My boyfriend made a big song and dance about having bought me an amazing present one year, I was so excited until I opened it and it was a spice rack Grin

Tell me your worst!

A clutch cable for a car.

I mean, I did need one. It was the 'I've got you a present' text before I got home, and the resulting excitement that did it for me Wink

The first Christmas with my then boyfriend (now DH) I had the biggest present under the tree, being totally childish at heart I was very excited about this. It was a vacuum cleaner. True I had said I needed a new one, but still.... We laugh about it now and he now is actually very good at buying thoughtful presents

GreenWillowTree · 25/05/2020 19:23

My mum once bought me a set of bathroom scales for Christmas. I am ashamed to say I cried.

Hesperatum · 25/05/2020 19:35

A skillet

iklboo · 25/05/2020 19:36

Oh - DVDs. A colleague once bought me the Home Alone box set because I said I liked horror movies and she thought these were much more suitable viewing for me. I was 33 at the time.

Christmas pres from DH; a humane rabbit trap.

His excuse

"But I thought you wanted one".

H1978 · 25/05/2020 19:39

My dh once bought me a present of a chip slicer so “I could make him homemade chips” Hmm

My grandmother outdid herself one birthday in particular, when she got me a call bell like the ones you ping at a hotel reception desk. And a four-foot saxophone made out of wire.

I was 7.

I gave a friend a room in my (came with work) flat. All bills etc, no rent paid. She paid half the telephone bill. Her boyfriend stayed most weekends and her sisters were there a lot.

She kept promising a wonderful gift to say thanks. Her family had a house in France which she talked about a lot so I sort of got it into my head I would be invited there to say thanks.

She built up the gift and kept saying how nice it was.

Admittedly, they were lovely. But the gift was a pair of mugs. Only one remains and my husband calls it my Mug mug.

WindsorBlues · 25/05/2020 19:56

MIL brought me back a normal salad tomato from her holiday in Portugal, it was all wrinkly and about to go off. Confused

She did it to be a bitch but I just said thanks very much its just what I need and tried to avoid DH eye so we wouldnt both burst into a fit of giggles Grin

Other gems she's gifted me is a multipack of 5 knickers with two missing, season 2 of a dvd (I hadn't seen season 1) with the wrap already off it - she borrowed it straight away and I haven't seen it since.

Shes very particular about receiving gifts you can only get her off a preapproved list and its always something expensive.

I got a macaron gift box that I thought was full of delicious macarons. It was a tea cup with pictures of macarons on it. I was with my in-laws (who gave it to me) when I opened it and dh says I was so visibly disappointed!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 25/05/2020 20:01

I was once given an absolutely beautiful blue-glass jar in the shape of an apple.

Full of apple sauce blanketed in luxuriant grey-green mould...

I never told the giver.

MissKittyFantastico84 · 25/05/2020 20:01

Worked in a glam advertising agency and secret santa came around... money wasn't short amongst the bigwigs, so people were opening Eve Lom gift sets and Nars palettes and champagne...

I got a Build Your Own Medieval Trebuchet kit (a catapult, for the uninformed) and SOME CLAY TO SCULPT SOME MINI ROCKS.

Needless to say, I was not happy, and to my shame, really didn't hide the fact. But I mean... COME ON!

gamerchick · 25/05/2020 20:02

A beautifully wrapped roll of black bags.

Nothing will ever top it Grin

Sudename · 25/05/2020 20:05

A tray cloth from my mil when I was dating my dh.
As I have a February birthday I often get regifted xmas leftovers like tins of sweets and biscuits

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 25/05/2020 20:07

Mum bought me a push present which I really hadnt expected. I opened the wrapping to a stuart crystal box. Crikey I thought. Opened the box. Body shop toiletries. Nowt wrong with body shop but when your expectations have gone from zero to stuart crystal its a bit of a come down!

Mum is generally a bit rubbish at presents. She buys her 3 dds an identical present each year. One year it was james bond stockings in xl. Another year it was soap from where my sister had gone on an a level trip 20yrs previously.

Dad also had his bonkers moments. He bought me a how to microsoft excel book and one on napkin folding.

Mangofandangoo · 25/05/2020 20:09

I got a Tom Tom Satnav with all the bells and whistles - shame I didn't have a driving licence really Hmm

Nishky · 25/05/2020 20:12

I had recently moved into my first house and needed lots of stuff for the house and had very little money
My birthday was a month later and there was a long package from my parents. I was convinced it was going to be kitchen utensils.

It was a set of toiletries- perfume, shower gel, soap, body lotion and talc- it was they stuff my mum used, I had told her it was nice - I was being polite. It was not my taste at all.

I am ashamed to say I didn’t control my expression of dismay and my mum ran out of the room to compose herself as she was so upset

Not my finest hour.

QuestionableMouse · 25/05/2020 20:13

Some of these gifts sound good to me.

I was recently given a set of silicone spatulas for my birthday. Maybe rubbish to some but I asked for them and bloody love them. 😂😂😂

ParkheadParadise · 25/05/2020 20:17

For my 18th birthday
I had recently moved into a house with dd1.
My Sil bought me a ironing board. She even wrapped it up. At the time I didn't have a iron.

SpeedofaSloth · 25/05/2020 20:19

A Mrs Hinch activity book.

WotnoPasta · 25/05/2020 20:19

My MIL bought me size 6 pyjamas ‘to slim into’. I was a 10, I was never going to be that small and it was a sly dig.
My SIL thinks she’s amazing at presents. Everything she buys is awful. She got tee-total MIL a set of liqueurs one year. She’s bought us the same boots Christmas set 3 times.

forsucksfake · 25/05/2020 20:20

A huge massage machine as a going-away present for an international move, a few nights before departure. Kind gesture not well thought out at all.

Someone1987 · 25/05/2020 20:21

Someone at work regifted me something I had got them the previous Christmas!!!

Lollypop4 · 25/05/2020 20:24
