I was showering my 9 days old daughter and as I was showering her back , my arm slightly touched the water and she swallowed some..she panicked started kicking and went red...I rubbed her back on my chest "burp position" she started breathing again and crying.. now she is sleeping calmly and warm.. should I worry ? Will she be OK? Will something happen later? She is 9 days old ...

No you don’t need to worry, she’ll be fine,

BasinHaircut · 23/05/2020 19:34

I don’t really understand what has happened here, are you saying that some water splashed in her mouth?

ExclamationPerfume · 23/05/2020 19:36

She will be fine. It's much easier to bath them in the kitchen sink at that age.

She's fine.

InterestingIris · 23/05/2020 19:37

Her face went under the water?

PotteringAlong · 23/05/2020 19:38

She’s fine. And agree with the kitchen sink!

Elie123 · 23/05/2020 19:38

You know when you hold the newborn baby on your forearm ? Well my forearm went low a bit and my new born's chin slightly touched the water as she moved she swallowed a bit of water.. and then the rest of the story what I posted... man I feel so bad

This happened to me so many times!! My little one would panic if water went in his mouth or up his nose a little but he is fine just keep an eye on her.

Kaykay066 · 23/05/2020 19:40

Surely showering is slippy and most likely she’s going to swallow some water but it’s water same as her milk has in I doubt it did harm and if she’d stopped breathing she would have gone floppy and changed colour so it sounds as if she got a wee fright/choked on a bit until she had a cuddle and a cough.

I used to bath mine in the baby bath then big bath with water just past ears so they could splash about once I’d washed hair, then I have 2 hands free to play and wash and pluck out once done obs if you don’t have a bath they do fit in a big sink or baby bath for a while. Hope baby is ok now but I wouldn’t worry if she’s feeding and content since

AnyFucker · 23/05/2020 19:42

You shower a new born baby ? I cannot picture that.

Get a baby bath, fgs

TinySleepThief · 23/05/2020 19:44

I just cannot fathom showering whilst holding a newborn surely thats the most likely way for a newborn to get water in their mouth not to mention the risk of slipping and dropping her.

DemolitionBarbie · 23/05/2020 19:48

She'll be fine. But as pp said better not to shower a tiny one. You could just flannel her down every few days. Give her a daily wipe of face and bum and that'd be fine.

ItsSpittingEverybodyIn · 23/05/2020 19:48

She'll be fine but definitely just use a baby bath.

Bringonspring · 23/05/2020 19:48

Yes baby bath in future

Thisismytimetoshine · 23/05/2020 19:49

Showering a newborn?? Why would you do that?

ElectricTonight · 23/05/2020 19:51

Just wash her with a warm wet cloth for now and then bath her in the sink in a few weeks time.

Elie123 · 23/05/2020 19:54

Thank you all so much.. yes I am using a baby bath, but from now on till she grows a little I will do wiping with warm water face and bum ... thank you all for your help..
For some I just want to say that at the hospital they showed us and told us to bath her.. it's my first child...
Thank you all

I used the kitchen sink for both of mine.
If you didn’t want to use chemicals to clean it you could use bicarbonate of soda with a little water to make a paste. Then just rinse thoroughly. Much easier on your back too

slipperywhensparticus · 23/05/2020 19:56

My son used to love a shower when he was a baby 🤷‍♀️

AdaColeman · 23/05/2020 19:58

Don’t worry, she just got a surprise tasting the water, she won’t come to any harm.
At that age, it’s much easier to bathe them in a baby bath, plastic bowl etc, as they can be slippery and wriggley when wet, so you are more in control and able to keep them safe. Wink
Panic over!

My daughter always showered with my husband when she was tiny, and she started swimming lessons at 3 weeks so don’t worry! 🙂

DarkUnicorn · 23/05/2020 20:28

She’ll be fine, don’t worry. We had a cheap foam bath support for the baby bath and it was one of our best baby buys, makes bathing so much easier.

Elie123 · 23/05/2020 21:35

3 hours passed after bathing my daughter, now she is crying out really loud as if in pain,we tried breast feeding, we changed 3 poops and she is still crying loud.. could it be from water she swallowed earlier she has gases or stomach pain from maybe a little soap in water ? She calms for 20 to 30 minutes then she cries out really loud... what do I do?

Bath baby don't shower her. Do you have a baby bath?
