Why is MN so quiet?

Usually threads are moving so fast there's a brand new page of posts every time you look.

I can't work out whether it's because people don't have anything to talk about or if everyone's moved over to that new forum?

OP posts:
Pavlova31 · 22/05/2020 04:20

Hello Op.
I was thinking the same myself about the lack of new posts on here .
I did not know anything about a new forum.
Is that on here or on another website?
No need to be specific in details but i was just curious.

Pavlova31 · 22/05/2020 04:27

I am starting to come on here less now as a result though .

Chinchinatti · 22/05/2020 04:30

What's the new forum?

thesuperfluousone · 22/05/2020 04:30

The new forum is crap.

IHateCoronavirus · 22/05/2020 04:31

There is slot of hate on here at the moment and a lot of posters have commented That they will stay away for the mental health.

Allnamesaregone · 22/05/2020 04:41

The breakaway forum is no better than here. There’s only 1400 members.

Pavlova31 · 22/05/2020 04:42

I understand what you are saying IHate.

itswonkylampshade · 22/05/2020 04:42

Makes you wonder how many users are active here at a time.

TazSyd · 22/05/2020 04:44

I don’t think the new site has a lot of posters (I’ve had a read of it but not signed up), however they do seem to be quite prolific posters.

I agree with posters who have said there is a lot of negativity on MN at the moment, I’m spending less time on here because of that.

Less active users hasn’t come at a good time for MN, given that they are asking for money due to ad revenue being down. Not sure what the answer is, other than deleting negative posts/threads.

Pavlova31 · 22/05/2020 04:47

I remember someone on here a couple of weeks ago saying they were starting up their own forum (website)
Can't remember the exact details but is this the one being referred to ?
I don't want to give my payment details to upgrade to Premium in case Mumsnet gets hacked again Sad

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 22/05/2020 04:50

I think people in general just have less to talk about! We aren’t doing anything or going anywhere.

Pavlova31 · 22/05/2020 04:51

I think some moderating and deleting could be a step in the right direction TazSyd.

TazSyd · 22/05/2020 04:56

Yes, it’s a balance though. Some posts / threads are just scaremongering / fake news and I think perhaps that should be clamped down on more.

Pavlova31 · 22/05/2020 04:56

Good point too Georgie.

NOTANUM · 22/05/2020 05:18

It's the rudeness that astounds me these days on Mumsnet.

You say something benign like "I think you should think about offering 5% less than the asking price" and the first reply is guaranteed to say "Fuck off, it's people like you who have ruined the country". Hmm
I would go onto twitter if I wanted that..
I left once and stayed away for a year because it didn't feel a happy forum. I've just come back but we will see.

Pavlova31 · 22/05/2020 05:31

Also convincing sounding troll posts.
There was someone on the Bereavement board recently having her husband "suddenly die and left with five children".
Was given a lot of sympathy and good advice before being exposed as a hoax .
They were a previously banned poster Sad

ElizabethMainwaring · 22/05/2020 05:34

The new forum is called mumschat.
I joined. It's not much cop.
They talk about (slag off) Mumsnet a lot.
It's a bit daft really.

Pavlova31 · 22/05/2020 05:34

Good point there NOTANUM.

TazSyd · 22/05/2020 05:36

Problem is, there are “professional” trolls out there and some appear to have well developed trolling skills. Hard to spot.

I read this earlier, it’s an industry wide problem:

ArcWorc · 22/05/2020 05:41

I’ve looked at the other site, but am hard pressed to find anything that isn’t just bagging this site. The hate directed towards here is astounding - the majority of threads seem to consist of spewing vitriol about some facet of this site, the owner, and even specific posters here. Most posts seem to be by the same posters, about the same topics (hating MN, hating the owner, hating certain threads here, hating certain posters here). I was hoping for an alternative space, but when the vast majority of the posts seem to reference here anyway, I may as well stay put....

Pavlova31 · 22/05/2020 05:44

True and an interesting article there TazSyd.

Booboostwo · 22/05/2020 05:45

It’s been getting slower for a while, 12-18 months imo, but Covid may have been the dying blow.

Aridane · 22/05/2020 05:46

I don’t think trolls are the problem, more general spiteful ness , a deter, inaction to lay into, posters and relentless ageism (and other isms). Though it can also be fab

TazSyd · 22/05/2020 05:50

Has there been an update since the original thread asking people to subscribe? I think mumsnet said they needed 10% of active users to subscribe to keep the site going. Just wondering if they got the numbers they needed signing up to premium?

reallythislong · 22/05/2020 05:51

It just feels a little stale. I wonder if the younger generations do instagram instead.
