It's always been DHs job to do the big shop as he says I'm shit at it and he knows what we need as he does all the cooking
But since lockdown he is going crazy . He's spending between £200-300 every week
There's only us and a small baby
I'm about to go onto statutory maternity pay soon!
Anyone else spending a lot more since lockdown ?

You could be over paying on your mortgage (if you have one) or paying off debts with those amounts.

Time to do a full financial & food stock inventory of your home & start taking control. Set up food deliveries if you can or take it in turns to go shopping, you need to put your big girl pants on.

Sushiroller · 21/05/2020 11:06

I really don't get this.
We are two adult and dp eats like a horse.
We shop in Waitrose and buy all the naice stuff and it's £70-100pw

Unless he is buying everything in the aisle of mystery and has a drinking problem i have no clue how he is spending that weekly in Aldi

Daphnesmate01 · 08/08/2020 13:42

Just spotted this and have to agree I am spending far more (a similar amount to op). But, there are 5 of us and the dcs have not been eating at school so buying extra for lunches. I have stocked up a bit and we are not eating out. Plus, recently, I have been buying almost everything from the supermarket (birthday gifts and forward planning to Christmas). I want to bring our spend down to below £200 but a pack of nappies (soon won't need) and a bottle of wine (though not expensive one), soon bumps it up. We have also been growing a bit more - tomatoes and cucumber and carrots which is both satisfying and money saving (although initial outlay of grow bags etc.)

I thought it was just me but glad to see it isn't.

Marmite27 · 08/08/2020 13:47

Bloody hell, in Aldi and Lidl he must be buying an enormous amount of food.

I did £60 in Aldi and £70 in Asda yesterday. We can’t get unsmoked gammon in our Asda so I went to the one a bit further away. DH text to say we all needed vitamins, so £27 of the £30 over spend was £10 worth of ham and £17 on vitamins!

We usually spend around £100.

rebecca102 · 08/08/2020 13:54

We are the same. But I do the shop. It lasts just over a week. I don't even buy the expensive stuff. It's us and our toddler. It's the meat that's expensive

BertiesLanding · 08/08/2020 13:55

Doesn't sound like a grocery problem as much as an alcohol problem, OP.

GlamGiraffe · 08/08/2020 14:10

How much do you normally spend on lunches, coffees etc and snacks during the days times onvl work days and weekend days out? How much on evening drinks and meals out?
How much in boots etc to cover shampoo and that type of thing.
Look at your old bank statements. Tot it all ip. Loom how much was spent in those shops plus cash withdrawals that would gave been spent on those things and add it to your old weekly shop Bill's. You'll see how it compares. You will be able to tell if its a new thing or not. You can then assess your overall spending.
It's perfectly possible to be spending £8 in lunch alone in Pret plus a coffee or two each day. You could be spending £60 on weekday lunches plus evening drinks of goodness knows how much depending how much of a drinker you are for one person alone. Add a meal out for a family at £60 and you're halfway to your new shopping bill already. He could of course be a big kid in the proverbial sweetshop !

IntermittentParps · 08/08/2020 14:28

he says I'm shit at it I can't quite get past this.

kerfuffling · 08/08/2020 14:30

Food, toiletries etc for you all should be under £100 a week if he's shopping at Aldi or Lidl. That means he must be spending between £100-£200 a week on booze.

He has a serious problem.

Rebelwithallthecause · 08/08/2020 14:30

We are spending more as we aren’t eating lunches and dinners out or getting as many takeaways but for family of 4 I try and keep it around £100.

It’s not easy though.

It does include some alcohol and all cleanings bits though.

If I left DH to do it the bill would be far higher. He sees the weekly food shop as a treat and the only treat we get now but like you OP just going onto statutory maternity pay means we just can’t

PerspicaciaTick · 08/08/2020 14:33

If he could cut the spend by £100 (and still be spending shedloads) you could save the money for a fabulous holiday post lockdown.

Augustseemsbetter · 08/08/2020 14:36

We are spending less than that for 4 and not Aldi / Lidl where we would come in cheaper again. Very odd for discount stores. And not just some extra veg and normal alcohol quantities.

It's difficult if he thinks it's justified though. Puzzling really.

Allthepinkunicorns · 08/08/2020 14:38

He is seriously overspending if he is shopping in Aldi. We are a family of 3 and I do a monthly big shop there and spend about £150 that's including cleaning products and some alcohol. I then get a fortnightly fruit and veg box which is about £35 and I get a few bits of meat from the butchers for the month and thats another £20. So our monthly spend is less than one of your weekly spends. Have you looked at one of the receipts to see what he's actually spending the money on?
Is he buying other things such as garden furniture or the other random things they sell.

WrongKindOfFace · 08/08/2020 14:41

@Comps83

He reckons everything is available in the shops now It's Lidl and aldi etc
Lidl or Aldi? You could buy the entire shop for £200.
WrongKindOfFace · 08/08/2020 14:43

Ah, I totally missed the booze post. It’s not a shopping issue, it’s a dh with a drink issue then.

Augustseemsbetter · 08/08/2020 14:45

Daphnesmate you have 4 people though in addition to the one in nappies.

Op has 2.Confused

Augustseemsbetter · 08/08/2020 14:46

Even the alcohol is quite reasonable in Aldi. I go in for it at Christmas!

Lady1576 · 08/08/2020 14:47

Sorry OP but this has actually made me feel a bit better! We’re also just the two of us and a baby and as I read your post, I thought my husband might have posted about me. I’ve been spending £70-100 a week at Lidl and have been feeling bad about it. Not just because of the money but also because that is so much food. I never used to do a big shop, I would buy some things for the next couple of days, then some nice fresh veg next time I was out etc. I think it’s the feeling that you won’t be coming back soon and have to get everything you need or you’ll be without. It’s probably also being at home you make proper meals twice a day and no canteen or sandwiches at lunch. Also I probably spent more in total before but didn’t notice it. I’ve started meal planning more thoroughly so that at least I know that what I’m buying is for a specific meal. Still no chance of getting to £200-300 but I don’t buy any wine or red meat so as pp have said, it could be that.

Augustseemsbetter · 08/08/2020 15:01

I think you would do best look through the receipts together when you are both feeling calm and not looking for arguments .

He has to see it and accept it himself.

Daphnesmate01 · 08/08/2020 15:24

I never used to do a big shop, I would buy some things for the next couple of days, then some nice fresh veg next time I was out etc.

This too. Perhaps it all adds up.

Yes August, this is true there are more of us. I have to admit to buying a lot of organic produce including meat, we don't currently shop in Lidl or Aldi (and not Waitrose).
