Never dyed it. Started going grey at 18 (runs in the family) and am now 43. I am lucky in that the way mine has gone grey makes it look like I have highlights. A good haircut helps enormously. I too have an undercut, having decided to go a bit punk in my 40s. Would never dye it a ‘natural’ colour - if I did dye it, it would be magenta pink or bright red.

okiedokieme · 09/05/2020 18:48

47 and debating whether to dye or leave it

Cocolapew · 09/05/2020 18:48

I don't know when I started to go grey because I was always dyeing my hair, I stopped dyeing at 45 but then dyed it again.
I stopped last march and I'm completely dye free now at 51.
My hair is white at the front and underneath and its a darker grey towards the back .

Tiramisuiloveyou · 09/05/2020 18:52

22 just before i was 54 (i went lighter as i was sick of the regrowth been blonde/grey for nearly a year now going to go as grey as i can in lock down then see how i proceed.

Daisydoesnt · 09/05/2020 18:53

49! Which is coming up for a year ago

I’ve had shoulder length hair for years which used to be dark brown. I’ve been going grey since my late twenties and have been colouring since then.

I decided last summer to have it all cut short (really short! Like an inch all over) and it’s my favourite ever haircut. I’m really really grey but it looks ace. Shiny. I think it’s really flattering, although I have rethought what I wear in terms of colours. My temples are a whitish grey although it’s darker at the back.

If you’re thinking about taking the plunge I’d say go for it!

I started to go grey in my 20's but I'd have my hair coloured every 6 weeks so no-one really knew. About 12 years ago, I was 50, I decided to stop colouring my hair and Ive been grey for about 10 years now. I love it. And so do others seemingly as my hairdresser tells me she's often asked by clients if she knows the woman who is (they then describe me in a particular way due to something Im known for locally ) and if so can they have their hair done the same colour.

Im still in the hairdressers as often as I was previously because I find my hair is very easily sun damaged so to stop it looking yellow/brassy I have it cut and treated every 6 weeks.

TheClootieDumplin · 09/05/2020 19:02

Sorry I have about 3 different shades of grey in my hair and it looks as if Ive had highlights and low lights put in. My lightest shade of grey is white. I love it.

Gobbolinocat · 09/05/2020 19:06

Never.
I went grey white in late 30s.Not entirely but enough to really age me.
I used to drag a lip stick type brown stick over it! Until I realised... Root hair dye it cheap and easy to use.
I do it once every 3 months and I have look at young again! So easy!!

RoscoePColtrane · 09/05/2020 19:11

Found my first at 40. Now have maybe 50 greys at 46, though they seem to be arriving monthly now. I will not be colouring it and have fingers crossed for a Mallen streak,as about 10 there now.

40somethingJBJ · 09/05/2020 19:14

I’m nearly 42 and just starting to get some grey. It’s unlikely that I’ll decide to dye it anytime soon as I’m not big on getting it cut, let alone regular colouring!

Whataloadofshite · 09/05/2020 19:18

I started going grey at thirteen. By the time I was twenty-five, I was totally silvery. I was dying it black until my early thirties, and then one summer I shaved my head and let all the silver grow through.

Bohomie · 09/05/2020 21:29

I'm 39 and have only just started noticing the odd one or two grey ones poking through but I have allergic reactions to hair dye so they'll have to stay as they are whether I like it or not.

TheClootieDumplin · 10/05/2020 13:01

Anyone who has gone grey, did you feel it aged you?

No. Not at all. I was conscious of the fact it could so I had my colours done, had makeup lessons, revamped my wardrobe completely and it took years off me whilst fighting the grey with highlights and lowlights added years to me because it’s not how I was supposed to be looking. It’s not just a persons hair colour that changes. Their skin tone etc does also.

wowfudge · 10/05/2020 15:17

I think my face shows I am in my forties. My natural grey is more flattering for my skin tone than my hair was when it was dyed.

YouJustDoYou · 10/05/2020 15:18

32

copycopypaste · 10/05/2020 15:18

I stopped dying my hair about 2 years ago. My hair is about shoulder blade length and I'd say I'm well over halfway there now

YouJustDoYou · 10/05/2020 15:20

Anyone who has gone grey, did you feel it aged you?

Not particularly. I'm mid 30s but I like my hair going silvery. I think I look my age more when I try and hide it under dye.

Lemonblast · 10/05/2020 15:25

Mine is in the best condition it’s ever been and no hairdresser/lockdown stress Grin I use silver shampoo/conditioner every couple of days and if I have somewhere special to go ( remember those days!) I’ll use it daily for about 10 days beforehand to give it a very subtle lilac lift.

WhatHaveIFound · 10/05/2020 15:28

I have never dyed my hair due to a combination of skin allergies and not being bothered. I have been greying since my mid 30s. I think it's now over 50%.

TheClootieDumplin · 10/05/2020 16:32

Mine is in the best condition it’s ever been

So is mine.

I love it.

Koddii · 10/05/2020 16:40
  1. I am mostly dark brown with white stands through it. I am happy I gave up box dye as was doing a semi permanent every month. My hair feels much better now.
cheesycrisps · 10/05/2020 16:42

And mine. I wash it most days, don’t use conditioner in the shower just a bit of spray in before drying.

Also love it

PickledLilly · 13/05/2020 16:07

My concern with mine is how very stripey it grows. The one very white stripe is the first place I went grey. Had just that one stripe for many years before the rest joined in. I think it would look better if it was all that colour but I’ve got dark bits and grey bits and white bits and it just looks a bit...badgery.

If you are grey, what age did you decide to go for it ?
SweetPetrichor · 13/05/2020 16:27

I have a few grey hairs - think the first few came through when I was in my late 20s and now I'm 31. I don't intend to dye it but I do have my hair shaved to only a few mm long so there's not much point...it'd be constantly roots...I'd have to dye it every week!

justjuggling · 13/05/2020 20:59

I’m 46 and considering doing it now. My roots needed doing before lockdown and now I have a very obvious line above my ears. It looks dreadful currently but I put it up for work anyway and am thinking I might as well keep going.
