I was showering my 9 days old daughter and as I was showering her back , my arm slightly touched the water and she swallowed some..she panicked started kicking and went red...I rubbed her back on my chest "burp position" she started breathing again and crying.. now she is sleeping calmly and warm.. should I worry ? Will she be OK? Will something happen later? She is 9 days old ...

I'm confused did you shower her or bath her if you have a bath?

borntohula · 23/05/2020 21:44

You don't even need a baby bath, just use a regular bath ffs. 🙄

OP babies cry for a number of reasons, it's very unlikely to be anything to do with swallowing a bit of water, she could be gassy or have stomach pains, it's reeeally common in tiny babies. She'll be fine.

3 hours passed after bathing my daughter, now she is crying out really loud as if in pain,we tried breast feeding, we changed 3 poops and she is still crying loud.. could it be from water she swallowed earlier she has gases or stomach pain from maybe a little soap in water ? She calms for 20 to 30 minutes then she cries out really loud... what do I do?

No one can medically confirm the reason your daughter is crying. Why don't you call 111 for some reassurance and to speak with a professional. Try and stay calm as I found with my DD when I'm stressed it made her upset. I know this is much easier said than done.

I'm sure she'll be fine but quite honestly the shower isn't safe for a newborn, it's slippery, you only have one hand to hold her with and the other for the shower hose, it's a recipe for disaster as you just found out. I have never heard of a newborn being showered!!
As the others said the kitchen sink is idea, two hands and nowhere to go, a great big bath or an adult shower is much too scarey for a little one.
The kitchen sink is great for bathing cats too - the right height and they can't leg it.

I know this isn’t a helpful comment for the immediate situation but for future baths, newborns don’t need soap/shampoo etc, just water is fine. She might have swallowed a bit of air with the water if it surprised her so might have tummy pain, try lying her on her back and alternate between gently ‘cycling’ her legs and rubbing her tummy clockwise

I think OP means she had her in the baby bath held over her arm but was pouring water over her which is why she’s said ‘showering’

skinnyhotchoc · 23/05/2020 22:13

I bought a new washing up bowl and put her in that until she was bigger. She loved it

It is probably unrelated.... Keep breastfeeding.. And if she cries feed again, then feed again . At 9 days old she will still be wanting to be cluster fed.. She will just want to be close to you. Its exhausting, you but its unlikely anything is wrong from swallowing a little water unless there's more to it?? Are you a member of breastfeeding groups on fb etc?

Hello Elie123. The best advice that we got before having our DDs was to get a baby bath sponge. They are great and take the stress out of bath time- I was petrified of dropping my daughters as they got so slippery! Try not to worry, I’m sure that you little one will be back to normal soon, but if you are concerned just call 111. Also, try to look after yourself, it is a very tiring and stressful time for any new parent.
