I didn't realise she was due already. Baby boy born this morning!

Tony Blair’s children were all born in wedlock, weren’t they

Is that why he supported a cut to lone-parent benefits?

ducksback · 29/04/2020 17:06

This thread is really deeply unpleasant.

Alsohuman · 29/04/2020 17:12

No idea, it does indicate a lack of the hypocrisy Johnson displays, though.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/04/2020 17:17

He's on record with his very low opinion of unmarried mothers

But presumably not when it involves his own family - political hypocrisy again, you see

However objectionable, at least "illegitimate's" better than the historic alternative, but in this context it's not the word that bothers me but the colossal double standards the defence of its use reveals. In particular I recall it being used to describe Alfie Evans and the howl of mass outrage which followed

There's nothing wrong with slating a politician over their job performance, but when it comes to families shouldn't the same MN guidelines apply to all?

Clavinova · 29/04/2020 17:22

Hypocrisy is the wrong word -- he also wrote this in the same [1995] article;

"I blame male Tory MPs"...
"They have banged on about one parent families, while getting their research assistants pregnant; or they have been uncovered in French hotels sharing beds with other men; or that they have had their toes sucked"...

It was a satirical piece for The Spectator Magazine and ridicules everyone, even Tory MPs.

ducksback · 29/04/2020 17:26

Don't think that some of the posters on here would understand satire...

MaxNormal · 29/04/2020 17:27

Well this has all been a brilliant distraction from our staggeringly high death rate.

TheWordWomanIsTaken · 29/04/2020 17:28

HalfTermHalfTerm
He's not divorced. Johnson and his wife reached a financial settlement paving the way for the divorce.
I'm sure the press will let us know when he is.
I do wish people would stop trying to make this man sound like he isn't a moral vacuum.

Clavinova · 29/04/2020 17:31

He's not divorced
Yes, I think he is - his ex wife was able to apply for a decree absolute end of Feb.

Alsohuman · 29/04/2020 17:33

Doesn’t look much like satire to me.

diddl · 29/04/2020 17:36

I thought that illegitimate basically meant "not legally recognised".

Children are now though aren't they whether or not their parents are married?

Didn't it used to be the case that children born within a marriage were assumed to be the husband's & therefore his responsibility?

Alsohuman · 29/04/2020 17:38

Not according to this dictionary

dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/illegitimate

Clavinova · 29/04/2020 17:41

satire - not forgetting the piece was written 25 years ago;

"the use of humour, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues."

ducksback · 29/04/2020 17:44

Alsohuman why are you so determined to label this baby as illegitimate?

Alsohuman · 29/04/2020 17:46

Alsohuman why are you so determined to label this baby as illegitimate?

Because he is. Why are you so determined to deny fact?

dickensinthepark · 29/04/2020 17:55

The poor woman

She's had a baby, she's not waited from a distance as family members have died, she's not had emails updating on how much closer to death they are, she's not being struggling for money or getting food for her family. She's not a poor woman. Her married lover has been in hospital, probably because he was stupid enough to go and see virus patients without protection and shook hands with them all. He's a fool and he has caused at least 50% of the situation she is in.

randomer · 29/04/2020 17:57

They adore him on GN and will round on anyone and rip the to shreds if they say otherwise. Vicious bitches.

Helmetbymidnight · 29/04/2020 17:59

The word illegitimate may carry some baggage - but afaik it is the term for a baby whose parents aren't married - for people are concerned about such things (people like Boris presumably.)
Its hardly a big deal - my 2 were.

I still can't understand why this thread is horrifying, sickening, the people on it so nasty and vile, deeply unpleasant and, my favourite, have 'wizened souls'.

Ilets · 29/04/2020 18:01

She's had a baby, she's not waited from a distance as family members have died, she's not had emails updating on how much closer to death they are

She's had covid whilst heavily pregnant (or the baby was prem perhaps because of her infection) whilst her lover was in intensive care with a virus that is killing overweight men in their fifties at a fairly high rate, when the survival rate for anyone who ends up in intensive care isn't all that great

Yes, other people are going through worse. Poor them too.

MeganBacon · 29/04/2020 18:06

I thought that illegitimate basically meant "not legally recognised".

Children are now though aren't they whether or not their parents are married?
Exactly. Children these days are legally recognised when the father admits paternity or when the husband does. So it is an archaic term with nasty connotations. I'm left wondering if some of you people have moved on at all in terms of how you label people from ethnic minorities, or people living with disabilities. The gransnet comment just added to the whole tone even more.

CendrillonSings · 29/04/2020 18:09

Alsohuman

why are you so determined to label this baby as illegitimate?

Because he is. Why are you so determined to deny fact?

Actually, illegitimacy has no basis in law whatsoever. So you’re talking total rubbish. Hope that fact helps! Grin

diddl · 29/04/2020 18:29

Well yes, it might mean that the parents aren't married, but why would anyone want/need to point that out?

Bit like when people point out "the adopted child"-it's just irrelevant isn't it ?

1forsorrow · 29/04/2020 18:38

She had Covid symptoms, she said she wasn't tested and isn't referring to him as her lover as bad as referring to her as his mistress unless you're from Cornwall when all and sundry can be your lover.

JimmyTheWeed · 29/04/2020 18:41

I thought it wasn't due for another month yet.

Hedgehog44 · 29/04/2020 18:52

It's lovely news. A new baby is always a happy event.
