What do you think Boris’ announcement will be on Sunday?

So Boris is to make his lockdown review announcement on Sunday as per the three week schedule.

I’ve heard reports that he may possibly relax restrictions - possibly even starting as early as next Monday.

Does anyone think this is just the media saying that or does anyone think the rules will stay the same or perhaps be made stricter?

I would prefer to follow something similar to Ireland. It’s quite clear steps

fourpeasinapod · 07/05/2020 10:27

Although I am positive that they are talking about easing the restrictions, I do have an anxiety that this is too much too soon!

Yes we have to get back to work to help the economy, yes we can’t stay locked up forever but I’d be scared all this is going to make it worse!

I know we are over the peak but why do the daily statistics seem so high?

@TheDrsDocMartens yes! I think their plan is great

The stats are high because the peak was even higher.
We are over the peak in the general population, but care homes are a big issue.
People dying now were mainly infected 3-4 weeks ago.

What I really don't think we are being told is who are the people getting infected now? Is it all health care workers (and similar) and family/clients, or is it still widely 'at large' in the population.

Are people getting infected whose source isn't obvious? This is why we would benefit from track & trace.

Thisdressneedspockets · 07/05/2020 11:22

I don't think he'll say anything that would require a change to legislation around reasonable excuses to leave the house, or gatherings. I think there will be some direction on which businesses can be open.

So I'm guessing

  • exercise more than once per day (which was always the case), possibly to include a bit of sitting about on grass with households.
  • you can meet a friend outdoors if you are careful about space between you. (Gatherings of two not from the same household were always lawful)
  • something about what can be bought. - takeaway coffee, paint for home improvements etc.
  • the reasonable excuse list was never exhaustive, so maybe one or two more examples of a reasonable excuse added to guidelines. I can't think what though.
  • Some firming up of what they don't want happening. Eg now we've given you this much as appears sensible to do since we've made such great strides ( the stuff we are always ok to do anyway), we must reiterate that you must not do XY and Z . ( The things that remain unlawful)

Yes, I want to know this, so that regardless of what is announced I can make my own risk assessments about whether any relaxing of guidelines makes sense for my family.

Tbh I have to agree with what Nicola Sturgeon has just said.

It’s kinda too soon for all this. I’m glad she’s sticking up for Scotland and not allowing Boris to push her into easing lockdown

I hope they give a timeframe for schools. I don’t want my children to go back in June so announcing a later date would make me feel better. I can’t fathom how it is safe to send children to school and all that entails but not safe to go to a restaurant or the gym? I understand that not as many children have caught the virus but some have, with tragic outcomes in some cases!

LaneBoy · 07/05/2020 14:59

All I’m really bothered about is my 12yo being able to go back to school even if it’s part time. So I hope that will be announced soon.

I quite like the social bubble idea (although probably difficult to manage in reality) if it means we can have couple of friends round, and most importantly see my DSCs (they are adults so the essential travel for contact thing doesn’t apply!)

I’d love the gym/pool to be open but I know that is not going to happen for a long time.

We’ve been very lucky here and neither the town centre park or park/lake we live very near to have been closed at all, other than the actual play equipment being closed off (although that hasn’t stopped people using the outdoor gym) but I’m still interested to see what rule changes there are re going out generally.

Dowser · 07/05/2020 15:30

I think Bojo will blow his whistle like Paddy in the ragtrade ( showing my age) and holler
Everyone out! 😂

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 07/05/2020 15:50

Get the hospitals running as usual so other health issues are dealt with, make it safe for dentists and eye clinics to open.

No one needs to picnic etc, those that are already breaking lockdown will just continue above and beyond what’s allowed anyway. We should have gone much stricter and had the permit system like others.

fourpeasinapod · 07/05/2020 15:53

I know! I’m due at the hygienist in the last week of this month! Wonder if that will happen or not?

AIBU to be scared that Sunday night Boris is going to announce something out of the blue, and then Monday morning I'm going to be expected back in the office?

I don't think that will happen but it has me worried somehow.

fourpeasinapod · 07/05/2020 15:59

@safariboot wouldn’t say YABU . I think it’s all a bit strange and too fast

I think non essential shops should re open, although that creates child care issues for many. Also building sites facotires etc providing appropriate distancing and PPE provided.
Also can't see why activities like golf and fishing can't be allowed.
Re parks etc, the problem with this is they will be mega busy because we're all off work.
I saw an article yesterday which said 332 people of the 30000 that have died were under 45 yet this is the bulk of the workforce which are being paid to stay at home. I totally think that's 332 too many, and there's no indication of how many more would have died from all groups without these measures, but looking at that figure independently it's hard to justify us all being paid to stay home.

If they don't allow garden centres and plant nurseries to re-open, the horticulture industry could go under completely. They have millions of plants worth £££££££ in perishable stock that will have to be chucked away if they aren't able to sell it very soon.

HerLadySheep · 07/05/2020 16:18

I'm not sure how true that is about lots of stock sitting around in nursery's, when I've tried to order plants online it's proven hugely tricky to get stock.

fourpeasinapod · 07/05/2020 16:26

I don’t think garden centres will have to throw away stock. I’m sure they sell a lot of it online

I think it will go one of two ways. Either it will be too much too soon or nothing will change. I have the feeling it will be the latter.

So all there will be that will be mentioned from Monday is that businesses that didn't have to close in the first place will be encouraged to open.
It will be mentioned that we can exercise for more than once and for longer than an hour (which has been allowed anyway)
We will be allowed takeaways (again also allowed)
But the only difference will be is that there will be a plan for us to see. He wont go into it all in detail in his announcement, but there will be somewhere to look online to see it properly. We will know when schools will look to go back and how (ie what year and when). We will have a better idea when we can go out for the day. We will can plan when we might go to the pub/restaurant whatever. Even if some of these are still months away. We will have a better idea.

I just hope that I dont have to go back to the office any time soon and I'd like to be able to visit family 60 miles away. Everything else that matters to me we're a long long way off, if at all this year (parkrun and races) and have got used to this idea.

SomewhereEast · 07/05/2020 17:14

Indications from other European countries where restrictions have already been eased somewhat are looking encouraging (schools have been open in Denmark for over a fortnight with no signs of trouble for example). One 'advantage' of the UK locking down late is that we're also going to ease restrictions later too, so can follow events elsewhere. I

I thought the reopening of schools had pushed Denmark’s R number up close to 1?!

fourpeasinapod · 07/05/2020 17:32

Now they’re saying they won’t be relaxing lockdown!

Wales will not be sending schools back on 1st June according to their press conference today. So that’s N. Ireland, Scotland and Wales now all delaying schools going back, I wonder whether England will follow suit?

Very interesting to see how different governments are dealing with the lifting of restrictions. Some have opened hairdressers first for example whilst others think this is unsafe. France are also lifting their restrictions on regional basis apparently. I would find it very difficult if the U.K. did something similar and I was in a ‘red’ region so I feel for those people in those regions of France.
