is teams better than zoom?

fartyface · 19/05/2020 21:25

We use zoom for work a lot, but given the recent issues I am looking for reliable and secure alternatives. It turns out I can register for a free account. Is this just as good as Zoom? are there any limitations? Is there any reason why all my colleagues cannot also just set up a free account?

One of the things I like about zoom is that I can live stream the important meetings to youtube. Is this possible on teams? Or similar way to publish?

Thanks

Hi I use teams
You can record sessions but dont know about live stream to youtube
You can host presentations to hundreds of people who can comment in a q&a and have a co host who can share the presentation

We dont use zoom so not sure of the functionality but we can store all our useful documents in files so they are easy to access and create sub teams so i may have a teams group for the people i manage and we chat throughout the day and I post updates or tasks and save all relevnt work in the file
Ill have another team for me and my peers where we do the same
A further team with another department that we work closely with to help manage our joint operation etc

I like it. Downside though this week its been extremely tempermental and kicking me out alot but this may be my location and wifi signal in the house

Our work group of seven people used Zoom for some extended conferences last week and it largely worked well. But we also want a platform where we can share files and have a more extended chat function than Zoom - so we've bern trying out Teams this week.
It's been absolutely catastrophic - mainly getting people to sign in to the team is the problem. I already had a paid Microsoft account for cloud storage, but that just wouldn't work so I ended up creating an entirely new free account. After two days everyone in the group has had some sort of technical issue and two people haven't even been able to join. And today three separate people vented about their hatred of MS and Teams in capital letters! We're nearly at the point of abandoning ship in favour of our next option: Zoho.
So my conclusion if you just want conferencing and not other functions: definitely go for Zoom. It's so much more intuitive.

whhho · 19/05/2020 21:54

I use ZOOM and TEAMS. Absolutely hate Teams due to connection issues. There isn't a single meeting we've had where at least
1 person can't sign in. I personally often have issues and although it should be very easy to click and join a meeting, inevitably it fails often. Zoom all the way for me if I had the choice.

Dicebeehive · 19/05/2020 22:00

You can only see max four people at once in Teams, you can see loads more on Zoom. For that single reason alone, I much prefer Zoom, as you don't 'forget' the quiet people and everyone seems more engaged.

hallamoo · 19/05/2020 22:01

I think Teams has been upgraded, or maybe my company has paid for an upgrade, because we can now see 16+ people.

Eyewhisker · 19/05/2020 22:03

Teams has just updated to now show more than 4 people. We use Teams for work and have found it to be great. You do need to make sure that everyone is on the latest version of the browsers though - some old ones don’t support Teams.

ItsGoingTibiaK · 19/05/2020 22:03

I have never, not once, been able to join a Teams meeting first time with no issues. It’s a pain in the arse. Zoom just works, for me.

Whathewhatnow · 19/05/2020 22:08

I imagine Teams probably works ok in a corporate environment with tech support.

The interface is horrible! Really non-intuitive.

EmmaC78 · 19/05/2020 22:14

I assumed it was my home broadband connnection that made Teams unusable for me but from reading this thread it seems others have the same problem.

I can never join a meeting first time. It always crashes, says there is a glitch and i have to close it and start again. It is so frustrating.

fia101 · 19/05/2020 22:19

Tried both and found zoom much more user friendly. The 'raise your hand' icon is great for big meetings when you want to speak. Also has a virtual waiting room if anyone needs to be excluded temporarily from meeting due to conflicts

Ontheboardwalk · 19/05/2020 22:21

Isn’t Zoom a huge security risk?

It’s completely banned for any work talk at the company I work for

Ontheboardwalk · 19/05/2020 22:24

I’ve noticed with Teams if you stop people dicking around with backgrounds and are on mute when not talking (feedback from the device) it works really well. I’ve had 20 (corporate account) with no issues up to now

BigSandyBalls2015 · 19/05/2020 22:24

I thought Teams only worked on iPhones and iPads. Can’t get it to work on my laptop.

Zoom works fine but concerned about the confidentiality.

AnotheChinHair · 19/05/2020 22:30

Zoom all the way for me
Ontheboardwalk I think a lot has changed in a month, but people's perception might not be changing as fast as the technology...

fartyface · 19/05/2020 22:33

This is very interesting, I thought everyone would say that teams is much better.

We limit zoom to non confidential materials, and would like to find a solution to that.

Is there a limit to the number of people that can access a free teams call? Or a duration limit?

We wouldn't have tech support as IT are still back in the 80s.

Found Teams difficult to join. Zoom was much easier.

ouch321 · 19/05/2020 22:34

I use both actually for work and def find that they both have their pros and cons.

You can have free accounts with both as well to try and see how you fare.

badg3r · 19/05/2020 22:45

We use zoom to socialise and teams for business. I prefer teams fit business because:

It is integrated with outlook so easy to schedule meetings
The notes section is good
You can use it as a work platform and for working on projects together etc in a way you can't with zoom
We also use the chat function a lot instead of WhatsApp
The calendar function is good

It took us all a while to iron out the creases but now we have all got the hang of it i would not use zoom

FerneGreene · 19/05/2020 22:48

I hate Teams.

Google Meet seems pretty good,

Splitsunrise · 19/05/2020 22:49

Find teams really easy. I use on computer and phone.

Pirandello24 · 19/05/2020 22:50

Teams is useful if you want to have a space to store files and work on them interactively with your team members. But for video conferencing I think zoom is easier to use, plus with teams you can only see 4 faces during meetings. Also, as a pp mentioned, it's been a nightmare for us to set up- there is always half the team note being able to log on etc. Have to considered Google Meet? It is similar to zoom and looks easy to use

Munchietime · 19/05/2020 22:51

We use Teams and did before the current situation. It works well for us and is even better now we can see more than 4 people at a time. We use it to share files and it's connected to onedrive. It's integrated to outlook so easy to invite people and to join meetings. Easy to share a presentation too.

We're forbidden to use zoom for the security issues and if we have to eg, if we're not the host just attending, we've been told to use a browser only, not to download the app.

ilovebluecheese · 19/05/2020 22:52

Having used Teams and Zoom.
Teams is much much better.
Everything the better about it sound quality, video quality. Set up is easy.

Zoom wasn't very good at picking up who was talking.

Plus I have just found out you can change your background on zoom!!!!!!!

Ontheboardwalk · 19/05/2020 23:13

AnotheChinHair things might have changed in the last month when the serious breaches from Zoom have come to light but they never should have happened in the first place

Abbccc · 19/05/2020 23:17

How about skype? There's also a business version.
