My boyfriend made a big song and dance about having bought me an amazing present one year, I was so excited until I opened it and it was a spice rack Grin

Tell me your worst!

A pink knitted jumper with a rabbit on it. The sort of thing you'd get in Jojo Maman Bebe.

I was 19, in my Fresher year at Uni, and wearing Doc Martins, tie-dye shirts and tons of kohl eye-liner at the time....

A can of WD40 from a boyfriend Hmm

Seriously.

Was not a lube joke.

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius thanks for the idea of the Cornish toilet book as a stocking filler for Christmas. Parents and I live in Cornwall and are always getting caught short Blush

Ex boyfriend gave me dvds in a grubby plastic bag.

He'd bought them when we were together in a supermarket so they were what I wanted and were in the 3 for 2 offer. He then left them in the boot of his car for a month, arrived at my family party late and thrust them at me as if I should be delighted by his presence.

I wouldn't even have minded just having the dvds if he'd wrapped them and maybe added some chocolate I liked, it was the complete lack of care and effort that did it, exactly what was wrong with our relationship. That was what made me end it after 5 years. That and the cross dressing, pot smoking and complete lack of respect. Plus his mom thought I should clean his flat even though I didn't live there.

Sorry that was long, seems I still have some strong feelings about it 20 years later!

Not so much disappointing, as a complete joke.
A wedding present from the woman dh’s GF married after his first wife died - she swiftly whisked him off to New Zealand. A woman who my DF would have called an ‘old flannel drawers’ IFKWIM.
Present was a ‘tea shower’ - like a vast thin square scarf, that apparently you put over your tea things to keep the flies off! It was a hideous polyester monstrosity, covered with a garish map of NZ and pictures of kiwis etc.

Did give us a good laugh though. Writing the thank you letter was a good exercise in tactfully worded lies!

For my 21st my parents got me a half bottle of wine and a tin of meatballs. ( I'm a veggie ) they didn't even wrap them .

When I was about 12 I was in need of a new bike, all bikes I'd had previously were second had, fine but now I needed something bigger.
I was so excited for Christmas.
My mum brought me what was basically an old ladies bike that folded in half. Very very old ladies bike.
She basically told me it was so she could use it too.

@wehaveafloater
Think that might top the thread
What were your parents thinking?

maddy68 · 03/06/2020 19:55

A pair of pillows for Christmas

Boogiewoogietoo · 03/06/2020 20:17

For my birthday ex BF handed me a small velvet box, I thought it was a ring and was so overwhelmed and shaking when I opened it.

Inside, nestling on a satin cushion was...a key to his flat. Not to move in, just so I had my own if I happened to be staying over.

That was my birthday present.

amillionnamechangeslater000 · 03/06/2020 20:20

I would love a spice rack. Mine was about 12 year ago - dh (who was then dp) bought me a mug for Valentine’s Day - this was when we were newly enough together and I was young enough to care about such things.

I was really really disappointed and told him so Blush

The mug is still used - and every now and then he points out that his “crap present” has probably lasted longer than anything else we have in our kitchen

The most bizarre present I received was from my ex mil- for Xmas she gave me a biography of the actor Sean Astin (from the Goonies, LOTR) I have absolutely no idea why. I had been with her son for 8 years by that point and she still clearly didn't like me!
