@SockYarn - In Wales and completely agree with you. I have no idea why they think that it's safer sending the kids back when it's running into flu season and harder to get them outside because of the weather. Surely better now while hospitals have capacity and they can be outdoors loads, then at least if it is a problem we have the summer holidays to have a rethink.

I think it's fascinating how the priorities have been garden centres and golf. I'm sure they are pretty safe, but surely as many people who are much higher risk than children go to them it's a more significant risk? My brother in law has been moaning missing golf and I think, imagine how my 8 year old daughter feels missing her friends and walking past taped up playgrounds?

Orangeblossom78 · 18/05/2020 08:43

Sockyarn I understand, I remember being there as a child and going to school and home in the dark! Up near Aberdeen, but inland...anyway it seems things might change in Scotland soon...hopefully

Orangeblossom78 · 18/05/2020 08:44

I just spike their milk with Vitamin D drops in the meantime (DCs) as they don;t like tablets. But it's not the same. It's the mental benefits of fresh air and sunlight...

Orangeblossom78 · 18/05/2020 08:46

"I think it's fascinating how the priorities have been garden centres and golf. I'm sure they are pretty safe, but surely as many people who are much higher risk than children go to them it's a more significant risk?*

I think they weighed up risk, and looked at wellbeing as well as economics (work return) to have a balance. I read that anyway.

MaxNormal · 18/05/2020 08:47

I suspect they looked at what would gladden the hearts of their voting demographic.

Orangeblossom78 · 18/05/2020 08:47

And they are putting more on personal responsibility as well with the "Be Alert" message so would possibly expect people of higher risk to judge the risk themselves a bit more.

Orangeblossom78 · 18/05/2020 08:48

Totally Max! Older people like garden centres, and golf! but also I guess younger ones paddle boarding...

Hollyhead · 18/05/2020 08:49

Haven't read the whole thread but I've found my people! Just saying hi, will check back later :)

Enjoy your picnics!

Bollss · 18/05/2020 08:50

Maybe I'm a cynic but children can't vote...
Nor can they really speak up for themselves.

How university students stuff is going online. Yes students as well as children have really missed out.

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 18/05/2020 08:54

@Orangeblossom78 - I completely agree that's what they've done, but the long term impact of this on children who are going to be left behind closed doors for months being abused and neglected doesn't bear thinking about. Even if you're only considering the economics, we know the impact of childhood neglect has on their future and it's very costly. To be fair, that's only if you bother funding services for the people you've thrown under a bus. Also, and far more importantly, it's completely immoral.

chrystelarts · 18/05/2020 08:56

Can someone post a link to previous threads so I can catch up please? I have found my people!

HauntedGoatFart · 18/05/2020 08:58

I could get really, really angry about what's been done to our children if I let myself. A huge hole blown in their education and wellbeing and social development, one that for many children will never close. So many children will never catch up academically. And it was not and never has been for their well-being. We've known since this came out of China that children were not at risk.

Willitneverend · 18/05/2020 08:59

@sockyarn apparently more tickets have been issued in Balloch than anywhere else and the ice cream shop is open but getting silent calls. There was a news story on it a few days ago.

SockYarn · 18/05/2020 09:06

On a positive note, I've become addicted to watching webcams around Europe to see how things are looking.

People out and about again in the city centre of Madrid
www.skylinewebcams.com/en/webcam/espana/comunidad-de-madrid/madrid/puerta-del-sol.html

People taking photos again of the Trevi Fountain in Rome
www.skylinewebcams.com/en/webcam/italia/lazio/roma/fontana-di-trevi.html

Movement and shops open in the ridiculously picturesque Italian south tyrol villages
www.skylinewebcams.com/en/webcam/italia/trentino-alto-adige/bolzano/san-candido.html

Life is getting back to normal there. We'll get back there soon too.

heroku · 18/05/2020 09:13

@SockYarn I'm the same as you as I really struggle in the winter. I had a bit of a down day yesterday as I realised I'd spent the whole winter working overtime, being boring and frugal so I could make the most of the summer. Now every single thing I was looking forward to this year (two music festivals, two weddings, a weekend away with old friends, a theatre trip with the family) have been cancelled. I know it's first world problems so I need to just get over it but I'm worried I'm going to be feeling mega depressed come January. Fingers crossed we can at least get some pub gardens open before the summer is over. I'll be down there every evening single-handedly saving the pub sector from financial collapse. What a hero.

CruCru · 18/05/2020 09:13

Yay! I found this thread.

Yesterday a load of boats were moored up next to our local beach and there were lots of people on the beach. A friend was annoyed about it and mentioned that a local restaurant is selling hampers so people can have picnics on their boats or on the beach. She's considering having a word with them about the picnics on beach thing. Am I going mad? Picnics on beaches are allowed now, aren't they?

Mascotte · 18/05/2020 09:15

@heroku I'm selflessly prepared to join your campaign to save pubs.

Did anyone see Naomi Campbell's tweet with a picture of herself in full on hazmat suit on a private plane?

Too funny.

GoldenOmber · 18/05/2020 09:16

Are our children also paid Tory stooges? I find this unlikely but OTOH it would explain a few things about my toddler.

Mascotte · 18/05/2020 09:22

Garden centres being open is also to save all the plants that are grown for a specific time and will just die if not sold. The centres will go bust too. So there's that.

I'm resigned that St Nicola of Dementors (thanks, @SockYarn 😂) will ensure that schools won't open for the foreseeable. It's so depressing. But my railing against it seems pointless as people seem to like this stuff.

HauntedGoatFart · 18/05/2020 09:25

I have no problem with garden centres being open, they needed to be able to sell their perishable stock and gardening is a very therapeutic thing to be doing right now. I wish they'd unlock the playgrounds now though, given that they're outdoors and children appear to be minimal spreaders.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 18/05/2020 09:25

Morning all.
I'm just going to sit here and watch the thread go by.

Shodan · 18/05/2020 09:36

Checking in for today's japes.

I'm taking ds2 out for as long a walk and picnic as my bladder can manage today.

Not only will there be potential for granny murdering, I'm letting him play hooky from 'school'.

So rebellious .
