How do you pronounce quark?

When I did physics in college, it was pronounced it to rhyme with park but apparently quark cheese rhymes with cork.

Only read about it and I have never eaten quark myself.

There's a joke that goes 'what's a frog's favourite type of cheese? Quaaaaaarrrrrk.' Because in German that's what a frog says.

ItchyScratch · 15/05/2020 16:55

Qwork like walk

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 15/05/2020 16:55

Quark cheese does not rhyme with cork. It rhymes with Mark. Unless every German I've ever heard say it is pronouncing it Incorrectly.

Blueuggboots · 15/05/2020 16:56

It's quark. Like ark.
and disgusting

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 15/05/2020 21:55

@Blueuggboots it's gorgeous on toast with jam!

Blueuggboots · 15/05/2020 22:15

@Rockingmyfiftiesnot 🤮🤮🤮 jam on toast is also vile. Quark world just tip it into hell on Earth.....

ExpletiveDelighted · 15/05/2020 22:16

Totally agree Blue, jam on toast is rank, quark could only make it worse.

Rhodri · 15/05/2020 22:21

Murray Gell-Mann, who named the sub-atomic particle, said it was pronounced to rhyme with Quart. Most people pronounce it to rhyme with Mark, but the correct pronunciation is widely known even though people don’t use it.

zombielady · 15/05/2020 22:22

Quark strangeness and charm. Listen to hawkwind Grin

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 16/05/2020 08:35

Jam and Quark on toast is like having cheesecake for breakfast

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 16/05/2020 08:46

In German - the science thingy is pronounced English (because science) and the food is pronounced with an open 'a' - I used the word a couple of minutes ago while discussing cheesecake recipes (DM's vs DMIL's).

Blueuggboots · 16/05/2020 16:01

@Expletivedeleted jam only lives on scones. Nothing else!

Blueuggboots · 16/05/2020 16:02

Oh sorry @Expletivedelighted!!

ExpletiveDelighted · 16/05/2020 16:16

Grin it is also permitted in a Victoria Sandwich.

ExpletiveDelighted · 16/05/2020 16:16

jam that is, not quark

ItsGoingTibiaK · 16/05/2020 16:21

Really interesting piece about it here:

phonetic-blog.blogspot.com/2011/02/quarks.html?m=1

I have a physics degree and I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who pronounced it as kwork.

NameChange84 · 16/05/2020 16:23

I say “Kwahk” but I know it’s supposed to be “Qwork”

RunningNinja79 · 16/05/2020 16:31

Rhymes with cork

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 16/05/2020 23:50

I lived in Germany for almost 2 years and have visited many times and many regions. I have never heard a German say 'Quork', only ever "Qwark "
