How do you pronounce quark?

When I did physics in college, it was pronounced it to rhyme with park but apparently quark cheese rhymes with cork.

Only read about it and I have never eaten quark myself.

I would say it like a posh duck. Quarrrk.

bluefoxmug · 15/05/2020 15:33

Brevityisthesoulofwit · 15/05/2020 15:38

Exactly like your post OP. Subatomic particle rhymes with park, manky cheese rhymes with cork.

amusedbush · 15/05/2020 15:42

I say it to rhyme with cork.

I say both to rhyme with park, but the particle starts "kw" and the cheese starts "kv"

BeetrootRocks · 15/05/2020 15:45

It rhymed with park in the 90s in the UK when I was at uni.

BarbaraofSeville · 15/05/2020 15:45

I said both the particle and the cheese to rhyme with park, but is the cheese name a German word which obviously could affect the pronounciation.

Soubriquet · 15/05/2020 15:47

Posh duck here! Smile

BeetrootRocks · 15/05/2020 15:50

Quark in star trek rhymed with cork.

Just to throw the cat amongst the pigeons.

Bagelsandbrie · 15/05/2020 15:51

Posh duck.

Don’t see how it can rhyme with cork as there’s no “ork” in it..!

elQuintoConyo · 15/05/2020 15:51

Like a Belfast duck.

MrsWooster · 15/05/2020 15:55

Then why is Quorn?!?

toastofthetown · 15/05/2020 15:55

Quark (as in the elementary particle) was said to rhyme with park when I was at university. I guess I would pronounce the cheese the same way. I’ve never had any reason to say it.

FrogFairy · 15/05/2020 15:56

Anyone want to admit that they used to pronounce quinoa to rhyme with lawn mower?

I did Blush

FrogFairy · 15/05/2020 15:57

Forgot to say, quark rhymes with cork for me.

SunKissed89 · 15/05/2020 16:00

Scottish accent here...rhymes with cork, fork and stork for me

BeyondDreamsOfBeyondFourWalls · 15/05/2020 16:01

The cheese - posh duck
The particle - rhymes with cork

ExpletiveDelighted · 15/05/2020 16:17

Both rhyme with park

Wibu123 · 15/05/2020 16:25

We say kvark because of German heritage and I'd never even realised it would be said differently!

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 15/05/2020 16:31

I have never said the word (obviously I’m a pleb). But if I had, I’d have gone for posh duck.

How do you pronounce quinoa? I’ve never had to say that either (see earlier comment about my plebianess).

BrotherlyLove · 15/05/2020 16:34

Keen-wah

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 15/05/2020 16:36

Thank you. I deserved to pronounce it incorrectly at some embarrassing moment, as I never told a university flatmate that he was mispronouncing hyperbole - a word he was quite fond of. In my defence he was a young Conservative.

notimagain · 15/05/2020 16:38

Uni, 70's, AFN it rhymed with Mark.., since it derives from Finnegan's Wake...

"Three quarks for Muster Mark!
Sure he hasn't got much of a bark
And sure any he has it's all beside the mark.
