Toast Toppings

I'm breastfeeding and spend most of the time feeling starved. I have a toddler as well as the DD2 so time is at a premium. A slice of toast is pretty easy to conjure up but I'm all out of ideas for what to put on it. I'm trying to avoid dairy as it seems baba isn't so good with it. I'm also trying to kick sugar.

Apart from peanut butter, any ideas?

Bovril is delicious on toast.

Jam? I love honey on toast too. And Nutella! But then I do have a sweet tooth

Marmite

avocado? I am a recent convert to this, but I do like it with more salt and butter than is decent, which won't suit your dairy/toddler needs.

Starting with easy ideas and getting gradually more elaborate (but still quick)...

Marmite
Hummus
Pate - meaty or mushroom or fishy
Smoked Salmon
Vegan cheese spread (an acquired taste!)
'Pizza toast' with tomato puree, vegan cheese if you want no dairy at all or just a scattering of cheese if OK, can add some chopped ham or salami. Or just have a sandwich?

Microwave scrambled eggs

Tinned sardines in tomato sauce. One sardine for each slice (three in a tin) and spread it out with a fork so it covers the slice. Don’t butter the toast though. It’s beautiful.

Assuming you don't want any 'prep' and you don't want to eat with cutlery, so "spread an go";

Mushrooms

Another vote for avocado but no butter. Poached eggs on toast is my all time favourite comfort food. Scrambled eggs on toast is quick & easy & you can add a splash of milk plus some dried herbs.

Ooh yes forgot about mushrooms. You could have tinned ones on toast. And this won’t be to everyone’s taste but I love tinned tomatoes on thickly buttered toast with black pepper. So good!

French toast is super quick and delicious.

DS used to like mashed sardines on toast when little. Think you can buy them in a tomato sauce??

I like tuna mayo on toast..with a couple of slices of cucumber on top.
I also like marmite and mashed banana.

Tomatoes.

Cold, sliced or out of a tin.

Add salt

Add olive oil, with or without garlic

And you have a toast version of a tostada. Oddly satisfying.

Almond butter is much nicer than peanut.

My afternoon favourite at the moment is toast with almond butter, cinnamon and some sliced banana.

Pilchards in tomato sauce

-Tinned smoked mackerel
-Avocado with some tomato, red onion and garlic finely chopped into it
-Almond butter with a little honey
-You could make a fruit compote with your preferable amount of sugar, can be done in just minutes. Always good with peanut butter or similar.

• good to pre boil some eggs and keep in the fridge, ready for an egg salad toastie of some sort?

Also diced tomato, a little garlic finely chopped, salt, pepper olive oil. Spoon onto hot toast. You will never look back!

This is hard because mostly on my toast it’s all dairy stuff like soft cheese / dairy Lea / seriously strong spreadable etc

My kids like chocolate spread and peanut butter mixed together on toast - it’s like a kind of snickers on toast 😆

Don't eat foie gras like my horrid brother does. Disgusting man!!!
