It's always been DHs job to do the big shop as he says I'm shit at it and he knows what we need as he does all the cooking
But since lockdown he is going crazy . He's spending between £200-300 every week
There's only us and a small baby
I'm about to go onto statutory maternity pay soon!
Anyone else spending a lot more since lockdown ?

Dh doing the shopping here and without my guidance in the shop we're probably spending about £200Plus a week.

He refuses to go to separate supermarkets to shop around, he will go in to another one if there's something specific I've asked for though.

RandomMess · 13/05/2020 12:49

That is ridiculous!!!

Yes food prices have gone up but it sounds like he has an alcohol problem unless he is buying premium ready meals for every lunch and evening meal.

Can you look at the receipts?

Apolloanddaphne · 13/05/2020 12:49

We are spending more but I would say £160 per week rather than £100. There are three adults in my home and now here for all meals whereas DH and DD used to eat a lot of meals at work before. I also think things seem more expensive - fewer deals.

MsChatterbox · 13/05/2020 12:50

That is a lot! We are spending a lot more now. Usually about £85 a week. But this is because we are buying everything from our weekly shop now like makeup, a frying pan, Suncream. There's always been something extra we've needed each week. But we're also not doing any top up shops so I think it's actually balancing out!

xyzandabc · 13/05/2020 12:50

I'm spending around £150/160 every 10-12 days. That's 2 adults 3 children (8, 11, 13).

About £90 in Aldi, £50 Waitrose, £10/20 elsewhere.

Granted we don't really drink alcohol or have pets which would bump it up.

What on earth is he buying that's costing that much?

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 13/05/2020 12:51

My £120 in Lidl yesterday was seven whole dinners for five including meat and fish, cereal, bread, milk, treats plus three bottles of wine and a bottle of rum.

He must be buying A LOT.

Sexnotgender · 13/05/2020 12:51

And I’ll say it’s increased primarily because I’d usually shop in Lidl but we’re shielding so having to get deliveries.

My last Waitrose shop on Monday was £123 and that included 3 nice bottles of wine 😂

Egghead68 · 13/05/2020 12:51

I’m spending loads, partly because I’m getting deliveries (shielding) so can’t pick up reduced food, partly because I am doing much more cookery which needs expensive spices etc. and partly because I am just treating myself to get through the situation (don’t have anything else to spend money on after all).

ShirleyPhallus · 13/05/2020 12:51

We are spending about £150 per shop, but that could be weekly / every other depending on when we can get the slot. That includes alcohol and decent meat, 2 of us and a baby.

The one week DH went in to a food shop it was about £300, think he was overly excited at being allowed out somewhere so brought back all manner of shit including a swing ball set.

WitchWife · 13/05/2020 12:51

Good point MissChatterbox - I thought I was spending a lot more, but then remembered I'd bought stuff I would never normally buy at the supermarket like shoes and a jumper!

FAQs · 13/05/2020 12:55

If it Lidl and Aldi is he coming back with a canoe, chain saw and a pink unicorn from the middle aisles alongside the shopping.

Comps83 · 13/05/2020 12:56

As pp said I think it maybe is excitement of being let out the house
And admittedly he drinks far far too much
It will have to stop soon as we won't have the money to do it

A food shop has become more expensive since confinement started (I'm abroad).

To stop people from shopping too frequently and to create more space in the shop for social distancing, they seem to be selling only the larger quantities. e.g. 1kg of minced beef whereas before you could also buy 300g or 500g. Also I've noticed that some brands aren't available, e.g. you have to buy Heinz ketchup instead of a cheaper brand.

Secondly I've bought booze at the supermarket, which I don't do otherwise as I go out for a drink once a week or so in a bar with friends. I've bought "treats" too like the odd bar of chocolate or ingredients to bake a cake, which I don't do usually.

Thirdly, I buy things like shampoo, face masks, candles in the supermarket as the other shops where I'd buy those things are closed.

Also more money on cleaning products, I wouldn't say I've 'gone mad' but am certainly using more of them - part of that is from being home more often. (Has anyone else noticed the toilet roll getting used up much faster as you are never going to the toilet outside the house nowadays?)

Another thing is that I do like to have a few staples in the house, more than before, so I am adding an extra tin or two of chickpeas, lentils, tomatoes, tuna, etc. to my fortnightly shop.

However, as other posters have said, quite a few of these additional costs are offset by spending nothing on eating or drinking out (or transport to get to and from bars and restaurants), nothing on clothes, and less on things like make-up, books...

OP, are you eating all of the food that your DP buys? If you are having to throw away food (or stockpiling excessive amounts of dried or frozen food), then yes he is buying too much.

ZsaZsaMc · 13/05/2020 12:58

We are spending £150 a week for two of us and a toddler - includes all food, some alcohol and toiletries.

It’s definitely more than we used to but all of us are in the house constantly at the moment and things are more expensive. We have one online a week.

I’ve been trying to cut it down but we like food!

Maybelatte · 13/05/2020 12:58

Not sure how he’s managing this, especially in Aldi! He must be buying the whole bloody shop. We spend about £200 for a fortnights worth but that covers four children and two adults.

Rockbird · 13/05/2020 13:00

Blimey. Ours is coming in at about £110 per week from Tesco and I thought that was extortionate. How is he physically managing to buy that much stuff?? That's a huge amount!

I spent over £100 in lidl...i got an absolute shit ton of food...£300 is ridiculous for two adults and a baby

fascinated · 13/05/2020 13:05

I would never count alcohol in the total.

Firstimemam · 13/05/2020 13:05

How much??? We spend about £80-£100 but I do buy everything organic but barely any meat. Same household size.

Yurona · 13/05/2020 13:06

We spend about £150 per week (2 adults, 2 kids), home and personal care stuff included. Things have gotten a lot more expensive!

Enko · 13/05/2020 13:08

we are spending more yes, However, there is 6 of us youngest 16 and I am not spending that much a week. (SO gonna show DH this so he can see I am NOT the unreasonable one Grin )

RandomMess · 13/05/2020 13:08

@Comps83 you really need to observe his alcohol consumption, it sounds like he is a functioning alcoholic...

carolebaskin666 · 13/05/2020 13:10

I am spending so much more.

Shopping at a more expensive store, (to get delivery)

No offers are on.
Buying more branded items.
Having lunch and dinner at home - more meal planning.

ILikeYouToo · 13/05/2020 13:12

It's around £150 a week now for our family of 5 + cat. How does he even fit that amount in a trolley? I go to Lidl and Aldi and at the point of having spent £120+ things are literally falling out of the trolley. Unless it's literally lined with just booze I'm not sure how you'd get that amount of stuff in!
