Any coffee “experts” about?

DH’s birthday next week and I want to order him some really good coffee but I don’t drink the stuff and have no idea what constitutes a good coffee.

He drinks it strong and black usually unless it’s instant when he’ll have it with milk. We have a good coffee bean grinder, a cafetière, one of those silver espresso things that go on the hob (I think it’s for espressos anyway).

Can anyone point me in the right direction of what to order please.

Skull Crusher are currently getting me through my work days, it was approved by my coffee snob colleague as well. Otherwise Inverness Roasting or Clifton Coffee are my favourites.

These guys do amazing coffee. What they have available changes constantly because they do small batches from small suppliers, but it's great. You can choose the grind you want, or beans. I recommend the Colombian they currently have, it's powerful but smooth and with lots of complexity, will take milk well (though DD and I drink it black)

Small Batch Coffee is really nice.
Although I think the thing that makes the most difference with coffee is grinding it freshly as frequently as possible, so get beans rather than ground.

It's worth seeing if any local, independent coffee shops near you are delivering.

What about a dripper and/or an aeropress?

In Italy, Illy is considered the best of the best.

My husband has been buying from Fortitude Coffee during the lockdown www.fortitudecoffee.com/coffee. His favourites are the El Sauce and the Fazenda strains. He also mentioned not to buy the kilo bags if you’re getting as a present because they’ll be just plain white bags. The 250g bags are beautifully designed according to him.

The nicest coffee I've ever tasted was a bag of Blue Mountain Jamaican coffee. It was a present - I'm not sure I'd buy it for myself!

Monmouth is really good.

I can't help you with the coffee as I'm a tea drinker but I bought my partner an Aeropress and he loves it. I do too as it's much easier to wash than a cafetiere.

Union coffee subscription has been our favourite subscription coffee so far!

For the Moka pot get an espresso grind or coarser grind for the cafetière

The actual coffee is a personal taste - some people prefer a dark roast and other a lighter roast. Try to find a supplier that has a roast date & get it as fresh as you can. Most likely a direct supplier - Peak Bean, Roberts & Co are the 2 I use. Roberts for their Italian blend and Peak for lighter roasts.
Alternatively buy him a grinder... a fresh grind of a fresh roast coffee makes the world of difference. You can buy them from £10 to £400. At the lower end it is a count and hope for the best on the grind size, at the upper end it weighs the dosage.

She said they've got a good one. Though of course it's a disaster if it breaks... we have a small Rhino hand mill just in case.

We get our coffee from Atkinson's in Lancaster, their website has some good stuff including kit such as Aeropress. They have a good selection of teas as well as coffee.
