How can I get some privacy?

Please don't say move house Sad

My house is positioned at such an angle that the back garden is at the side and is really the front of the house.

I feel like I'm living in a goldfish bowl Sad

How can I get some privacy in my house?

I have 2 children and am overrun with friends running into the garden. Constantly.

Any ideas? I love my house but I hate having no privacy Sad

I'm confused as the picture looks like you have a high fence all the way round?

BananasInHavannah · 20/05/2020 20:01

The fence is high but lots of gaps if that makes sense

Net curtains.

Voile.

Regular curtains that let enough light through.

Frosted window film.

Probably other options too.

BananaChocolateLump · 20/05/2020 20:09

You were stupid enough to move in.

VettiyaIruken · 20/05/2020 20:13

Run that fake hedging along it. It's not the prettiest but it's cheap and effective. Or find something else to line the fence.
How are kids actually getting into the garden? The gaps don't look big enough for a child to fit through.

footprintsintheslow · 20/05/2020 20:17

@BananaChocolateLump what an uhelpful person you are or are you just having a bad day?

crustycrab · 20/05/2020 20:18

How are kids running in?

Sharkyfan · 20/05/2020 20:19

Can’t really tell what the issue is from that picture to be honest?
The fence looks quite substantial and no gaps (big enough for people to get through) showing?

footprintsintheslow · 20/05/2020 20:20

OP how about you get some big planters and grow something that will cover the fence and grow fast like Passiflora. Looks nice and grows like a weed

Where are all the kids running? Into your garden? Like they're just running in? Confused

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 20/05/2020 20:28
  • new solid fence panels
  • the willow or reed screen panels like this

www.wilko.com/en-uk/wilko-reed-4m-x-2m-garden-fence-screening/p/0297986

  • a hedge or bamboo running around your garden
  • window treatments like voile or the film that makes it opaque. You could do cafe rods and voiles just half way down your windows so you still get light through over the top.

Some great ideas and I knew mumsnetters would be able to offer advice 🙂

Kids are getting in side gate. We have 2 side gates and they just run a loop right round house as we've a big slide that they seem to like.

It was a question of location over house but I have to work with what I've got.

pooopypants · 20/05/2020 20:35

Apologies if I've missed something..... just lock the gate(s)?

Lipz · 20/05/2020 20:36

That's crazy kids just coming in. Let a roar at them to get out. Get a padlock for the gate.

TweetUsOnFacebook · 20/05/2020 20:38

This is a very confusing situation.
Get a bolt for the gate and if the kids starting knocking or shouting tell them they can't come round.

BananasInHavannah · 20/05/2020 20:38

I've just moved in and don't want people to hate me and kids

OP posts:
Lipz · 20/05/2020 20:40

I wouldn't give a shit, I'd tell them to get out, go back to their own garden, that's your property they're trespassing on.

EatsShootsAndRuns · 20/05/2020 20:40

Then if you're not prepared to lock the gates they'll continue running in. Up to you.

Do you want to be popular or a pushover?

ClementineTangerine · 20/05/2020 20:40

Definitely just bolt the gate, and put up the bamboo liner things that the person above posted.

Wonder what the hell the parents are doing letting their young kids out to run around when they should be at home? Confused

NoParticularPattern · 20/05/2020 20:40

You don’t want people to hate you but you’re happy to live somewhere that you hate the lack of privacy? Riiiiight. Lock the gates. Tell them to do one.

StopMakingATitOfUrselfNPissOff · 20/05/2020 20:41

Just lock the gate! Why the bleeding hell wouldn't you?!

CatBatCat · 20/05/2020 20:46

Lock the gate

Rhubardandcustard · 20/05/2020 20:46

Gate bolts and paddocks. Don't know why you would let everyone come wondering into your back garden just because they have easy access. F upsetting the neighbours and their kids.
