  1. Now late 30's and I'd say I'm 1/3 grey.
Fluora · 08/05/2020 20:10

50

I’m 38 but very grey indeed. I’ve got a good couple of inches of lockdown grey roots and I’m seriously considering just letting it grow out. My hair grows fast and I just can’t keep up with dyeing it constantly. I’m worried it will look a bit draining as I’m quite pale skinned but now seems like the perfect time to try it.

dun1urkin · 08/05/2020 20:10

I’m 43 and haven’t ever dyed my hair. I think I found my first white hair about 4 years ago, and can see a fair bit myself now, but have to point it out to others for them to believe me.
I’m blonde, if that makes a difference. It’s obviously much less noticeable than it would be if my hair was dark. I’m planning on just letting it happen and seeing how I like it.

DelurkingAJ · 08/05/2020 20:20

I’m nearly 40 and finding a few greys suddenly in my dark hair. I’m dithering about whether I’ll start dyeing my hair if it gets more noticeable (I’ve never dyed it before). This thread makes me think not!

CatsMother66 · 08/05/2020 20:29

45 I started going grey and it made me look drab. At about 50 it was more grey/white than my mousey brown so I enhanced it and I think it’s lovely. I tone it and aim for a bright white.

CormoranStrike · 08/05/2020 20:30

45! Love my silver

OstrichRunning · 08/05/2020 20:42

now, at 43. I reckon lockdown is the perfect opportunity. I got dh to give me an undercut yesterday which I love and it feels like progress. Down the line, I might cut the long hair on top to hurry up the process.

Been doing a bit of googling on this lately and these are meant to be good products for grey hair -

Philip Kingsley pure silver conditioner
colour wow pop and lock high gloss shellac

I think fanola no more yellow is a good shampoo to keep it nice and fresh looking too.

I've found that it costs way too much in time and money to have nice looking dyed hair. It's great to be finished with all that Smile

  1. That's was 5 years ago. I've never regretted it. I don't know why anyone would want to keep faffing with colour now.
DrMadelineMaxwell · 08/05/2020 20:52

I'm 46. I've been dyeing it for years but the grey was coming through more ovbiously and more quickly. So I lightened my brown hair to a dark blonde, which has made the grey regrowth less obvious.
I was overdue for putting another londe box on it - not to bleach it lighter, but to tint the grey a more gold colour - and then the lockdown happened and I'm very interested to see what it will look like when it has grown out fully.

A few years ago I taught year 4 and one of my class, while standing next to me and I was sat down, looked down and said 'Mrs Maxwell, your hair is all twinkly'

I'm happy to get more and more twinkly and see what it looks like when it's natural. The blonde has gone a bit ginger now and I don't like it. I'm tempted to do a colour remover, but I've used it in the past and ended up VERY ginger with white roots.

Dontstepinthecowpat · 08/05/2020 20:54

Last year at 34, now completely grey and just throw a silver toner on every 4-6 weeks. I’ve had grey hair since I was 15 and I much prefer it now, I was having to go to the hairdressers to colour every 4 weeks which was time consuming and expensive. I’m so glad I’ve done it.

Eeyoresstickhouse · 08/05/2020 20:56

I'm 42 and a red head but have pure white hairs coming through a lot more now. I used to dye my hair years ago and went through 2 years of completely growing it out so I'm not going to start dying it again.

elp30 · 08/05/2020 21:02

I have naturally jet-black hair so it was quite noticeable when I started seeing white hair at age 18.

I started dyeing my hair around age 30 when it was very, very noticeable and by the time I was 40, my hair was in horrific shape and breaking and it was a losing battle to keep the grey hair away. I finally gave up dyeing my hair at age 45 and now I am 49 but with 90% white hair, it's not grey.

I have quite dark skin and black eyebrows and shocking white hair. I am not too bothered though. When it's possible to go back to the hairdressers again, I think I'll start getting the ends colored and have fun with it.

LadyRochfordsHoickedGusset · 08/05/2020 21:05

I'm really curious about this as I have only the odd grey atm, but it's not grey it's bright white.

PickledLilly · 08/05/2020 21:20

I do think it’s different if you’re blonde, it just doesn’t show up the same. My original hair colour was very dark and I started going grey at about 17! My roots now are an odd mix of dark, grey and white. I’ve got very long hair so I’m worried about how long it’s going to take to grow out but I would like to stop dyeing it because it’s a constant job but it all looks very multicoloured at the moment!

GiantKitten · 08/05/2020 21:35

Late 50s I think.

I did colour for roughly 10 years before that, but the root situation got worse and worse, the dye process was uncomfortable, & the colour was hideous Grin

My ideal colour would be ash; what I’ve actually got is mainly slightly yellowy white, which I don’t like, but is still better than dyed-plus-grey-roots alternative.

cremuel · 08/05/2020 21:43

I’m just doing it now - ages 44. I was really overdue for a dye before lockdown and now it has grown out a lot. I waver between being pleased to have giving up dying it and being desperate to get back to the hairdresser. I feel really self-conscious on zoom calls and spend most of my time looking at how grey I look. But I think I’ll stick with it, it’s so silly to spend so much time and money pretending not to age.

MadameJosephine · 08/05/2020 21:57

47, took a while to grow it all out so I had dyed blonde hair with long grey roots but now at 48 I’m all grey

Oriflamme · 08/05/2020 21:59

26 but I really went for it at 31, used silver shampoo etc. and it looked fab, no regrets! (People used to ask me where I’d got my highlights done, it was a pleasure to tell them it was all natural)

DappledThings · 08/05/2020 22:11

Started about 30. Now 40 and it's about 30% grey I think. Never dyed it, not planning to start.

Candyflosscookie · 08/05/2020 22:17

So interesting reading everyone's positive stories. I'm early 50s and been wondering if I'll stop colouring soon. Roots are looking very white as I pass the due date for the hairdresser visit. Wondering if I'll be able to stand the growing out process. Following Grombre on Insta for some inspiration!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 09/05/2020 16:41

I can only use one or two dye brands as the others make me unbearably itchy a few hours later. So although I know which one is best (and very hard to find at the start anyway) it does worry me that it is building to a proper allergic reaction which is one more incentive to step away from the dye.

DrinkVeneer · 09/05/2020 16:56

Reading with interest as I'm 49 and would like to let the grey in. I'm tempted to take advantage of the lockdown haitus but actually looking at the roots although I have lots of grey on top and at the front there still isn't much at the back so I don't think I'm ready yet. I only dye because although I'd originally planned to go grey naturally in fact when it started happening the combination of grey and my mousey brown looked dull and unappealing. As soon as I get to a decent amount of grey at the back I'll stop dying it brown and try to lighten/whiten but unfortunately I'm not there yet I don't think.

It doesn't help that my hair is curly and I wear it natural albeit with a good cut - the combination of natural+greying as opposed to all grey just looks unkempt.

DrinkVeneer · 09/05/2020 16:58

I am really looking forward to having white curls though!
