Help me like wine.

Hi all,

I really want to like white wine but I cannot find one I like. All my friends love nothing more than a nice cold glass of wine and I just don't ( it's bugged me since I was in my 20's, I'm now 40's). I honestly just don't understand what's so nice about it, it makes my head hurt, makes me thirsty for water and just doesn't taste nice. I do enjoy red wine with a meal, and enjoy champagne as well. Can't stand dry white wine or Prosecco and the smell of rose makes me heave! Can any of you lovely people suggest something sweet ( not lambrini lol) that I might enjoy?

Doubt you'll be able to like it. Just like what you like. I know plenty who don't like wine.

Ninkanink · 21/05/2020 16:29

Why? Just like what you like and maybe try something else instead. Do you like gin?

Crystal87 · 21/05/2020 16:30

Try a fruit fusions flavour. They're a lot sweeter.

Little bit weird you want to like it 😬

MoMandaS · 21/05/2020 16:31

Riesling.

Namechangervaver · 21/05/2020 16:36

Most people tend to have a preference for white or red. It's not mandatory to like white wine, or any wine or alcohol for that matter Confused

Ninkanink · 21/05/2020 16:36

Or, why not try more varieties of non-alcoholic drinks? There’s no need to drink alcohol if it doesn’t appeal to you...Or is it just wine you don’t like?

There are all sorts of cordials and things that can be made with sparkling water to make it feel a bit more special: Elderflower, rhubarb and ginger, lime and lemongrass, fruit and ginger, rose hip. And that’s just off the top of my head...

I like a tonic with a few dashes of angostura, some lime and lots of ice.

moonset · 21/05/2020 16:39

Just don't have it!

If you must try to search for the perfect one a fruity one perhaps?

Bridecilla · 21/05/2020 16:39

I know what you mean. I'm not a big fan but when we used to go out my friends will share bottles of wine and I want to join in and be a sophisticated wine lover 🤣

crustycrab · 21/05/2020 16:40

I don't like sweet wine or red and only like rose if it's dry. It would never cross my mind to force myself to like it.

Just drink what you like

Ninkanink · 21/05/2020 16:41

You can change the taste of Prosecco or other white wines (sparkling or not) quite markedly by adding chambord or something similar. But you’d probably still get the head aches & other effects.

TheMostHappy · 21/05/2020 16:41

I really don't enjoy white or red. I like a white Grenache or Zinfandel rose though!! Or an Asti Spumante for a bit of fizz. I don't like drinking anything dry or bitter.

userabcname · 21/05/2020 16:42

When things are more normal, have a go at wine tasting! I have found a couple of wines I really enjoy that way and it's also a lot of fun.

monkeytennis97 · 21/05/2020 16:43

I like red. White is either meh or like vinegar for me so totally get how you feel.

OrangeGinLemonFanta · 21/05/2020 16:44

Don't bother. I love a nice white wine but I can't drink it when I'm out, it makes me sick if I go over 2 drinks.

RainWoman19 · 21/05/2020 16:44

19 Crimes is a nice red, recently recommended to me by a friend.

wewillmeetagain · 21/05/2020 16:48

Thankyou for your replies. I know it's pathetic and odd but I just want to be able to " join" in. I do enjoy gin and will drink that more often than not when we go out. Thankyou for your suggestions, I will be buying a couple to try next time I go shopping.

MINEareCRAFTy · 21/05/2020 16:51

I feel exactly the same. I can't relate to liking it at all, it's gross. However I also used to feel the same about red wine and now I bloody love it so who knows? I did have to persevere with red though and I don't want to have to do that with white so probably won't bother Grin

Inextremis · 21/05/2020 16:51

Try a Gewurztraminer - they can be sweet and floral, but not cloying. I know Waitrose do a couple of nice ones.

countdowntonap · 21/05/2020 16:52

If you like champagne, I would’ve thought you’d like a dry white wine. Which have you tried?

NeverHadANickname · 21/05/2020 16:52

I didn't like wine either until I moved and now have loads of lovely wineries locally. I like sweet white wines or fruit wines, moscato is my favorite.

countdowntonap · 21/05/2020 16:53

Forgive me, just seen that champagnes have a scale of sweetness. Which is your favourite champagne?

BissueTox · 21/05/2020 16:55

Sauvignon blanc is a lovely white, especially if it's a New Zealand Marlborough, it's a very crisp clean flavour.

Pinot Grigio is agreeable too, again it's a dry white.

Ninkanink · 21/05/2020 16:55

Asti Spumante is a good shout. You might like one that’s on the sweet side.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 21/05/2020 16:59

I like Moscato and Trebbiano. I'm not keen on red though, I have to be in the mood for it otherwise it gives me a headache.
