World War 3 over "cheating" at Cluedo

Two of my children are not talking to me after a fun family game of Cluedo. For example I am sitting holding the cards for the rope and Mrs White. Child A says "Mrs White, in the Dining Room, with the rope". Child B shows child A a card. Because I know I have two of the three, then, I can now cross the Dining Room off the list as there is no other car it can possibly be.

This is apparently blatant cheating, against the spirit of the game and causes meltdowns. Hmm

That’s how the game is played. You are correct, they are not.

CodenameVillanelle · 01/05/2020 19:58

encourage them to learn the strategies too. There is a certain amount of holding back that is necessary when teaching kids how to play games but they mustn't be sore losers. That's not fun for anyone!

dementedma · 01/05/2020 20:00

You were absolutely correct. How else do you play it?

Deduction is NOT allowed! You have to physically SEE the card to cross it off your list. Hmm

And it's not fair. And mum is a cheater. And I never wanted to play Cluedo anyway, Twister is much better. And he's peeking at my cards. And I'm not playing anyway unless I can be Miss Scarlett because she's cool.

How old are they?!

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 01/05/2020 20:07

Are they old enough to watch the film instead?

Da da da da da da!
I am your singing telegram- BANG!

wanderings · 01/05/2020 20:08

Teach them about using the rules to your advantage: not just Cluedo, but lots of others too. How many people know the rule in Monopoly that if someone lands your property, you must actively ask for your rent, and if you fail to do so before the next player throws the dice, the rent is forfeited?

Indeed, I remember last time I looked at the rules for Cluedo it said "bluff suggestions may be made when the person making the suggestion has one or more of the cards in their own hand". I know that's not the situation you have here though.

PineappleDanish · 01/05/2020 20:08

Too bloody old for these silly arguments. And old enough to understand the basics of deduction.

Trivial Pursuit was actually banned in our house after a Christmas game circa 1992.

After a load of hideously hard questions to get the final piece of cheese (2 teams, both just needing to get that last question correct) - the winning question was ‘who was Donald Duck’s girlfriend?’ For the love of the wee man, what dumb-ass question was that? Daisy-sodding-duck.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 01/05/2020 20:10

Cluedo is all about the bluff.

wanderings · 01/05/2020 20:13

Miss Scarlett is cool? I thought the reason everybody wanted to play her is because she always moves first.

@StrictlyAFemaleFemale Ha ha, nice one. It's a shame we didn't hear more lines of her telegram. I loved that film, I watched it so many times! I used to act it out on the game board too, moving the pieces as events happened in the film, using Lego people for the other characters.

CherryValanc · 01/05/2020 20:14

You're right they're wrong.

I suggest you make an L shape with you thumb and forefinger, place it against you forehead and point (with other hand- obviously) and shout "Losers" repeatedly.

Important life lesson for them as to how to handle disagreements.

TenShortStories · 01/05/2020 20:15

What ages are they? I find everyone has to be in the right kind of mood to play a competitive game or it spirals into grumpiness and bad feeling. We have a mix of collaborative and and competitive games and play the collaborative ones much more!

CherryValanc · 01/05/2020 20:16

I was going to say flip the board too, but that might see immature.

BikeRunSki · 01/05/2020 20:17

DDad and his brutyer were never the best of friends, but dud the speak to each other for 2 years over a game of Monolopy. DDad knee he must be ill (he was) when his brother broke the stand off to suggest that DDad saw a doctor. I expect if DDad was well, they’d still not be talking.

PineappleDanish · 01/05/2020 20:17

I didn't know there as a film! May suggest that for tomorrow when they've all calmed down. (2boys one girl aged 9, 10 and 12)

We have given up on fun family games after Monopoly caused huffing and Mousetrap caused full scale melt down 😫

SpoonBlender · 01/05/2020 20:29

The film is excellent!

And Miss Scarlett is definitely cool.

BikeRunSki · 01/05/2020 20:29

If you’re looking to download it, the film is called Clue.

Windyatthebeach · 01/05/2020 20:34

We play scrabble only.
Except with ds 5 who is a bloody great card player!!

wanderings · 01/05/2020 20:38

If you want some other nostalgia, search for "cluedo game show" on youtube, to find the TV show from the early 90s, which had actors playing the suspects, who were then cross-examined by celebrity "detectives". They had some big names playing the suspects, such as June Whitfield as Mrs White, getting her words mixed up. "I was only speaking motapherically, and I secreted myself be'ind the curtains".

Hopkinsscar · 01/05/2020 20:41

It’s on Netflix atm. Watched it last night!

doughnuthole · 01/05/2020 20:42

But they should have been able to deduce that you had Mrs White & the rope. The one with the dining room, and the one shown the dining room, see someone else score something off. The only way that person (you, in that case) can know for sure what's been shown to eliminate it is if you've eliminated the other two therefore all of you could eliminate all three.

doughnuthole · 01/05/2020 20:44

Or maybe you just did a wee doodle on your sheet to bluff that you know what it was. (DS I'm looking at you).

TheBlessedCheesemaker · 01/05/2020 20:47

You need ‘exploding kittens‘ instead. Same meltdowns, but more fun.
