Was I wrong to do this? Bins

Since they stopped collecting green bins my rubbish gathered. We are a large family.

I had a pile of bin bags in my front garden. Which attracted neighbourhood rats.

I don't drive so can't go tip.
Don't have the money to get it collected privately.

My black bin was full.

The bin men come to my house then go round the block. I have a passage down the side of my house leasing to a back avenue.

After the binmen came I filled the bin up with the bags in my garden and wheeled the bin down the passage and left it in the avenue, 10 mins later I brought it back after it being emptied Blush

It stunk and I asked the binmen if they could take a little and they said no.

It had been there weeks :(

How would they know? Better than it becoming a health hazard.

MissDollyMix · 21/05/2020 13:53

Sounds quite ingenious to me but I’m sure the ‘Holier than thou’ brigade will be along to chastise you soon enough. Mumsnet isn’t a great place for kindness or reassurance these days.

Genius idea!

11MrsLuther · 21/05/2020 13:54

I think it was inspired idea and yes I would have done this too!

WithIcePlease · 21/05/2020 13:55

Bin men at my last house were fab. Give them a tenner and they'd take anything
Ones where I am now are v strict

Windyatthebeach · 21/05/2020 13:56

Genius op!! Did you change clothes to add to the 'cunning plan'??
I don't think any binmen /persons were harmed in your actions.
Rest easy...
For conformation Council and rubbish dealings are, well rubbish...
When we moved here - family of 8 - we were allowed 1 green bin. Bigger bins came into use and we were provided with 1 in exchange for normal size one.
They binmem refused to empty it as it was too full /heavy.
Bin emptying is fortnightly and it was August.... this is relevant..
They council told dh he had to empty the bin half way and take the bags to the tip himself by car. Envynot envy.
They took away the big bin and gave us 2 normal size ones.
So they 'invented' a bigger bin that can't be filled because the wagon can't lift them..
What a joke!!

Topseyt · 21/05/2020 13:56

Maybe we have just been lucky, but our bin men have been coming every week since lockdown began and have collected everything as per the schedule.

Sometimes they have arrived very late in the afternoon, but seem to be getting back to something approaching normal now.

Call your local council and ask what provisions there are for your problem. You won't be alone with it.

WithIcePlease · 21/05/2020 13:56

No wrong at all IMO

Smollle · 21/05/2020 13:57

Yes they have cameras on the bin they said and can get fired for taking extra bags!

Obviously it's not something I usually do but the council said they couldn't do anything even thought the rats were making nests in them Envy

I am impressed - that’s genius thinking! Smile I like your style!

Technically I suppose you were wrong but it is ridiculous that they won’t take the rest, so I wouldn’t feel an ounce of guilt for doing that and just be very happy that you had managed to get rid of the rubbish. Way better than having it sat there in the heat and rats!

They won’t have counted bins and realised there is an extra one - nobody will have noticed! Don’t worry about it!

picklemewalnuts · 21/05/2020 13:58

It's good that some of the excess waste has gone, but it's going to keep being a problem. Perhaps we can help you sort it? What is it that's building up, is it garden waste? Veg peelings?

Topseyt · 21/05/2020 13:58

Should add that I would have done as you did when things got desperate too. Refuse collection is surely an essential service.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 21/05/2020 14:00

Since they stopped collecting green bins my rubbish gathered

Where I live, green bins is general waste. Is it the same for you? Which council stopped collecting general waste?

Saucery · 21/05/2020 14:00

Sneakily inspired! Grin
It was one bin, they can load it safely onto the cart.....I done see how anyone could have a problem with that?

IhateBoswell · 21/05/2020 14:02

Wish I could have seen you sneaking it there and sneaking back again 😂

dementedpixie · 21/05/2020 14:03

I imagine it was garden waste rather than general waste. Some councils suspended the collection of certain bins and then closed the recycling centres too

avroroad · 21/05/2020 14:03

Green bins are garden waste here. What are your green bins OP?

ABagOfPopcorn · 21/05/2020 14:03

I used to wheel my bin to another street whenever they missed my bin or when I forgot to put it out Smile

Ratbagcatbag · 21/05/2020 14:07

That's genius. And if it's still an issue I'd do it on the next collection too.
The bin men won't actually know and you get your rubbish cleared.

Are any of your neighbours bins not full? Can you use any space in theirs? On our street the general agreement is once's it out on the pavement you can add your rubbish to it if needed. My garden waste bin (we have to pay for that here) has usually got at least one other neighbours grass cuttings in it.

Smollle · 21/05/2020 14:08

Green bins are food and garden waste.

So all my food had to go in my general waste. I also had a massive clear out because there was nothing better to do.

So I don't usually have nay extra waste so it won't keep happening.
Bin collection is back to normal.

picklemewalnuts · 21/05/2020 14:12

A wormery can handle surprising amounts of waste, if you are still struggling. I bought one, but with hindsight would just make my own in future.

SquirtleSquad · 21/05/2020 14:19

Great thinking OP don't worry about it, better than all the fly tippers my way Angry

ekidmxcl · 21/05/2020 14:21

I didn't understand the green/black business as we have different here but now that you have clarified, YANBU. Getting rid of waste is a high priority at the current time and you used the only option available to you.

MillicentMartha · 21/05/2020 14:21

Our council asked us not to have big clear outs until things were back closer to normality.
