Anyone else reconsidering sending kids back?

In light of scientists saying it's too early to ease lockdown, is anyone else reconsidering sending kids back? I've repaid the home learning discount applied by the school this term to send DC back, so was serious, but am now reconsidering. Anyone else? I'll probably still send but am wavering again now. AAGH, it's v tricky.

It depends where you got them from in the first place. If they're naice ones from John Lewis then you'll probably get a full refund but if they're from Primark then you might only get store credit.

MamaNewtNewt · 30/05/2020 23:45

No you aren't the only one. I don't think I'm going to send my daughter back to school next week. We'll know it's safe when the government send their kids back to their private schools.

I'm starting to reconsider as the school have made it very clear that they don't want to teach and I dont want to send my child somewhere where he is unwelcome. If the scientists say coronavirus is over they have put themselves out of a job so I'm not taking them and their bloody predictions too seriously either.

It's a very personal decision, do what is right for you xxx

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 30/05/2020 23:52

I've arranged for mine to start 2 weeks late, so his place is there but I'll see what the infection rates look like by then and if the conditions set out by the teaching unions are met.

NellMangel · 30/05/2020 23:54

I was never, and am still not, sending mine back. I worry we are sleepwalking into a terrible situation.

NellMangel · 30/05/2020 23:56

@Playdonut I think scientists will have plenty to do after coronavirus Hmm

Mintjulia · 31/05/2020 00:18

Ds wants to go back and I’m happy for him to go ahead, although being year 7 I’m not sure when that will be.

Our school has done a good job, lots of careful planning and a video to show how it will work, dropoffs, pickups, lunch, toilet breaks etc.

toinfinityandlockdown · 31/05/2020 00:22

No. The risk to children is unbelievably low assuming they don’t have serious health concerns and we don’t have anyone shielding in our family. The scientists are concerned with the impact nationally of all the lockdown measures easing but I’m not in charge of that, just ensuring what’s best for my children within the rules.

SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel · 31/05/2020 00:22

Pretty sure the government scientists won't be out of a job the second Corona is over. They did work for the government before all this too Hmm

Fuck no! It hurt like hell getting them out when they weighed 7-8lbs. Not sure how they'd fit again now that they are bigger than me Grin
Playdonut · 31/05/2020 00:25

Do those who feel that the scientists will still have a job after this also want the lockdown to continue? The lack of peer reviewed studies is making me question all research tbh. All of it seems to be money driven. I didn't think the scientists would go on universal credit, but surely without a current pandemic there is less work for them all?

SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel · 31/05/2020 00:39

Patrick Vallence has been in his job since the start of 2018, they didnt just employ him in February Confused

boydoggies · 31/05/2020 00:56

I'm sending my 3 back! They're all pleased to have the chance to get out the house and my home schooling. Can't wait ✋

Myothercarisalsoshit · 31/05/2020 01:04

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 31/05/2020 01:09

I'm sending mine. I have a lot of faith in the school, and they've been excellent in explaining how things are going to work.

The actual risk is miniscule to my child, I do understand that the risk to staff is higher, but they have secure protocols and good risk assessment and I'm happy to send mine.

I'll reassess weekly, see what happens.

Tbh, even if they go for a couple of weeks, it'll be beneficial.

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 31/05/2020 01:11

"The lack of peer reviewed studies is making me question all research tbh."

Give it a bit of time. Even the fastest studies will take a few more months.

Sorry, but again. Do you have the faintest idea why you're talking about?
Penny31 · 31/05/2020 07:15

There’s still quite a few other diseases for them to be looking at, I wouldn’t worry about their employment status

LadyLooLaa · 31/05/2020 07:35

I am going back to work from Monday so had originally accepted a place for DD (reception) to go back. However any faith I had in government decision making has gone in the last week or so. Also my nearest hospital has closed due to a spike in infections. So I’ve contacted the school to say that she’s not going in. It is not so much that I’m worried about her health (although I am, obviously) but I’m concerned about the wider implications for staff and the community.
My DH has significant MH issues so we might have to reassess if he can’t cope with the children on his own.

Pegase · 31/05/2020 07:36

Lol @Playdonut they haven't been given new jobs due to the pandemic- world-class scientists don't exactly need to find work to do to keep busy! They will probably be glad to get back to their normal day to day tasks which are all on hold rather than this 24/7 madness they are embroiled in!

Confused I didn't see the job adverts go out looking for corona scientists in March. I think they might rustle up something else to science after they've scienced the shit out of this virus.
MimiSunshine · 31/05/2020 08:00

Sorry but the questioning of the motivations of scientists and wondering what they’ll do when this is over is THE funniest thing I’ve read in a long time.

I mean, this isn’t actually ever going to be over, you do realise that? I doubt in my lifetime I’ll ever see a headline which says “Covid19 eradicated”.
Hopefully we’ll get a vaccine and either way we’ll learn to live with it but scientist will always have a job to do when it comes to this virus (not to mention everything else they normally do).

twinnywinny14 · 31/05/2020 08:05

The issue for me is that this approach hasn’t actually been modelled or worked out what the impact might be. SAGE modelled several different approaches and the government made up this one for themselves and haven’t had it modelled. Not sure how comfortable I am with that fact, seeing as we keep being told there is so much no one understands about the virus as it’s so new
