Dishwasher cutlery trays

What fresh hell is this? Our dishwasher has gone kaput so looking for a new one. Half of them seem to have these cutlery trays at the top instead of the traditional baskets. I get that it gives you more space but surely it's a total pain in the arse to empty? My dishwasher is in the utility room so I'd have to traipse back and forth. Am I missing something and they're great?

Oh I love ours! I hate the basket.

FlamingoAndJohn · 05/05/2020 14:46

I don’t see how everything would get clean? Too much stuff sitting on top of each other.

SherryPort18 · 05/05/2020 14:47

I can't get on with these either. My mom just got a new dishwasher and took this part out. There was less height for taller items in the top shelf with it in. She just put the basket from the old dishwasher back in to the new one, so hang on to that part!

We are going to be replacing our dishwasher as soon as I can go shopping to look for one and having a tray rather than a basket is a must have for me .

safariboot · 05/05/2020 14:47

Will the tray not come out the same way the baskets do?

ScarfLadysBag · 05/05/2020 14:47

Noooo they're amazing! Light years above those awful cutlery bucket things.

SoupDragon · 05/05/2020 14:48

I love mine.

They get clean because there's a spray arm in the top of the dishwasher.

HerculePoirotsGreyCells · 05/05/2020 14:49

The tray is so much better than the basket!

BeepOpsiePie · 05/05/2020 14:49

I've had both and the tray at the top makes it much easier to unload the cutlery than the basket. You can easily see and pick out all the knives, then all the forks etc.

WombatStewForTea · 05/05/2020 14:50

@FlamingoAndJohn the picture makes it look like they all slot into place which makes sense that it would clean easier but it'd take forever to put everything in surely

I love mine. No hassle at all, everything fits fine and washes beautifully. My dishwasher is right by the cutlery drawer though.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 05/05/2020 14:50

I love mine too. My the cups/glasses rack is adjustable in mine so I can still fit taller glasses & mugs in, as well as having plenty of room for the plates beneath.

ScarfLadysBag · 05/05/2020 14:51

When my husband loads it, he puts the cutlery in groups so you can just grab all the forks, spoons etc at once and put them straight in the drawer. He is v anal about the dishwasher though!

It doesn't really take any more time than putting them in the basket. I find it actually takes less as the baskets never seemed to fit cutlery properly and you had to jam the stuff in, whereas you just lie them down for the tray, no faffing with the little square holes.

gingercat02 · 05/05/2020 14:53

The trays are fab. No bits getting stuck in fork prongs etc. Just put all the knives forks spoons in one place and lift out in handfuls

Houseinthemiddle · 05/05/2020 14:53

They look clumsy but they are good. Mine was close to my cutlery drawer so easy.

Just keep your basket from your old dishwasher if you prefer.

I keep the baskets to store paint brushes in.

AnnofPeeves · 05/05/2020 14:54

The cutlery tray is loads better than the basket. Spotless every time and you don't lose any space in the bottom tray of the dishwasher. Also it lifts out so you can take stuff to your cutlery drawer like that if you want. They aren't new, our dishwasher is ancient and has one. I like the long section down the middle of our tray which means you can keep all the longer and very sharp knives together.

usernameannonymous · 05/05/2020 14:55

Our dishwasher is like this and we LOVE it, so much better for emptying and everything cleans better.

CheriLittlebottom · 05/05/2020 14:55

My parents have one, I hate it, it takes about 11 years to load the dishwasher after a two course meal for six people.

happilybemused · 05/05/2020 14:57

I took ours out. Reduces height so couldn't put any large glasses and mugs on top shelf.

Bought a basket off Amazon and now have a functioning dishwasher again

Chesneyhawkes1 · 05/05/2020 15:01

Tray is so much better!

Janpot66 · 05/05/2020 15:02

Love my top tray so much more space in the rest of the washer I put baking trays on it too. Takes no more time to empty either. Smile

AnnofPeeves · 05/05/2020 15:06

Our cutlery tray is very shallow and takes up hardly any room (less than a basket in the bottom), and the top main basket is adjustable so you can drop it down a little if you want to put larger items in it. There's definitely more capacity in it than in a basket one.

Celticdawn5 · 05/05/2020 15:07

I removed the tray. Total nuisance to slot all the cutlery in place bit by bit. Cutlery basket much easier and you can lift it out to bring it closer to the cutlery drawer when you are unloading.

WombatStewForTea · 05/05/2020 15:08

Ok you've convinced me! I'll keep the old basket just incase we don't get on

I Love mine and also load it in sections with the spoons, knives, forks, chopping knives etc. together so unloading is a breeze.

It gives you more space on the bottom drawer for things like the dog bowl.
