Was I wrong to do this? Bins

Since they stopped collecting green bins my rubbish gathered. We are a large family.

I had a pile of bin bags in my front garden. Which attracted neighbourhood rats.

I don't drive so can't go tip.
Don't have the money to get it collected privately.

My black bin was full.

The bin men come to my house then go round the block. I have a passage down the side of my house leasing to a back avenue.

After the binmen came I filled the bin up with the bags in my garden and wheeled the bin down the passage and left it in the avenue, 10 mins later I brought it back after it being emptied Blush

It stunk and I asked the binmen if they could take a little and they said no.

It had been there weeks :(

Yes they have cameras on the bin they said and can get fired for taking extra bags!

I take it you meant the bin lorry and not the bin?

I came in here to tell you off as I immediately thought you had out your rubbish in someone else’s bin, but instead I was to give you a long distance pat on the back. That was sneaky and brilliant. Well done, OP.

Sorry yes the lorries Blush

Thank goodness for that! The thought of the poor camera operator seeing me in a state of undress as I chuck rubbish in the bin! 😱

krustykittens · 21/05/2020 14:36

I don't blame you at all, OP, if it is attracting rats it is a serious health hazard and if you can't drive, what are you supposed to do? We have been very lucky as our bin collections have continued as normal - our recycling centre is shut so we wouldn't be able to get rid of it otherwise.

Poppyismyfavourite · 21/05/2020 14:40

Wish I'd thought of this... I left an extra bag next to our bin, which they haven't taken. But the road to the side of our house has their rubbish collected the next day!

wonkylegs · 21/05/2020 14:46

Nah sounds like an ingenious solution to the problem
We've had no interruption to rubbish and recycling collections - they stopped emptying street bins, dog poo bins and the optional additional payment garden waste service but everything else remained the same. Our tip however was closed and has only just reopened if you make a (free) appointment.
They have huge issues with fly tipping at the best of times round here so I think the logic was that they couldn't stop collecting or they would have a bigger problem.

Viviennemary · 21/05/2020 15:09

It was a reasonable thing to do under the circumstances.

VenusClapTrap · 21/05/2020 16:03

I have done the same with my recycling bin in the past. I live on a corner; my official collection is on the main road but if I leave the bin out on the side street on their collection day, it gets emptied there too.

BarbedBloom · 21/05/2020 16:35

We have a similar issue. They stopped collecting green garden waste over winter and haven't started again due to Covid. Our neighbor has giant sycamore trees that shed all over our garden so we have to clean it up or garden wouldn't be usable. Tips are closed and we don't have a car anyway. I would have done the same if I could

Mammyloveswine · 21/05/2020 16:36

I asked my bin men last week if they'd take my extra bags-they took all five! Will get them a pack of beers and box of biscuits next week as a thank you!

amymel2016 · 21/05/2020 16:38

Have you put your green waste in bin bags?!

nitgel · 21/05/2020 16:39

Its hot but i dont understand 'It stunk and I asked the binmen if they could take a little and they said no.' Take a little what ?

vanillandhoney · 21/05/2020 16:44

If green is food and garden waste, why was it in bin bags?

SunflowerSeedsForever · 21/05/2020 16:51

Genuis

My general waste and recycling goes out the front but the garden waste out the back as we front 2 roads. Why didn't I ever think of this

dementedpixie · 21/05/2020 16:57

@vanillandhoney our food waste goes into green compostible food waste bags provided by our council

dementedpixie · 21/05/2020 16:59

But as they werent collecting food/garden waste then OP needed to put extra in her general waste bin so would have put it into ordinary bin bags
