I am from Norway and we have got a british store called iceland food in Oslo. My british friends say that i should try spaggeti hoops because it is so popular in UK. So I did that. I don`t understand how it can be so popular. Do you like spagetti hoops? I just ate it from the box. Maybe I should add something more to it ?

Me and DS had them the other night. We'd had a really shit couple of days and they were so so very comforting. We felt like kings I tell you. I was only thinking about that evening earlier today. I would say it was our best meal we've had during this lockdown. And there is a high bar believe me. They were Asda smartprice as well!! White bread toast, butter (real), grated cheese + some more grated cheese, grilled till bubbly. Kings I tell you. Wink ps OP your English is excellent

pumpkintree · 29/04/2020 20:40

@norwegianWomen

Have you been to the UK before?

I don't like hoops, but beans are ok, preferences in my house are cheaper brands.

Prawn cocktail crisps are the best.

Cadbury used to be the best, now not so much. Can you get an biscuits like TWIX or KitKat? Is the shop your talking about Iceland Food, like in the UK?
they sell weird food here, like chicken tikka lasagne Envy not envy

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 29/04/2020 20:45

I don't regard it as food for adults.

Yurona · 29/04/2020 20:46

You have to be british to like them... You need to be raised with them.
i’m not british, and spaghetti hoops are disgusting.

VanillaSpiceCandle · 29/04/2020 20:47

I’ll take it one step further. All tinned pasta is revolting. I tried it a few times at friends houses as a child and it was disgusting. I didn’t much like baked beans but like them now, retried tinned pasta hoops and they were even worse than I remember slimy, tasteless mush.

If you can buy Cadbury’s Dairy Milk (milk chocolate) you should try it. You won’t be disappointed!

Musmerian · 29/04/2020 20:48

Don’t bother. They’re vile.

GeorgeTheFirst · 29/04/2020 20:48

They are a light dinner, not a breakfast, but in my experience eaten by small children, not adults. You could try Marmite ?

PorpentiaScamander · 29/04/2020 20:49

Thanks @ShowOfHands I'll try them next time I make a roast. I love the description of the 'control potato' Grin
I don't usually parboil my potatoes so will have to have a play around.
No bourbon in this house and I'm not sure Malibu or amaretto would work Grin

Skippii · 29/04/2020 20:52

Nasty

GreyGardens88 · 29/04/2020 20:52

Had them for the first time in years the other day, they don't taste as nice as they used to, they seemed very watery and tasteless, won't touch them again

Juanmorebeer · 29/04/2020 20:55

OP your English is very good. I don't really like them much but I would eat them on toast very hot with grated cheese on top if you put it on my plate.

safariboot · 29/04/2020 21:02

They should be served in the same way as baked beans. So on toast, or as a side with something like sausage and chips. I wouldn't eat them by themselves.

To be honest I prefer beans or ravioli anyway.

Queenoftheashes · 29/04/2020 21:11

It’s kids’ food so to like it as an adult you have to have the nostalgia that comes from eating it as a kid.
Mind you I tried that with Campbell’s meatballs and they were revolting no matter how nostalgic. Perhaps if they hadn’t changed the brand to fray bentos...

Seapink2 · 29/04/2020 21:14

@norwegianWomen your chocolate is the best in the world! Seriously, much better then our Cadbury’s crap that’s now filled with palm oil. I visited Tromso and came back with £50 worth Grin

bookmum08 · 29/04/2020 21:25

Everyone is saying 'they are a British thing etc' - but they have them in America too. They call them Spaghetti 0s.
I can't imagine these are the only two countries in the world who eat them.
And 'children's food' - pah. Says who?

BarbaraofSeville · 29/04/2020 21:33

Most Heinz products are not good. It seems to be an odd thing in the UK where slightly crappy brands are the most popular, eg Cadbury, Heinz, McDonald's, Subway, Greggs.

Your Iceland shop might also have Greggs pasties and sausage rolls. These are quite cheap quality pastries that are sold cooked in shops for lunch in the UK and are also sold in Iceland to bake at home. If you want to make a terrible meal that some British people might eat, you could serve your spaghetti hoops with a hot pasty.

Marmite is an acquired taste, even the makers acknowledge this and market it with the 'you either love it or hate it' slogan.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/04/2020 21:34

It’s kids’ food so to like it as an adult you have to have the nostalgia that comes from eating it as a kid

Plus I think they've removed a lot of the salt and additives that made them palatable, which is why they're not like how we remember them.

bookmum08 · 29/04/2020 21:35

I just looked the history up. Spaghetti Os were launched in the USA in 1965 and marketed as a soup. Heinz launched them in the UK (as Hoops) 4 years later. So American first.

MinorArcana · 29/04/2020 21:37

I hate spaghetti hoops. Always have. I wouldn’t advise anyone to try them.

And they ruin a nice slice of toast because they make the toast all wet and soggy.

TheSandman · 29/04/2020 21:38

@norwegianWomen May I suggest you try Mr Brain's Pork Faggots

www.iceland.co.uk/p/mr-brains-6-pork-faggots-656g/38475.html

They are something else.

TheSandman · 29/04/2020 21:44

I mean just LOOK at the quality ingredients:

West Country Sauce (62%) contains: Water, Lard, Wheat Flour, Modified Cornflour, Tomato Puree, Salt, Colour: Caramel (E150c), Yeast Extract, Sugar, Onion Flavour, Spice and Herbs Extracts (Celery),

Pork Faggots (38%) contains: Water, Rusk (Wheat), Rehydrated Pork Rind, Pork Liver (15%), Onion, Pork (4%), Wheat Flour, Salt, Sage, Spice Extracts

"Rehydrated Pork Rind" Yummmmmy!

Joking aside, they really are very nice - as long as you don't think about what you are actually eating - which is pretty much true of most British food.

Menaimum · 29/04/2020 21:46

they're like Marmite love/hate. I think they're filthy, I cannot understand why anyone would put that in their mouth OP, so it's ok that you didn't like them. I was not pleased when nursery and family introduced toddler DD to them and it was a relief when my child got over them at age 4. They put them on toast! ... but Brits eat chips with lasagna so they have form for over-carbing.

PorpentiaScamander · 29/04/2020 21:49

I'd say faggots are the dogs bollocks (that's a good thing OP) but it could actually be true Grin
Really wish I'd ordered some!

Toilenstripes · 29/04/2020 21:51

You’re right, they’re awful.

Yurona · 30/04/2020 06:56

@bookmum08 they also have them in australia - still disgusting though ;)
