Dh is spending a fortune on the weekly shop !!!!

It's always been DHs job to do the big shop as he says I'm shit at it and he knows what we need as he does all the cooking
But since lockdown he is going crazy . He's spending between £200-300 every week
There's only us and a small baby
I'm about to go onto statutory maternity pay soon!
Anyone else spending a lot more since lockdown ?

I should add, I meal plan carefully and always have done.

perfectstorm · 13/05/2020 14:55

I'd suggest that alcohol is paid for from personal spends, tbh, OP. That's how DH and I do it, unless wine is for a special meal or something. He drinks far more than I do (not to any worrying extent, but I hardly drink at all for medical reasons) so neither of us think it fair that it comes from the family budget.

It might also concentrate his mind on his drinking if the money for it can't be disguised with the carrots.

And meal planning, as has been said. I think all of us are a bit overwhelmed by mild sense of panic, sheltering in place, imminent Armageddon, etc, still. I know I have to rein in the Laura Ingalls Wilder sense that we need a cellar full of food, and we have no cellar and I'm the least prepper person imaginable, normally! So anyone with tendencies towards panic buying is going to have a struggle.

GameSetMatch · 13/05/2020 14:57

Oh I forgot to say that’s for two adults and a 5 year old and 2 year old, both toilet trained so no nappy’s

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 13/05/2020 14:57

£200-£300 quid a week in Lidl?

Seriously!?! That's about 4 trolley loads.

What is he actually buying? Is it purely booze or has he got some secret gambling habit that he's blaming on the shopping?

Serious question because I cannot fathom how you can spend that much in those shops each week (I shop in Lidl too, hence being so mystified).

Kraejka · 13/05/2020 14:59

Have you seen any of the receipts?
How much booze is he buying and is he buying stuff from the middle aisles?
It's pretty good going to spend 200 - 300 quid at Aldi or Lidl.
I end it with more than I can fit in the boot of my car for 100 quid and it lasts for nearly a month (I'm single admittedly) but still... you get a hell of a lot for 100 pounds.

sixnearlyseven · 13/05/2020 15:00

We have been spending 250 weekly but we have 6 kids at home!

JudyCoolibar · 13/05/2020 15:00

I'm spending more when we go shopping but am finding that, with careful planning, I don't need to go more than around once in 10 days. However, fortunately I don't have to buy nappies etc.

Nanny0gg · 13/05/2020 15:03

A) Why don't you have a couple of weeks of eating your way through the freezer (it needs defrosting, doesn't it?) then you only have to buy fresh veg, milk and bread

B) The drinking is clearly an issue and you've got a baby on the way. How are you going to address that?

C) How is your mat leave going to be financed?

threecatsownme · 13/05/2020 15:05

Family of 4
2 adults, 12 yr old constant snacker and 6yr old.

110 weekly in supermarket
70 every 2weeks butchers

Including alcohol and 3 cats food

But I'm not buying lunches out at work or paying petrol or parking. So I think probably in my favour.

Elmerrrrrrrr · 13/05/2020 15:20

We spend about £150 a week for two adults and one toddler

userxx · 13/05/2020 15:32

Booze. No one can spend that amount in Lidl or Aldi without an almighty booze run. I do the same!

Gingerkittykat · 13/05/2020 15:43

It's impossible to judge by until people know how much is booze and how much other foods.

You said you have one gin a night, how much does that cost on its own?

You need to inventory what is in the house already. It is another member of my household who is overbuying and it is driving me crazy. It is a case of freezer tetris, cupboards full to bursting and overflow in the hall and a 48pack of cat food and huge pack of Pepsi max in the boot of the cat because they can't come inside!

I've needed to take control a bit, we don't need 20 packets of savoury rice plus a big bag of basmati plus about 1k of long grain in the cupboard. That has involved inventorying everything, banning them buying anymore of certain items and making plans to use things up.

sqirrelfriends · 13/05/2020 15:52

DH manages to spend 150 every week at Aldi for two adults and a toddler. That does include booze but not a lot. A trip down the middle isle does sometimes cost a small fortune though.

Blankiefan · 13/05/2020 15:55

We're spending a similar amount for me, DH and 6yo DD. There's probably about £30 of booze in there. And often pick up non food stuff like new clothes for DD and/or household stuff like batteries. Also, way too many snacks. About 60% of my shopping is from tesco and the rest from M&S.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 13/05/2020 15:59

I spend about £220-£250 a week on shopping at Waitrose, shopping for 3 adults. I’m not buying alcohol or ready meals in that but I do spend a good portion of it on meat and fish. I also buy cleaning products & toiletries which add up. I buy some brands but my trolley is largely Waitrose own products as I find they taste the same or better. It’s very easy to spend that amount on a not hugely extravagant shop, ime.

SheSheHe · 13/05/2020 15:59

We’re definitely spending loads more. Lots more alcohol and shopping in Waitrose a lot because It’s well organised, better stocked and less busy than the Aldi we normally go to. Also buying stuff like plants and compost and pots and random shite so we can enjoy our small garden. Oh and we’re getting milk and eggs delivered now which is more expensive and we’ll probably cancel when lockdown ends.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 13/05/2020 16:04

We do drink. Our booze comes from the wine merchant (better value to buy by the case and more choice than supermarket) and local small specialist seller and online (DH loves obscure craft beer).

imsooverthisdrama · 13/05/2020 16:07

I think it's gone up I'm spending £90 + a week before lockdown it was £60+ but no top up shops and thats including meat / alcohol all the essentials etc .
That's 3 adults and 1 teen & 1 cat .
I was surprised my shop was £93 today in Lidl but I've filled my chest freezer and fridge freezer I shouldn't need anything till after the weekend and that should only be milk or cat food .

Needtheadvice · 13/05/2020 16:08

We spend roughly 70-80 a week and that is everything! 2 adults one child.

fussychica · 13/05/2020 16:30

Gosh what is he buying? I've always spent a lot on food as we don't eat out so I like nice stuff but I've never spent that on a weekly shop, even buying wine and gin! I do most of my shopping in Waitrose too as its my nearest supermarket.

minipie · 13/05/2020 16:31

Does he cook from scratch or is he buying loads of pre prepared stuff?

TheMotherofAllDilemmas · 13/05/2020 16:34

He just needs to be more responsible with money, especially in these times, you may need the money he is wasting to make up for possible income loses and keep finances healthy during your maternity leave.

It doesn’t have to be a Coronavirus problem, some people just don’t have any control on how they spend the money.

emz771 · 13/05/2020 16:36

To be honest I think every everybody is spending more in lockdown. We spent £400 pounds last week - and that was no booze. But there is 6 of us!

I think a lot of people are just making more out of mealtimes.

SunshineCake · 13/05/2020 16:36

*@peony68 it isn't daft, it is common sense. I write my list in sections as well as the order in the shop.

Fruit and veg. Fridge. Cupboard.

Non food. Freezer.

Makes perfect sense!

TheSheepofWallSt · 13/05/2020 16:36

It’s expensive at the minute.

It’s just me and 3yo DS, (who eats an extraordinary amount of fruit and veg).

Just spent £120 for a weeks shop with Ocado, £20 of that was alcohol, probably £20 on treat items, but the rest was fruit, veg, meat and staples. And I know I’ll need to do a shop again in a week.
