End. The end of the week.

I guess it could feel different if you have different work patterns than the Monday - Friday.

CherryPavlova · 31/05/2020 09:48

Monday is the start of the week.
Sunday is a day of rest and celebration after a week’s work.
It’s in the name - weekend.

Cheeeeislifenow · 31/05/2020 09:48

Sunday can't be the weekend because "end" and be the beginning of the week.

ElectricTonight · 31/05/2020 09:49

Monday is the first day of the week, Saturday and Sunday is the weekend.

ElectricTonight · 31/05/2020 09:50

Bank holidays Monday we class as a long weekend.

MsMeNz · 31/05/2020 09:50

Monday is my start. Weekend has its name for a reason.

HappyDinosaur · 31/05/2020 09:51

Monday is the first day of the week for me.

Sparklingbrook · 31/05/2020 09:51

Sunday is only ‘a day of rest’ for some. Confused If you work Sundays that’s clearly cobblers.

A lot of this hinges on what you do for a living.

Quickerthanavicar · 31/05/2020 09:51

Sunday is the start of the week.
It's on most calendars as the first day of the week.

anonacatchat · 31/05/2020 09:51

Israelis see Sunday as the first day of the week - Sunday is a work day there .

heartsonacake · 31/05/2020 09:52

I don’t understand how anyone could possibly think Sunday was the first day of the week. It’s literally at the weekEND.

Monday is the first day of the week.

LittleMissRedHat · 31/05/2020 09:52

I live in the Middle East, "weekend" is Friday / Saturday so Sunday is the first day of the week.

ACNH · 31/05/2020 09:52

I suppose Sunday is the front end of the week - thinking about it further I suppose this weekend is weekend 20 of the year (not sure if it is) which is the end of week 19 and the start of week 20, so next weekend would still be 6th/7th of June, the 21st weekend of the year.

Teen I thought the point there is was that McGonagall didn’t know what a weekend was as they didn’t work whereas Matthew had an actual job/was the ‘common’ middle class cousin. But I think weekends ie two days off are a late 19th/early 20th century invention alright.
