Anyone know what bird builds this nest?

Does anyone recognise this type of nest? I’ve watched it being built for a few weeks now, and can hear babies, but I’ve never seen the bird that built it!

Anyone know what bird builds this nest?

This has freaked me out but I have to know what it is !! It can’t be a rat if you can hear them chirping ?
Is there any signs of poo anywhere ?

needanewusernameplz · 13/05/2020 16:31

Looks like the blair witch project! I don't think you want to find out what made that. Suggest a pest control person or an exorcist.

Pinkyyy · 13/05/2020 16:34

Bloody hell that's huge. Very intrigued to know what it is!

9 foot nest!!! Shock

Jeez I'm not sleeping properly at the moment as it is Grin

I'm wondering if it's an owl?

pinksmileysticker · 13/05/2020 16:35

As someone has already asked, what noise are the babies making? And how do you know there are babies? Jackdaws will build upon existing nests of the same species and as already stated, whole chimney flues can be filled with jackdaw next material. We pulled out six bin bags of the stuff.

pinksmileysticker · 13/05/2020 16:36

Best material, not next material Smile

pinksmileysticker · 13/05/2020 16:37

Ffs NEST!! We need editing abilities! Wink

Soubriquet · 13/05/2020 16:38

I know what you need to do!!

You need to buy a motion activated camera, set it up in the building aimed at the hole, and see if it captures what comes in!

JoesExotic · 13/05/2020 16:38

Whatever it is now owns your house.

Back away quietly.

grannydingle · 13/05/2020 16:38

Bloody huge!! I seem to recognise the style of next building but can't for the life of me think of what it was!!!

Wanderlust21 · 13/05/2020 16:41

Mice make chirping noises like birds as babies.

I've only ever caught mice in traps when I've put the trap in a doorway (leave the door open an couple if inch and put the trap on one side just inside).

So I'd imagine rats are just as wary of traps.

GingerFigs · 13/05/2020 16:45

I don't think it's rats. If it was, your chickens would be nervous (if I read it properly that they're in the same building). Rats don't tend to build nests out of sticks, not in my experience but happy if someone doesn't agree (they just tend to hole up in things and chew everything and anything in sight and add it to their nest).

I think corvid family too as they look pretty big sticks. Is the noise the babies are making cheeping? Rats wouldn't be cheeping....

huntinthehornybacktoad · 13/05/2020 16:46

that's not mice, that's sheep

Haggisfish · 13/05/2020 16:48

I agree corvid or owl maybe?! Or ostrich?!Grin

Ouchjuststoodonlego · 13/05/2020 16:48

Jackdaw seems likely. If you Google pictures some of them are enormous.

Nighting · 13/05/2020 16:51

It's a jackdaw's nest. The pile of sticks I cleared out of my chimney before I had it capped was about that big.

GingerFigs · 13/05/2020 16:51

@Haggisfish ostrichGrin It's about the right size!!!

Soubriquet · 13/05/2020 16:55

Looks like jackdaw is the winner

Google images show several fireplaces full of nests looking like your picture where the nest has come down

HMSSophie · 13/05/2020 16:56

Is it a squirrels dray? HNRTFT

DartmoorChef · 13/05/2020 16:56

If there are chicks in the nest you would normally ger the parents flying in and out all day long with food.

wonkylegs · 13/05/2020 16:57

I was going to say jackdaw
We've had some in a outbuilding and one down the chimneys before we capped them - huge!

TheQueensWave · 13/05/2020 16:57

I’ve googled jackdaws and we do have them (I thought they were crows!) in the trees? Hopefully that rather than rats! I love the idea of owls or eagles though! The doors get shut so the entry is the small window at the top, probably not big enough for owl or eagle?
It’s hard to explain, but it just sounds like baby bird cheeping? Like you hear in birds nests?
The traps are baited with normal meat, we didn’t want to risk poison so close to the chickens (who can’t get to the trap)

Wanderlust21 · 13/05/2020 16:58

Magpies maybe?

weepingwillow22 · 13/05/2020 16:58

Yes, I would agree with Jackdaw looking at this

Vicbarbarkley · 13/05/2020 16:59

That is a Jackdaw nest.
100% certain. They are brilliant birds, so intelligent 😁
