Does anyone recognise this type of nest? I’ve watched it being built for a few weeks now, and can hear babies, but I’ve never seen the bird that built it!

Very interesting thread.
I live near the woods so get lots of birds. I sure that what I'd been calling crow or blackbird could be a jackdaw and will be looking at the back of the head next time to see if there is some silveryness

If they’re baby jackdaws they won’t be sweetly cheeping for much longer. Noisy creatures.

We've a jackdaw in our chimney breast. It's filled it with sticks. We will remove it after the babies fly the nest, fit a new cowl and next year the little bastards will rip the cowl off and do the same thing again.

Sounds like a definite Jackdaws (and not rats phew!), thanks everyone! I might try and get a mini camera to put in/near the nest to see. I can’t believe how much mess they’ve made! I’ll seal the window once they’ve left to avoid a repeat next year!

Glad it's not rats!

Definitely jackdaws. My parents have them, the babies really are the bird version of the shrieking toddler at Tesco once they get old enough. Lovely, clever birds though
