Why wont my legs tan?!?!

JJJJJ00000 · 29/05/2020 19:37

It's so frustrating!
Everywhere else on my body tans, even my feet. But my legs, below the knee just stay milk bottle white!
Anyone know why? Or can anyone recommend anything to use to help tan naturally?

Mine don't tan well. They do go brown all over big nowhere near the speed of the rest of me.

I've never worked out why!

TooGood2BeTrue · 29/05/2020 19:50

I reckon they will tan if you walk around doing handstand all day 😉. It's the angle at which the sun rays hit them, I'd say.

Lunaballoon · 29/05/2020 19:51

Same here. If you’re not genetically blessed with easily tanning skin, fake tan does a pretty good job.

I officially gave up trying to tan last year. I’m 44. I actually don’t like sitting in the sun and hate being hot. But. Like an idiot I tried and tried. I just go red and then back to white.

Now I have accepted that I no longer have to subject people to the view of my in shorts. No more shorts for me. Just loose trouser. Just read that back. And now I feel like my Nan with my loose trousers Confused

Buddyelf · 29/05/2020 19:53

Oh my god I’m the same! I have brown feet, brownish thighs and milk bottle shins. My dc keep saying ‘mummy why are your feet so brown’ so annoying!!

justtb · 29/05/2020 19:56

My mum is a tanning expert and always says that legs take longer to tan.. the fleshy parts go brown quicker though, so tan is never really even. I hear fake tan is amazing, sadly not for me though

Polly99 · 29/05/2020 19:58

For me it was to do with shaving. It strips off a layer of skin. So then I went for laser and now I only shave occasionally and it is a lot better (although still not like other parts of my body, which just tan very easily).

UpToonGirl · 29/05/2020 19:59

I had this issue until I got a Lumea and didn't have to shave my legs. Went on holiday and came back with lovely tanned legs!

JJJJJ00000 · 29/05/2020 20:00

I've tried all sorts. Even laying and actually sunbathing. Top half perfect, bottom half nothing. I have thought of using fake tan just to even myself out but read that it transfers onto bedsheets and can look quite patchy.

I read something about baby oil too? Have you or would you use it? I cant imagine it being comfortable being oily all day.

Try some Vita Liberata gradual tan ... best I've ever tried .

What is a lumea? That's what it could be for me, constantly having to shave my legs!

No idea what it is with legs. Mine don't tan particularly either.
Also annoying is that my face can get a bit tanned, but it fades after about 2 days.
It must have something to do with the angle or the reflectiveness of the skin or something.

UpToonGirl · 29/05/2020 20:08

Its an at home laser hair removal device. Expensive but it works, I never thought I could tan my legs even though I could get a decent tan everywhere else until last year. Even my face would tan more than my legs despite using factor 50 and always wearing a hat!

JJJJJ00000 · 29/05/2020 20:13

Thank-you @UpToonGirl ill have a look at that.

My legs never really went brown until two years ago when it was really hot in May/June and I sat on a steamer chair with my legs out in front of me. I think that was the trick. Now they tan as quickly as the rest of me (I have olive skin) but I make sure that when I start off that I am lying down with my legs flat as well. I also use Dove/Tesco self-tan after a shower - it moisturises and slowly enhances the colour but doesn't stain like fake tan does. If you shave, make sure you go it before sunbathing Grin

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 29/05/2020 20:21

you have to scrubbity scrubscrub those shins and moisturise like a demon

shin skin is effectively greaseproof paper...dry and crispy, so it won't take any colour until you combat that.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 29/05/2020 20:21

I used to be a tanaholic, my shins never went as brown as the rear of me, I put it down to surface area being less, they would still tan but only to a golden colour, not like the rest of me which resembled David Dickinson, I just used to put some rimmel sunshimmer on to even it up. I don’t sunbathe at all now, getting a tan is an effort and I can’t be bothered at all anymore, I just use st tropez instead.

amusedbush · 29/05/2020 20:56

My legs have never tanned properly even though my face/chest/arms can get really brown - until we went to Turkey last year! My legs were golden brown for the first time in my life and when we came home I couldn’t stop looking at them Grin

I think it’s probably because it was the first time I’d really just lay around in the sun for a week. We usually do city breaks so even if it’s sunny, I’m walking around and not getting the sun on the at the right angle.

eeehbyegum · 29/05/2020 20:57

You have to lay completely flat in the sun! No knees up, no getting up etc. That’s the only way. It’s like a PP said it’s the angle of the sun on your legs.....But if they haven’t been tanned before they take ages. You go brown easily where you’ve tanned before.

AriettyHomily · 29/05/2020 21:01

You need to walk up and down the beach or play volleyball or do something outdoorsy just lying in the sun never gets my legs evenly brown.

SpillTheTeaa · 29/05/2020 21:01

Mine ever only really tan when abroad!

Llareggub · 29/05/2020 21:05

None of me tans at all. I thought my feet had tanned slightly once but it turned out to be dirt.

RaN88 · 29/05/2020 22:16

Haha I could have written that but never considered saying it until I see your post! When I go on holiday I get really brown feet and knees and white shins!! I never ever have my legs out, like ever. So when I'm on holiday sometimes it's where I've been so wrapped up all my life?! Interesting r.e the comment on the thinner less fleshy skin. Mind you the backs don't tan either lol.

wowfudge · 29/05/2020 22:58

Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs is fantastic - easy to get an even result and it stays put. I find my legs take several applications of self tanner to look anywhere near as brown as my arms. In the past when I sunbathed they would take longer to tan.
