I have a question. If, as (some) teachers and HT's are saying that children's education wont be impacted to heavily by not starting school in September, then why were parents fined for taking their children out of school during term-times because of the "impact to their education"? I'm sure the answer is simple but it's something that I've been pondering the last couple of days.

This, is an excellent point, and one they have no answer for. It really annoys me because you cant change the rules according to how you feel. Either being out of school is harmful or its not. It doesnt make it suddenly not harmful because you dont want to go to work!

Pertella · 16/05/2020 09:29

Morning all! Can I join?

I am murderkilling my daughter by sending her back to nursery on the 1st, and by extension murderkilling the key workers and children who have been attending nursery during lockdown too.

Mwahahaha! If i had a moustache I'd be twirling it...

beentothecoastalready · 16/05/2020 09:30

As I said before DH WANTS to get back to school. And has never joined in a strike!

He knows as a teacher hes on a good thing! So dont moan and whine like a sulky "angsty" teen!

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 16/05/2020 09:31

Mwahahaha! If i had a moustache I'd be twirling it

I imagine you petting a white cat in a swivel chair too!

Bollss · 16/05/2020 09:31

Apparently the answer to that @trappedsincesundaymorn is because they've all been off so they're all behind.

Except some kids will have done loads of work at home. Had attention from parents. Have siblings to talk to and play with. Others will have had none of that and will be at a massive disadvantage but of course that does not matter.

Nihiloxica · 16/05/2020 09:31

SirSamuel Yes, exactly. They had so much good will and they've blown it.

@Blobby10 Grin roaring laughing at the picture of you cycling cheerily through the minute's silence.

Drivingdownthe101 · 16/05/2020 09:33

Orangeblossom78 that interview is appalling. One of my friends has two children in private school. When schools first closed she posted something on Facebook about how hard it was trying to homeschool a 6 and a 5 year old. One of her friends from the school replied ‘well I read that only 1 in 50 state school kids are accessing any resources at all so at least we’re doing better than them’.
Them?! The bloody plebs?! Had to sit on my hands not to reply, as I sat there trying to home school my 6 and 4 year olds using the resources send from my plebby state school!
Yes, a lot of parents from state schools will be struggling to access resources and educate their children. No need to bloody gloat about it.

Drivingdownthe101 · 16/05/2020 09:34

(Just to mention that the head and the teachers at our school have been nothing but positive about returning)

HesterShaw1 · 16/05/2020 09:37

Morning

Re the question of the RNLI and rescue services....I have some knowledge on account of my current boyf and I several people I know being on the local crew. They're urging people to stay out of the water to protect themselves from infection risk. There's no CPR at the moment. And they don't want to drop people at the county's hospital in case of overloading it even though it's currently empty

My opinion with the lifeboat crews is that the levels of adulation they get are sometimes completely over the top. On their FB page it's as though their followers compete with each other about who can deify them the most. Apart from a couple per station, the crews are volunteers - they want to do the job and no one is holding a gun to their head. It's a bit like the screeching and frothing every time there's a big storm and people stand safely getting photos. "WHAT IF THEY NEEDED RESCUING?" etc. Or anyone who ever goes into the water - the level of spite and vitriol directed towards local surfers during the lockdown has been horrible.

OK a chap was pulled out of the sea the other day - hypothermia, clinging to his kayak, no buoyancy aid, no radio, nothing. He had driven down from the Midlands. That was bloody stupid. But it would have been stupid during non corona times too. Some people just are!

sueelleker · 16/05/2020 09:37

*I need to buy some plants

DH built some raised beds but neither of us CBA to stand in the queue at the garden centre for hours*
Order on-line? Thompson and Morgan are very good.

Drivingdownthe101 · 16/05/2020 09:38

Just seen an interesting article in a Spanish newspaper (I used to live in Spain and the in laws are still there so I follow their news) about the toll lockdown has taken on people’s bodies and fitness levels. I know we’re in a better position in that we’ve been allowed to exercise but all those who have been too scared to leave the house for 2 months are likely to struggle physically.

Bollss · 16/05/2020 09:41

I can totally believe that driving we've not done many walks because ds being only 4 doesn't really want to walk far and tbh the tantrums when he realised there is no end goal like ducks or the playground just aren't worth it. Anyway we did kids yoga yesterday. Aimed at small children. I am aching like you would not believe!

Orangeblossom78 · 16/05/2020 09:41

Thanks for replying about the RNLI.

Oh this is interesting.
Schools and workplaces posing coronavirus risk will be shut
www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/schools-and-workplaces-posing-coronavirus-risk-will-be-shut-7r6s7zknw

So the gov plans to shut workplaces or schools where the rate is rising until they sort out safety practices to allow them to re-open. Putting the responsibility onto those places in a 'whack a mole' type approach.

Wonder how that would work in practice.

heroku · 16/05/2020 09:42

The optics of this are appalling.

I totally agree. All the "thank you key workers" posters and adverts ring pretty hollow now some people have decided they're too special to be put at any risk at all. Yes I think we should support older people and those with health conditions to stay at home but the risk to young, healthy teachers is far outweighed by the risk to children's learning, mental health and social development. Especially those children in poorer homes. I feel angry that we're betraying children so badly.

GoldenOmber · 16/05/2020 09:42

Really nice, balanced piece from the Children's Commissioner for England on schools and nurseries reopening. www.childrenscommissioner.gov.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/cco-we-dont-need-no-education.pdf

"The debate around reopening schools can become very complex, with the hundreds of studies available and the myriad tweaks to classrooms and corridors under consideration. Amid this complexity, there is a very simple and unavoidable principle: either schools stay closed until a vaccine is developed, or they reopen before that point. If the former is impossible, then the latter is inevitable.

Recognising this allows the debate to be reframed in more meaningful ways that foster decision-making under uncertainty. There is no true failsafe option. Furthermore, ‘following the science’ is not always possible or even meaningful when the underlying evidence cannot provide definitive answers. Decisions still need to be made, which requires learning in real-time, both from other countries and using evidence from the ground in the UK."

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 16/05/2020 09:42

Just had a fb debate with a dementor, have come back here to reset my stress levels!!

People need to get a fucking grip!!!

Orangeblossom78 · 16/05/2020 09:43

What about Coastguards I wonder

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 16/05/2020 09:44

Morning all, I just started a thread on travel as I just noticed that Efteling (a theme park in Holland) is re opening this week. They have a video on how they are going to do it safely. We have a mini break booked for August there (if you’ve never been, I’d recommend it - so cute and such good value compared to Disney), wonder if we will be allowed out of uk? I have a bit of hope left.
Posted an anti dementor thing on facebook yesterday but then chickened out and deleted it. What a coward.

Spudlet · 16/05/2020 09:46

@TrustTheGeneGenie I used to practice yoga every day and I still try to do a couple of sessions a week, and I still find kids yoga a bit of a challenge! I think it’s because it moves so fast and gets going immediately... no gentle warm-up, just grab your foot and hold it to your ear like it’s a phone ShockGrin

Bollss · 16/05/2020 09:48

Haha yes @spudlet it was much more fast moving than I had anticipated! I am not as bendy as I once was let me tell you! Grin

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 16/05/2020 09:49

I've just rejoined Mumsnet to say thank you for this thread. I was beginning to think I was alone worrying about children's mental health and safeguarding and then I found you.

I've been accused of wanting to kill people on Twitter. Of course I don't. I want to protect people like my parents, but my child needs to play with her friends and I would sacrifice a lot to enable her to do that including my own social life. Keep me away from others, but let my child play. Is that so unreasonable? I'm in Wales and no-one seems to want the schools to reopen ever!

Drivingdownthe101 · 16/05/2020 09:50

TrustTheGeneGenie I sit and watch while mine do the yoga Grin. Looks exhausting!
Luckily mine (6 and 4) love a walk/scoot/bike ride. In fact in reckon lockdown has increased their stamina as I can’t bear to sit at home all day and it’s the only real excuse I have to get out! They still ask every single day if they can go on the playground though.

DominaShantotto · 16/05/2020 09:52

I’m now reporting posts trying to bully parents into not making an informed choice based on their circumstances as not being in the spirit of the site and every one of the personal attacks made by the mn teachers against posters who dare mention their own particular child’s school has been shit and not provided work or support. There are some shocking ones out there.

Let’s reclaim the site - after I go to costa

MrsWombat · 16/05/2020 09:52

I'm not sure if I've found my people as I politely disagree with some of you on certain things, but I'm sending my kids back to school on June 1st because I think it's the right time to start. I've also attached a photo of my personal philosophy on this whole situation.
