Dishwasher cutlery trays

What fresh hell is this? Our dishwasher has gone kaput so looking for a new one. Half of them seem to have these cutlery trays at the top instead of the traditional baskets. I get that it gives you more space but surely it's a total pain in the arse to empty? My dishwasher is in the utility room so I'd have to traipse back and forth. Am I missing something and they're great?

Can anyone please recommend a slimline dishwasher with plenty of space. Ideally with one of these cutlery trays.

My new/current dishwasher is shit as in the main bottom bit I can only fit the cutlery basket, one saucepan, one frying pan and 4 plates. So now I have to have the dishwasher going twice a day and the cycle is 3.5 hours!

Love my tray, prefer it to the basket, everything comes out clean.

Someone asked about how to load it, I put each cutlery item into individual slots on their side rather than chucking everything on top.i don't find it time consuming.

Yes, we know about the height adjustment, you can either have it too low for 12" plates or too high for pint glasses

Ours adjusts independently each side. So one side of the top basket can be lowered for large glasses but the other side can be left high and you can fit large plates under that side.

I think a couple of people, including a child, have died after falling onto an upwards pointing knife in a dishwasher so that might explain the H & S

I don't understand why people would put sharp knives pointing upwards, that's just stupid. Here small sharp knives go point down, obviously and big ones lay down at the side of the small plates on the top rack.

Otherwise, as well as the 'freak accident falling onto a knife' risk, much more likely that you could cut your hand when taking cutlery out of the basket. Have never had a problem with knives damaging the basket either.

Takes a microsecond or three longer to load the tray with cutlery than chucking it in the basket so I prefer the basket - a few microseconds a day mounts up over time!

I hate the cutlery baskets so have given the cutlery tray a go. It’s only downfall is that if you put bulky pans on the shelf below, the cutlery remains dirty.
I always worried about cutting myself on knives with the basket.

That’s my boring contribution for today.

katiegoestoaldi · 06/05/2020 06:15

That's the dishwasher I have and I love it. Cutlery gets clean every time unlike when it was all bunched together in a basket

KeepWashingThoseHands · 06/05/2020 06:48

I also have that brand of dishwasher and love it. Much more space without the basket, you'll be surprised.

Like others I load cutlery in sets facing the right way (I know I know), but it's soooo satisfying scooping them up and shoving back in the draw in one go. Time saving.

We have one with a tray and because I knew we would be losing room from the top basket when we visited a shop (2 years ago) we took with us our plates, tall glasses etc and cutlery to see how this would work.

We were not prepared to pay £400+ for something without seeing it first due to the tray.

We absolutely love it, it did come with a cutlery basket but we only use the tray.

Loading doesn't take any additional time and we have a system so that forks are loaded in one section of the tray, knives in another. When you go to empty it you just grab all the forks in one go. It is easy.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 06/05/2020 10:31

I don't put my sharp knives through, am I odd? My DM told me that dishwashers blunt them, so I always wash them by hand.

Mishymoshy78 · 06/05/2020 11:20

No i like it. If yoi stack it properly its very easy

woodencoffeetable · 06/05/2020 11:24

my parent are the sane about sharp knives.

tbh I can't be arsed.
if they become blunt I use a sharpener.

minipie · 06/05/2020 13:18

I didn’t put sharp knives through when we had a basket as it did blunt them. The tray doesn’t, not nearly as much anyway. It’s the jostling together with other cutlery that blunts them (same reason for using a knife block not jumbled in a drawer)

0blio · 06/05/2020 13:23

I use both. The tray is for normal cutlery and the basket (from old dishwasher) is for tongs, whisks, blender bits.

BindTheWobbinUp · 06/05/2020 14:01

The tray is marvellous, if you load it so the cutlery is in groups it's so easy to unload. If i could just train my family to load it properly ... I think they do it haphazardly for wind me up!
I used to worry about upturned knives in the cutlery basket so this has eliminated that concern completely.
On my dishwasher (I think it's a Bosch) the upper rack for glasses and mugs has three settings so can be moved up and down accordingly.

Oldraver · 06/05/2020 16:45

We got a b ew one last year and the tray is fab

I also use it to wash the silicone covers and any flat lids as the don't ping up like they can

ParsnipToast · 06/05/2020 16:52

Also a big dishwasher tray fan. It doesn't take ages to load, you don't have to carefully align each piece of cutlery. And you don't have that hideous thing of trying to drop a dirty knife/spoon into the basket without getting it all over your hands. So much cleaner. Super fast to unload as well, I just grab handfuls.
