I've been going grey now for around 10 or more years and I've never tried to hide it because I don't mind the colour and I am too lazy to do anything with it anyway. I'm 40 now and the grey is more visible and makes my hair look streaky.

Cantfindaholiday · 09/05/2020 17:09

Started going grey very young, 20s. Just went with it, never dyed, love my grey. Probably do look older but just couldn't give a fuck 😁. It's relaxing not to care. I'm not a very chilled person generally unfortunately, just about my looks.

LER83 · 09/05/2020 17:13

I'm 36 and my hair is coming through quite grey now. I've decided to let it go all grey, but as it grows soo slowly I'm quite tempted to get the hairdresser to dye it all, then just leave it.

maresydoats · 09/05/2020 17:23

Last box dye was just before Christmas. Then came the lockdown, I decided to let it grow out. It's taking ages, but it looks like a pepper and salt and blonde mix, not the beautiful silver that looks so well on others.

Any products (not dye) that might help even out the colour does anyone know. It is also wiry ho hum.

Am late 50s, so am late to the party! Time to stop pretending and get on with it.

BoneAppleTeaa · 09/05/2020 17:26
  1. No regrets.
BoneAppleTeaa · 09/05/2020 17:28

That is to say I was nearly completely grey at 38 and stopped colouring. I started going grey in my mid 20s.

iwantmyownicecreamvan · 09/05/2020 17:29

Started going grey in my late 30s/early 40s and dyed it and/or used highlights until I was early 60s. I just thought - I'm in my 60s, who do I think I'm kidding and what's wrong with grey hair anyway - men can be silver foxes can't they?

It took me 2 years to grow it out though as I have a just above shouder length bob and wasn't brave enough to crop it short.

I wish I had done it years ago - in fact like some people on here, I wish I had never bothered dyeing it to begin with.

BrennieGirl · 09/05/2020 17:34

I've had some grey hair since I was a teenager. I've been colouring it since my mid 20s. I'm now 46 and about 90% grey.

I had quite dark brown hair. I've been working with my hairdresser to lighten it for the past couple of years with the aim of going grey gradually. But since I haven't had it coloured since February, I'm tempted to just cut/grow out the dye completely. I actually don't like my hair being a lighter colour but I think that's just a hankering to be young again!

Anyone who has gone grey, did you feel it aged you?

Wotrewelookinat · 09/05/2020 17:35

Mid 40s can’t remember exactly... just got fed up with the cost, the time it took and started thinking about the environmental damage of the hair dye. I’m 50 now and very salt and peppery which I really like! Have a very short crop too.

pinkyboots1 · 09/05/2020 17:37

I stopped dying mine at the beginning of the year and it's very white at the front and sprinkles everywhere else, I'm growing out my pixie cut into a Bob too so got a crazy lockdown vibe going on! I taking advantage of the sunshine to help lightened up my hair ready for a big reveal ... I'm almost 50.

lljkk · 09/05/2020 17:43

First white hairs when I was 19,I never dyed to not have it. I guess it's been mostly grey since mid 40s. I like being a rare woman who actually looks her true age. But because of the rampant hair dying by everyone else my natural '52' probably looks like everyone else's 72. This is hilarious. I like being under-estimated, mind. I think my grey makes me look distinguished (rare look for me).

WinterAndRoughWeather · 09/05/2020 17:46

I dyed my hair (permanent and semi permanent) from about the age of 16 until I decided to grow it out at 34. It took about 18 months for it all to go. I’m 38 now and have a few grey hairs, but I don’t plan to dye it again. Too much faff. Plus my natural colour suits me, who’d have thought?

PawPatrolMakesMeDrink · 09/05/2020 17:52

When people say they use a silver toner what product is that? I’ve had a look on amazon and it just seems to bring up silver hair dyes?

reesewithoutaspoon · 09/05/2020 17:58

decided to grow it out around 49. got sick of roots on show most of the time and was starting to react to dyes. kept it up in a pony tail for the first few months and used color wow/loreal colour spray to lessen the silverback gorilla look. Then once I had about 3 inches of regrowth I got a short cut.
Condition is so much better, not having to do roots is a godsend. would never go back to dyes

KidsWorkMastersLife · 09/05/2020 18:00

I’m 41. I last dyed my hair 3 weeks before lockdown. Now have hefty roots and have discovered a fabulous white stripe at one temple so I am planning to grow out the colour during lockdown. My offices won’t be open before July at earliest so taking the opportunity of no one to see the roots before they’re long enough to lop the colour off.

QuimJongUn · 09/05/2020 18:04

I've started to so many times - the longest I went was 10 months without dyeing it, when I was 40 (I've been completely grey since I was 30). In fact I just dyed it a couple of days ago after leaving it for 3 months. The natural grey is a beautiful colour and gorgeous condition but DH absolutely hates it so I always end up dyeing it!

FraughtwithGin · 09/05/2020 18:09

I would not mind being be grey/white and, in fact had my first white hair at 15 when I was very stressed out, but, although I get the odd white hair they seem to disappear again.
Mind you not going especially grey does run in the family, so it is probably genetic. I will be 62 this year.

Theforest · 09/05/2020 18:09

I am 48 and have been dyeing mine for 20 years. I let it grow in the lockdown until last week when I just had to do it.

I like let it grow naturally and have a pixie cut idea though. If mine was whiter, I think I would consider it.

Apolloanddaphne · 09/05/2020 18:12

56 but wish I had done it sooner. My hair is an amazing colour.

FizzAfterSix · 09/05/2020 18:13

I noticed first grey hair in early 50's, I'm 57 and there are a few more grey hairs around the front but they are not too noticeable as I'm blonde.

1066vegan · 09/05/2020 18:20

I'm early 50s and my first grey/white hairs started appearing when I was in my 40s. I've never dyed my hair (apart from black when I went through a Goth phase many years ago). I really couldn't be bothered with the faff of touching up the roots.

Nomorewine77 · 09/05/2020 18:28

About a month ago. I'm 43. Gave myself a buzzcut a couple of days ago to get rid of an over processed bleached, damaged mess! Probably about 30% grey. Feel like a badass right now Grin

Jasmin82 · 09/05/2020 18:28
  1. I dyed my hair from the age of 16 when I started going grey. I was completely grey by the age of 30, but kept dying my hair. Got to 36 and thought "to heck with it".
TheNationalToastBoard · 09/05/2020 18:34

I'm 37, and I'm growing mine out during lockdown.

Start of March, I shaved it with the guards off the clippers, so it was virtually shirt if stubble.

My temples each have a large silver grey area and I look ridiculous right now but my hope is that when it's grown out properly, it'll look cool.

Because I used to dye cool streaks into the front of my hair, years ago.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 09/05/2020 18:39

This is mine now.
I'm naturally a mousey brown - or was.
I got fed up of dying it red and darker browns. So had highlights put in. And wasn't impressed as it was not as ashy/lighter as I wanted. But it was good at blending the grey a bit.
Then I put on my own streaks with a bronde kit. Which was quite dramatic at lightening it. But it came out with a fair bit of red in making it a bit ginger.

Here it is after a few months of not dying it - and getting stumped by the lockdown, which has prompted me to just go for it as I don't want to start again.

It's got a lot of white in the grey. With the red tones still at the ends but growing out. I think the grey is blending in quite well as it grows out.
