It has been thirty years since I proper fell over

Fixed that tonight out on a run. Somehow tripped over my own feet and went down like a sedation-darted elephant. Now nursing all my bruises and grazes, with a particularly fetching peppa pig plaster on one elbow. FFS.

Please tell me some of you have achieved similar feats of elegance and grace?

I stupidly stood on a chair ..... with wheels... to change a lightbulb..... mumsnetter you know what happened next right?....
In my defence I’d put the wheels on a rug thinking it would stop it moving!!
I fell backwards off chair, knocked myself out landing heavily on coccyx and head.Had to drag myself across to kitchen on coming round to call for help!
That was 2 years ago and my lower back has never been the same since and I’m terrified of standing on anything high !Grin

Redcrayons · 10/05/2020 22:12

I’ve got scars on my knees from running falls. I’m like an 8 year old.

Fortunately I’ve not done it for a while, last time I broke my fall with my hand and had a whopper of a bruise for weeks. And even worse, I chipped my watch screen .

I’m also wondering when I move from ‘fell over’ to ‘had a fall’.

Goatinthegarden · 10/05/2020 22:12

humblesims I fall over fairly often (couple of times a year), always on a busy street. No one ever asks if I’m ok and for that, I am grateful.

I have perfected the ‘jump back up and trot off at speed’ in the hope no one notices!

ShipshapeShore · 10/05/2020 22:13

I started a new job in a primary school last year. Second day on duty in the playground and I tripped over part of the trail, did a weird sort of dive and then rolled on my back like a beetle Blush. Playground is also next to a main road. I had blue knees for the rest of the day too! I was mortified.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 10/05/2020 22:13

I am very fall-y overly

DD swears I once tripped over a painted line in the road...

MutteringDarkly · 10/05/2020 22:14

I proper sucked my breath in reading that - the more I read these, the more surprised I am that I haven't hard more disasters TBH.

This happens to me more often than I'd like.
Day of my first A Level I ended up in a&e having my knee stitched back together where I'd tripped over my own feet and smashed my knee on the corner of a concrete step (made it back for the exam)

Broke a bone in the middle of my foot when my heel got stuck between some cobbles. Actually heard the snapping sound

Fell down the stairs at work, bruising each vertebrae.

Slipped on ice, needed super strength painkillers and another tablet that made me have out of body experiences

Twisted my ankle and ended up in a heap walking my tutor group back from assembly. Poor kids didn't know what to do.

Just before lockdown fell over my own feet/ankle went from under me and smashed my face into the pavement. Nice 3cm gash on my eyebrow and not feeling quite right for weeks after

I probably shouldn't ever be allowed out by myself

Unravellingslowly · 10/05/2020 22:16

Yep. Late 30’s. Parked my car in the car park, walked over to the pay and display and fell. Actually went “oooof” as I hit the ground. A young man (well early -mid 20’s so a lot younger than me) turned at the noise then came to help me up.
I grazed my hands and my knee bled through my jeans.

TSSDNCOP · 10/05/2020 22:16

I went running, I am not a natural but there I was running along I may have had a little mental chariots of fire soundtrack in my head. Then 3 fucking "oh they've got fabulous recall and are so friendly!" dogs ran around my feet.

Arse over tit. Fat lip, grazes everywhere, bruised knees, bruised elbows.

Not a single apology from the dog people. Wankers.

GrouchyKiwi · 10/05/2020 22:18

I have a Newfoundland dog. She's not quite 2 now but doing very well with calm walks. However, when she was about 10 months old and well over 30kg she pulled me over on a walk. It was 90% my fault, to be fair.

I was wearing boots with no grip, and we were walking up a steep, damp grassy hill. A couple came out to play fetch with their two dogs and my pup was entranced. She started running for the ball too. I should have let her go, I don't know why I didn't. I held on to the lead and started running faster and faster down that hill till my feet literally couldn't keep up and then I went head over heels down the hill. The people very kindly didn't laugh and just held on to the beast till I picked myself up and took her home again.

Grandmi · 10/05/2020 22:19

I have always been a bit clumsy, but last June I Fell over whilst walking the dog and dislocated my shoulder and fractured humerus (arm) . The pain was horrific,3 hr wait for ambulance...! I am now sooo careful out walking..it really effected my confidence. I can now really understand how the elderly loose theirs and I am only in my 50s .

MutteringDarkly · 10/05/2020 22:21

Somewhat surreally my soundtrack was Noel Coward as my usual music wouldn't work so I had the radio instead.

What I'm taking from this is that I should take the good drugs to numb the shame pain overnight.

I totally failed to step off a pavement properly when crossing the road once. No idea how but I caught my heel on the kerb, fell forward onto my other knee and palms of hands.

Tried to style it out but I ended up with gravel in my hands, ripped my trousers over the knee and the skin on my knee. I had to hobble to the nearest bench and put my head between my knees as I thought the pain was going to make me faint, I had that horrible buzzing sensation in my head.

Had to ring my husband to pick me up in the end.

Nonagoninfinity · 10/05/2020 22:29

I fell over while running and broke my elbow into 15 pieces. I now have an arm full of metal that won't straighten. It was only supposed to be a little run around the block Confused

yorkshireteaspoonie · 10/05/2020 22:33

OMG @fallfallfall ! I was feeling so sorry for myself until I read your post! I spent all morning in A&E today after falling over on my own drive yesterday.

8 weeks of working from home, not going anywhere but one dog walk a day... and the day that exercise restrictions are lifted, I hit the deck and now have a 'Jones fracture' to my right 5th metatarsal on one foot and a gaping wound on the other knee.

Cast and non weight bearing for at least 6 weeks with min 12 weeks recovery. I could cry... and have cried a lot!!

Pickles89 · 10/05/2020 22:33

@MutteringDarkly Ooo how horrible, you poor thing! Really hope you're better soon!

I don't remember properly hurting myself through clumsiness, just little things, like the scar on my wrist from when I thought it would be best to fall down the last few stairs scraping it against the rough stone wall as I went. I never really hurt myself, but I'm ALWAYS doing clumsy things! I walk into shut doors, or if I make it through get my clothes caught on the handles, I splash myself with kettle water, stub my toes and bang my knees. I dropped a Goddam sabatier knife just a couple of days ago! It missed me but it could so nearly have been like that Friends episode with Chandler's toe! I'm such a ridiculously clumsy mare!

Windyatthebeach · 10/05/2020 22:34

Just before lockdown I managed to get chance to take ddog for a decent beach walk alone.
I walk at quite a fast pace - not get much opportunity to with a 5 yo dc.
I had gathered a bit of speed when ddog decided 'oh we must be on a run' so started running....got to the end of her long line and twang....
Resulted in one bobble hat wearing 48 yo flat on her back on a beach with lots of spectators...
Hard to make a dignified exit with a twisted ankle and specs covered in sand ..
Ime..
Blush

Pickles89 · 10/05/2020 22:35

God this thread is making me wince! (Very gentle, social distancing too of course) hugs to you all who are currently in the wars! Sending 'fast healing' vibes!

ItsSpittingEverybodyIn · 10/05/2020 22:38

The last time I really fell was about 2-3 years ago. Dd was about 6 months old and I was popping out onto the drive to put something in the bin, she started crying so I picked her up and took her with me, but I stumbled on the drain cover and one leg went one way and the the other the opposite, somehow I kept dd up in the air as I landed in a heap but I had a grazed knee, sprained ankle and grazed elbow, dd was thankfully unharmed. I sat on the floor for ten minutes sobbing I was in that much pain with my ankle, it was a real shock!

Zeebeededodah · 10/05/2020 22:40

Me. Thought it would be a good idea to teach the kids to leap frog. They were doing a good job but thought I should show them that Mummy can do it too. Bad idea - 9 year old didn't stay still and I hit the tarmac Blush

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 10/05/2020 22:42

Tripped up a kerb in Morrison's car park and went flying into the path of a (thankfully slowly) moving car. For some reason I thought it would be a good idea to throw my handbag into the air as I went down so the driver had to wait patiently while I recovered myself and the entire contents of my Mary Poppins bag.

MerryGoRoundBrain · 10/05/2020 22:45

Here’s my “best” falling over story. I was only a few months into a new job. 5pm finish, pretty much everyone from my office queuing at the bus stop. Bus arrived, everyone got on it I ran. I fell, tripping over my own feet. Bleeding knees, trousers ripped on the knees, grazed elbows and face. It gets worse though! The bus driver saw this and got off the bus to check if I was ok (bless him). Everyone on the bus had to wait for me to get up and get on that bloody bus. It’s been 7 years and I still wince thinking about it.
Hope it cheered you up OP Flowers and I hope you’re not suffering too badly for too long.

amusedbush · 10/05/2020 22:45

I fractured my ankle four years ago in Paris. I was walking down a sloped street in the middle of the afternoon, sober as a judge, wearing comfortable trainers Confused my legs just gave way under me.

DH said it was funny at first because I sort of wobbled, then charged headlong down the hill for a few steps at a 45 degree angle as I tried to catch myself before hitting the deck Blush

It hurt at the time but I shook it off and managed to walk around all day on it. The next morning, though, it was black and blue and twice its normal size. It still gives me bother - I can’t believe I broke it tripping over nothing!

Lozz22 · 10/05/2020 22:47

Walking to the swimming pool, tripped over a kerb and went smack on my face. Even worse it was on a slight incline so I also skidded down the pavement and skinned both knees and took a nice chunk out my left hand. Had to ask the receptionist for some plasters. It was a bit stingy getting in the water

Slipped into the bath. I'd already been in the bath but took the bath mat out whilst I was in there. Stepped out and reached up to grab the shower to rinse down the soap suds that were still in there. Couldn't reach it so put the bath mat back in pushed it down. Put my left foot in the bath on top of the mat and pushed off the floor with my right foot to reach up and grab the shower down. Bath mat slipped and left leg shot forward. Right foot which was still actually wet shot backwards straight into the pipes of the towel radiator. Smashed my face off the bath taps and bust my lip open and I ended up in a heap in the middle of the bath. Smashed my hooha so hard on the side of the bath as I went down I actually thought I'd broken it. Had a cracking bruise on it. Also had a bruise from my groin all the way down to my knee, round the back of my leg, up the back of my thigh and half way up my left arse cheek. I would say now I'm a bit more cautious getting in the bath only last year when I was Pregnant I decided to have a soak in the bath because I was cold. Bath doesn't have anything to grab hold on when lowering oneself in. Grabbed the sides of the bath hands slipped and I crashed into bottom of it

Genderwitched · 10/05/2020 22:53

I was walking down a wet road in Scotland while about seven months pregnant when the leg that was out front slipped forwards and I did the splits. It was absolutely excruciating, as I hadn't been able to do them before Smile
