What is on top of your kitchen units?

Probably the most boring post I've ever started...

But we've always been a very cluttered house. I've been gradually decluttering for the past year which has helped a lot, but whenever I clear a surface, things get dumped on top (DP is the culprit, although in general I am messier) which drives me INSANE. I've been adding lots and lots of plants around the house to reclaim surfaces to try and stop this and it's helping, I've reclaimed several bookshelves, windowsills etc But the plant solution isn't perfect as they are expensive and I keep killing them so I can't do it everywhere.

My latest decluttering task was the kitchen units. I can't reach on top without climbing up, so I can't put useful kitchen things on there. In most Rightmove photos, they are lovely and bare, do people really manage this or have they been cleared in preparation? It is a large amount of useful space so I don't want to waste it and if it's empty, DH will keep filling it up with crap. I think I could put big curver baskets up there and use the space, but not sure what to put in there and don't need several basket versions of the 'random shit drawer'.

What about on top of bedroom wardrobes?

This stuff doesn't come naturally to me, I try so hard to give things a place and they all get mixed up.

Some decent wine glasses that we put back in the box after guests/xmas, and put up there so we don't use them, a random spent rocket that had fallen into our garden and was brought in by ds. I need to remember to chuck it Confused

Graphista · 18/05/2020 20:33

Gah misread! On top of my cupboards/units only dust as they're far too high for me to reach. I can barely reach the top shelves in the cupboards! So much wasted space.

When dd lived here she'd keep her snacks, cereal and drinks up there as she's much taller and can reach up there but she's 6'2" last time we checked

Lardlizard · 18/05/2020 20:33

Nothing as I like it all clean, can’t bear crap everywhere

Stuff that I don't want DS to be able to teach mainly.
Plus vases when they're not used because they're too tall for the cupboards and a neon sign that never actually gets switched on.

LoopyinLockdown · 18/05/2020 20:34

Nothing. When we had our kitchen done 2 years ago we had the extra tall wall units that leave a very small gap between the top of them and the ceiling.
I would rather use the top shelf inside the units (thatI can't reach work out a stool) for storing crap rather than have it on display.

We always had clutter and shit on top of our kitchen units but strangely don't miss it. My kitchen cupboards are full to the brim of kitchen stuff. I don't know where the crap has gone tbh, but probably shocked in a drawer or box upstairs I guess. The very high shelves are just for the stuff I rarely use, such as posh glasses, Christmas stuff, posh crockery, gravy boat etc.

Wardrobes, we had floor to ceiling built in doors across one whole wall. It's a mess inside but shut the doors and it's instantly tidy and uncluttered.

overtly · 18/05/2020 20:35

Nothing, apart from probably lots of dust. I can barely reach into the top shelf never mind on the very top to clean.

OhTheRoses · 18/05/2020 20:35

Nothing. They go up to the ceiling. Why would anyone facilitate dust collectors.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 18/05/2020 20:37

We don't have enough storage space in our house so we store all sorts on the top of the kitchen cupboards: small Xmas tree, decs and lights; a box with marker pens; paper towels; cleaning stuff; a shredder and some other crap.

purrswhileheeats · 18/05/2020 20:38

Oh @BarbaraofSeville she's making a mockery of you 😹😹

DarkDarkNight · 18/05/2020 20:39

I am trying to declutter too. My kitchen is tiny and very badly thought out with little cupboard space so I have an unopened pack of cereal that won’t fit in the cupboard and I keep the tin roll and baking parchment up there.

ClientQ · 18/05/2020 20:42

Dust. Sometimes a cat

I live in an old listed building, one half of my kitchen is approx twenty foot high, the other thirty foot. I’m not quite sure why you think my cupboards should go up that high but I don’t...generally when people’s cupboards don’t go up to the ceiling it’s because it’s a high ceiling,,,kinda obvious no?

Op I have large ornamental fruit, a huge apple, a pear, cherry etc up there, and on one I have a large silver bowl I can’t fit any place else, and a spare massive tin foil roasting dish that again I can’t fit any where and would only be used at Xmas..

HollyBollyBooBoo · 18/05/2020 20:45

Nothing, there's only a few inches between the top and the ceiling.

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 18/05/2020 20:46

Kitchen roll, boxes of tissues and snacks I don’t want the DC getting at.

pussycatinboots · 18/05/2020 20:48

OP, I think the consensus it you need to invest in some dust or a cat Grin

pussycatinboots · 18/05/2020 20:48

is not it stupid fat fingers...grrr

Megan2018 · 18/05/2020 20:49

Nothing. But bet it’s filthy,

The only cupboards with stuff on top are two of the wardrobes. One has the garden seat cushions (as we have mice in the shed that ate the last lot-bastards). The other has storage boxes of baby clothes we have been given in the next 2 sizes to what DD is wearing.
I hate clutter but this house is rubbish for storage unfortunately.

TreacherousPissFlap · 18/05/2020 20:53

Nothing, having just tarted up redesigned the kitchen.

I always viewed them as a potentially very useful "space" as we have a very small house, but realistically I can't reach them and they look awful with stuff on them.

The redesign saw me throw away approx a cubic tonne of stuff that we never used or liked, which has alleviated my storage issues greatly.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 18/05/2020 20:55

Gahhh we have loads of stuff like boxes of Paracetomol and plasters and cooking containers and sweets. It looks shite.

We are both tall so it’s accessible.

I clear it every so often and it arrives back again

SpillTheTeaa · 18/05/2020 20:57

Nothing. I also give it a dust over once a week

BrieAndChilli · 18/05/2020 20:57

God loads of stuff.
Massive bag of cookies cutters
2 boxes sets of plunge letter cutters
Boxes cake stands
Boxed wine glasses
Party serving platters
Cake boxes
Drinks dispensers
Giant Tupperware boxes
Coffee machine that only gets used when we have lots of visitors (otherwaise use pod coffee machine as only DH that drinks coffee so no point making a big jug of it)
Bread maker

Strawberrycreamsundae · 18/05/2020 20:58

Cake carrier because it’s too big for a cupboard, three fancy French biscuit tins, a large woven basket/tray thingy, my maslin preserving pan ( with jam and marmalade labels, muslin, thick oven gloves) and a tray of empty jam jars (from dd who wants to make marmalade sometime)
On top of my fire freezer in the utility room are two baskets of walking shoes/boots and the washing basket.

Strawberrycreamsundae · 18/05/2020 20:59

*fridge freezer ffs!

Gallacia · 18/05/2020 20:59

Toaster, kettle, candle, microwave, coffee machine, bread bin, steriliser, photo frame

I didn't think we had much but listing it we do! We have a reasonably big kitchen so it doesn't look cluttered

Lulu1919 · 18/05/2020 20:59

Nothing ,it would drive me crazy to have clutter up there !!!
