I think I finished the last thread by accident...

Whitby is really narrow with loads of bottlenecks. There's no prom as such. It's not your typical seaside town. The council have posted on Facebook saying no carparks will be open and don't come.
I think it could be a frustrating, disappointing visit.

TheGreatWave · 12/05/2020 22:20

Desmond - It is an old town with winding narrow streets - there is a bridge which is a nightmare at the best of times as the pavements are really narrow so you are literally brushing against people all the time. The bridge also needs to open from time to time so then you get a build up of people on either side of the bridge.

The main beach is separate from the town area, so the little bits of beach accessible from the town area can get a little bit busy at times. They have also reportedly closed the parking and the loos - most of the on street parking is residents only.

It is a lovely part of the country, but one part that can perhaps wait a little longer.

Bluebelltulip · 12/05/2020 22:22

LilacTree can't be side to side apparently if you talk to someone else. If you have to be face to face even over 2m apart then you will spray them.

Drivingdownthe101 · 12/05/2020 22:23

Apparently lilac if you’re pushing a pushchair and are side by side with a person, that person then isn’t side by side with the pushchair, but diagonal to the pushchair.

SunlightBaby · 12/05/2020 22:23

Interesting about prams v slings. I will need to take the baby with me when dropping off DD at school (if reopening goes ahead from 1st June). Maybe I will take the sling just to avoid being judged Confused

LilacTree1 · 12/05/2020 22:24

Bluebell - on that basis I think theatre and cinema should open now.

DesmondTheMoonbear · 12/05/2020 22:24

TheGreatWave Thank you for explaining.

DesmondTheMoonbear · 12/05/2020 22:25

And thank you ThisDressNeedsPockets

I know Whitby very well. I wouldn't go there under current circumstances myself (because surely the point is shops/cafes/ridiculous Dracula attraction/Hand of Glory etc) but the Whitby op wants to go to the beach which does not involve going through the old town or over the bridge.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 12/05/2020 22:34

I’m struggling tonight. My cat is off his food and struggling to eat his treats (I may have spoken to soon about the vet @Biscuitbiscuits) and I’m worried there’s something wrong with his mouth again. I’d worry anyway but everything seems 1000 times worse at the moment. I keep worrying about the logistics of a vet visit and I’ve even got to the point of worrying about what happens if he has to be PTS.

My logical self says stop overreacting but I’m struggling to cope with with work, I’m getting fatter and fatter and now this.

Sorry for being on a downer tonight

fartingsparkles · 12/05/2020 22:35

Oh my word! I am astonished. Someone on my fb is a dementor (normally rational and due a condition may be shielding so semi understandable) put up a post to which someone has replied that until there are no more reported cases for a month and everyone who has it is getting better we shouldn't go out. This person qualified their comment by saying they had pneumonia and it took 2 months to recover so they don't want to take the chance of going out 'for a long time'. People are agreeing with this!

Ok, so because you have been/are ill, me and my kids have to stay in for who knows how long! (and that's before we get to the 'science' of no reported cases). Sorry but no. If you want to stay in, I have no issues with that. But, a 'blanket ban', no way.

Mascotte · 12/05/2020 22:35

Oh, @Pinksparklypussycat it seems to have been a bad day all round 💕

Willitneverend · 12/05/2020 22:35

I love Whitby. It's too long a drive for us for a day trip though. I'm sure the local chip shops at seaside towns will be happy for a bit of extra trade, assuming everyone can space out to eat outside.

Thisdressneedspockets · 12/05/2020 22:37

The thing is, there's a post claiming to quote the mp for Whitby and Scarborough, saying people are not welcome. The quote is quite aggressive in tone, which is like a red rag to a bull and seems to have provoked people to want to go, if Facebook is to be believed. I'm curious to see how it unfolds, but would prefer going to a beach where distancing is possible..

LilacTree1 · 12/05/2020 22:38

“ This person qualified their comment by saying they had pneumonia and it took 2 months to recover so they don't want to take the chance of going out 'for a long time'

My recovery time was about that, bit longer. Oddly enough, it didn’t occur to me to expect people to stop going out!

Drivingdownthe101 · 12/05/2020 22:41

I can’t cope with school dementors any more. They’re wrecking my head!

LilacTree1 · 12/05/2020 22:44

I skimmed the Denmark thread

There are some posters dementing there who I thought were more intelligent.

TinRoofRusty · 12/05/2020 22:48

Domina Flowers. My older teen son has HFA (he also has ADHD and OCD which the NHS utterly failed to diagnose, much less treat). He chose to attend boarding school suited to his needs near my parents and sister (she has adult children) and at this time I am so glad. He is at my sister's now and doing okay (what really helps is they have a massive house and garden with a huge swimming pool and two lovely dogs who are great companions) AND he is properly medicated. If we were here I'd be suicidal. Even so his routine has been disrupted but thanks to all the support that is still being provided his education is not (he has much above average intelligence). Not able to see him, though, which is VERY hard. Was supposed to go at Easter, hoping for July despite Dementors.

Golden is so right. My other teen daughter who is NT and very resilient (her sister died when she was 6) is really starting to struggle with this and getting resentful about it, quite rightly. Still, as she said, 'What about OUR futures? Our education?' as some of her friends have had their exams and therefore their uni admissions fucked. Dementor response is that she WILL die, but the vast majority of teens and children do not and as she says, did not my sister die from a supposedly rare cancer? So should I never drive a car, X (a girl at their school) died last year up the road in her car? Why do the adults have no perspective about this?

I have to admit she has a point.

jakeyboy1 · 12/05/2020 22:49

Fed up of people saying "LIFE WILL NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN" only enhanced by those that say "I have reassessed my life and it is much better now" oh do fuck off it must have been shit before then, I quite liked mine.

fartingsparkles · 12/05/2020 22:54

@Lilac because you are sane I would guess. And she called people 'selfish and ignorant about this virus'.

I do wonder about these people. As was mentioned re hugging, I imagine they have their partners with them. They get to have normal conversations with them, and a bit of a laugh and a joke about what they're watching/doing. Guess what, I don't. Same for many on this thread. I lost my partner to fucking cancer in our early 40s. I have no parents or siblings, and in laws are generally vulnerable for various reasons. I haven't had anything like physical contact with anyone apart from my 2 small dcs for 8 fucking weeks. Anyone who wants to call me selfish and ignorant can rearrange this well known phrase "to fuck get"

Apologies but this has really pissed me off

BillywilliamV · 12/05/2020 22:54

Regarding the pram versus sling debacle. From what I can see the old " medieval miasma" theory has been resurrected. A pram has a larger surface area so a higher exposure to the "bad air" ..

RumbaswithPumbaas · 12/05/2020 22:55

pinksparklypussycat phone your vets tomorrow, they will definitely be able to help you Smile

TinRoofRusty · 12/05/2020 22:59

Oh, yes, jakey, they're a special type of Dementor. 'I've found out what's valuable.' Man, you must be a real dunce not to have figured that out already. They are in the same class of Dementor as the 'It's worrying you're so quick to want to be rid of your children'.

In fact, there should be a choir system for Dementors, you know, like the 9 choirs of angels, with seraphim at the top.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 12/05/2020 22:59

I will. I’m worried as he had a dental infection and broken jaw 4 years ago and I always worry he’ll have more problems. He’s got hardly any teeth left so I don’t want him to lose more. We were also told he had early kidney disease and heart failure (the last one was a false alarm thankfully) so I panic what might be next!

TinRoofRusty · 12/05/2020 23:01

No need to apologise here, farting, you're preaching to the choir (no pun intended given my above comment ;) ).
