@BarkandCheese I think that might be David Spiegelhalter's theory. DH has a bit of a man-crush on the Spieg.

thenightsky · 21/05/2020 09:28

Oh Dear. I've just seen on another thread that people who break lockdown should be charged with murder.

I knew I shouldn't have wandered away from this lovely safe thread.

Dollybagwash · 21/05/2020 09:31

Apparently Scottish schools are finishing up 2 weeks early and teacher back in from the 11th of August and kids go back 2 weeks after that! Email from Argyll and Bute council!

What the fuck!! This isn't my council sent from a teacher friend but if that's the case what a disgrace!

11 week summer holiday! I have no words!

Drivingdownthe101 · 21/05/2020 09:31

Ah yes, murder.

the unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by another

That’s exactly what you’re doing when you sneak your mum in for a coffee in your garden.

Cattermole · 21/05/2020 09:35

Yeah but don't forget @Drivingdownthe101 you might be asymptomatic and give it to your mum who might be asymptomatic and then she might pass it on to the dog outside the shop who might pass it on to some random and eventually YOU will have given it to an NHS nurse and then a fairy will die.

Nihiloxica · 21/05/2020 09:37

I've just seen on another thread that people who break lockdown should be charged with murder.

Grin

That was me.

I also posted about my modelling that indicated everyone was going to die eventually.

The whole thread is ridiculous.

Every pretext for prolonging lockdown until impossible conditions are met.

TeacupDrama · 21/05/2020 09:39

@dollybagwash, I'm in Argyll haven't seen this email is it private

KatsutheClockworkOctopus · 21/05/2020 09:40

One of the most difficult things for me has been dealing with the dichotomy of the actual stats, which are reassuring, and the general hysteria which is massively disproportionate.

This lockdown will affect so many people is so many far reaching ways. It should be planned and implemented based on facts, not by who screeches loudest on Twitter.

KaronAVyrus · 21/05/2020 09:43

I really hope that isn’t true about the 11 week holiday in Scotland.
My DS is doing his Nat 5s next year and it is an utter disgrace about how much school has been missed and the pitiful support received from the school. When did a child’s right to receive an education become optional?

TheGreatWave · 21/05/2020 09:47

Yes I agree we need to look at excess deaths over the year (even possibly two) to be able to guage the true extent, especially with the died of /with.

I know at a personal level it will be felt that others were taken "too early" but the overall picture could be interesting, especially as it maybe that other causes have dropped. From a pure numbers pov it will be fascinating.

OP posts:
DrearyWallAntler · 21/05/2020 09:50

@BarkandCheese

Absolutely. The frothing about the excess deaths is marginally misplaced.

Yes, we have experienced a huge peak for the last month over and above the average. And yes, had that continued that would have been bad.

However, because people can't die twice just as much as they can't be resurrected the metric of excess deaths will only paint a clear picture of the impact when viewed over a statistically significant time frame. As deaths tend to follow 12 month cycles then looking at it over 12 months would be a bare minimum. 24 or 36 months would be better given the life expectancy of people in care homes.

The restrictions we have seen are a blunt tool, so we will likely see a reduction in other infectious causes of death as well over the next few months.

Dollybagwash · 21/05/2020 09:50

Not sure it was sent to me by a teacher. The kids education is decimated at this point. It has just destroyed me this morning. I cannot do this shit until August.

ThrowbackMagic · 21/05/2020 09:51

Late to the thread. What is a dementor?

AnotherEmma · 21/05/2020 09:56

Fictional characters from Harry Potter.
"Dementors are dark creatures that consume human happiness, creating an ambiance of coldness, darkness, misery and despair."

In the context of this thread and coronavirus, people who do the above.

duckme · 21/05/2020 10:03

We've arranged a socially distanced fish and chip supper tomorrow night. As kids we used to do this with o ur parents, go and get fish and chips and take them to the common to eat on a picnic bench or in the car if it was cold. There are 13 of us going tomorrow night, my siblings and their families and my parents and I'm as excited as I would be if we were jetting off on holiday!

I think I need to only get my updates from this thread from now on. It feels as though the clouds have parted, birds are singing and there is hope again. I know it sounds a bit over dramatic but between the news, Piers Morgan and my Facebook feed, I've been in a bit so good place over the last week or so.

duckme · 21/05/2020 10:04

*not so good place.

Mrsfrumble · 21/05/2020 10:07

Wow! Prioritising clothes shopping over playgrounds? I mean, it’s a pain that I have to go and queue in the post office with returns after underestimating the size of my lockdown arse in a late night wine-fuelled online shopping binge, but to think that’s more important than children’s mental and physical health??? Confused

Bollss · 21/05/2020 10:10

I've just emailed both our local MPs about the council's announcement. I pointed out there was not one single sentence about the welfare of children in their statement. Not bloody one. Horrible gits.

thenightsky · 21/05/2020 10:12

@Nihiloxica

sorry, I didn't register who the poster was... I just thought 'oh god' and scuttled back here sharpish. Grin

DominaShantotto · 21/05/2020 10:18

Well I've requested my kids school hours for the week after half term. Feels a relief to actually get it done - even with the dark dark warnings about how stripped bare school is going to be (I know the staff and it won't be and the kids really don't give a shit about artwork on the wall once they've looked once and seen if their picture is up there).

littlbrowndog · 21/05/2020 10:19

I ffs I don’t think schools will go back September. Scream

Only 2 hours till Nicola reveals what stuff we will be allowed to do.

Dreading it but hoping for best

🙏🙏🙏🙏

trappedsincesundaymorn · 21/05/2020 10:24

Morning all. Don't mind me I'm just place marking.

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 21/05/2020 10:24

@littlbrowndog it’s like a dystopia isn’t it living in hope/fear that we might be allowed to legally see our friends and family. While we needed to create capacity in NHS I could see the rationale but the goalposts have moved so far from that while our freedoms remain curtailed it’s quite worrying

bakingcupcakes · 21/05/2020 10:26

Today I'm debating a murderous trip to the national trust place near me which has open car parks but closed toilets.

Yesterday was a good day. We went to my parents house and hid in the garden (luckily their neighbours are having visitors too) DS got to play football with grandad (at a safe but normal distance) and when we walked home he said 'That was really, really good mummy' I feel very sorry for him only having me to play with.

I've had a sensible email from school regarding opening 8th june. I was hoping this would be a way back to work for me but there's no wraparound care so although I could go to work I could only do 4 hours a day. I hope they'll be providing wraparound for September. If not I don't know what I'll do.

rookiemere · 21/05/2020 10:32

littlebrowndog me too. I've taken next week off and I'm hoping against hope that she might relax something prior to May 28th.
