What is on top of your kitchen units?

Probably the most boring post I've ever started...

But we've always been a very cluttered house. I've been gradually decluttering for the past year which has helped a lot, but whenever I clear a surface, things get dumped on top (DP is the culprit, although in general I am messier) which drives me INSANE. I've been adding lots and lots of plants around the house to reclaim surfaces to try and stop this and it's helping, I've reclaimed several bookshelves, windowsills etc But the plant solution isn't perfect as they are expensive and I keep killing them so I can't do it everywhere.

My latest decluttering task was the kitchen units. I can't reach on top without climbing up, so I can't put useful kitchen things on there. In most Rightmove photos, they are lovely and bare, do people really manage this or have they been cleared in preparation? It is a large amount of useful space so I don't want to waste it and if it's empty, DH will keep filling it up with crap. I think I could put big curver baskets up there and use the space, but not sure what to put in there and don't need several basket versions of the 'random shit drawer'.

What about on top of bedroom wardrobes?

This stuff doesn't come naturally to me, I try so hard to give things a place and they all get mixed up.

Ouch I genuinely laughed at that comment.

Longdistance · 19/05/2020 00:03

We don’t have wall units, we have a pantry for this reason.
When we remodelled our house with the extension, I was adamant I wasn’t having wall units. We built a pantry for this reason.

Nothing, I hate clutter and stuff out, I live on my own so keep it stays that way.

Aw god loads of shit atm. I clear it every few months but things get chucked back up there all the time. We hardly have any storage in this little house though.

Wheresthebiffer2 · 19/05/2020 00:21

baking tins
large packets of cereal
spare kitchen rolls
a box with random baking things in (vanilla essence, cocoa powder etc)
a basin and cloth -for horrid cleaning like dog vomit off carpet
and lots of dust

iswhois · 19/05/2020 00:29

Ours go right up to the ceiling. Best decision ever

giantangryrooster · 19/05/2020 00:56

Coloured antique glasses (they get greasy fast Blush).

TenThousandSpoons · 19/05/2020 06:53

New kitchen: ceiling
Old (much smaller) kitchen: a boxed cutlery set, popcorn maker, blender, electric whisk, plate warmer and 2-3 extra boxes of cereal that didn’t fit in cupboard.

Ragwort · 19/05/2020 07:01

Numerous spare packs of my favourite Coffee so that I never run out, endless packs of crisps - hate the look of them but no where else to store - various large serving plates that can’t go anywhere else. It would be much better if the cupboards went right up to the ceiling, such a a waste of space and a real dust trap.

RJnomore1 · 19/05/2020 07:08

Nothing, another clutter hater and I’m sorta winning in the kitchen although I can’t wait for dd to go back to uni and take her giant wok which will only sit on the hob cos it’s too big for a cupboard with her.

I’m debating a decorative cat now though.

houseplantlover · 19/05/2020 07:12

Shit. So so much shit. Horrible cluttery random shit. All over my house. But especially on top of the cupboards. My house is the random junk drawer with shit everywhere and I hate it.

Toomanycats99 · 19/05/2020 07:18

Old kitchen - boxes slow cooker. Random fins for storing cakes in. Odd bag of dishwasher salt. Couple of other bits and bobs.

New kitchen has just a couple more cupboards which makes all the difference so it's clear and looks so much better .

vampirethriller · 19/05/2020 07:24

Cake tins and a box of biscuit cutters
Easiyo thing
Bubble wrap
Hair dryer

thebear1 · 19/05/2020 07:29

A slow cooker and a plastic tub for the huge bag of dried cat food we buy. Both things don't need easy access so I don't mind dragging a chair out to get them.

PorpentiaScamander · 19/05/2020 07:31

One has limited edition mugs on it. I never meant to turn it into a display but it was the only place I could put them so the DC wouldn't use them
The other has lightbulbs and ex DPs screwdriver set. Possibly a chocolate bar. (He used to hide them up there so when I had a craving for chocolate he could produce some).

Wardrobe has Harry Potter Loot Crates. I really should sort them out and actually do something with all the stuff! And an ornament my mum bought me, still in its gift bag because I can't decide where to put it.

And dust. So much dust. At least I assume there is dust. I cant see that high up

MurrayTheMonk · 19/05/2020 07:33

I've got two shallow wicker hamper type things which contain my China tea cups and saucers all wrapped up. I use them about once a year and I like them packed away out of the every day cupboards so they don't get broken by mistake.

There is a sack of spuds on top of the fridge and a huge bag of tea bags which look messy but nowhere else for them.

TSSDNCOP · 19/05/2020 07:33

A roll of turkey foil

In 18 years it has never occurred to me to clean them though. Is cleaning up there a thing Blush

turtletum · 19/05/2020 07:38

I have no gap above the cupboards, so nothing, but I wouldn't put anything there as I can't reach it. The top of the fridge accumulates random rubbish, which i hate. An old whiskey bottle tin, spare cat food bowls, plus other stuff inside a box that I can't see. I can't reach any of it without a chair but OH is the tall and messy one.
On top of wardrobes we have board games, ski stuff, xmas decorations, but we've had a loft conversion so don't have much storage space in the eaves.

LoadsaBlusher · 19/05/2020 07:40

Nothing
Wouldn’t ever put stuff up there as it’s a dust zone

iamabox · 19/05/2020 07:47

The bloody cat. And I bet he is going to vomit his breakfast up...

golddustwomen · 19/05/2020 07:48

I have some candles and a fake flower. Oh thinks it looks shit but I like it!

Glitterbubbles · 19/05/2020 07:50

Tupperwares (big ones that don't fit into the cupboard)
Massive bags of pasta and rice that we decant into Tupperware in the cupboard for easy access

Bedsheets4knickers · 19/05/2020 07:52

All the stuff I don't want my kids to play with 😳 kinetic sand , glitter and paint .

Ragwort · 19/05/2020 07:54

TSS I agree, never thought about cleaning the tops of the cupboards Grin

BlueGheko · 19/05/2020 07:57

Blankets for the cat, she likes to sleep up there, plus some plants and fairy lights.
