Any coffee “experts” about?

DH’s birthday next week and I want to order him some really good coffee but I don’t drink the stuff and have no idea what constitutes a good coffee.

He drinks it strong and black usually unless it’s instant when he’ll have it with milk. We have a good coffee bean grinder, a cafetière, one of those silver espresso things that go on the hob (I think it’s for espressos anyway).

Can anyone point me in the right direction of what to order please.

Blue mountain is my favourite but like a previous poster it was a gift

Unescorted · 28/04/2020 22:58

Ha!….so she did.

In that case go for a small run roasting company to get a lovely fresh bean. Roberts and Peak are still both good - they sell whole beans dispatched on the day of the roast.

I remember Atkinsons of Lancaster well from when i was at the university there in the 70s! I loved that shop and it's great to hear it's still going strong.
They did (and doubtless still do) fabulous tea too.

I'd take a guess Atkinson's looks much the same, a bit like something from Diagon Alley.Grin

It does! I just looked at the website.

Wow just seen all the other replies. Thank you so much.

I think I’m going to go for the blue mountain Jamaican coffee, as two people said was the best they ever tasted. I’ve looked through each of the companies suggested and only two seem to sell it. Fortnum and Mason and Roast and Post. Would there be a difference in the quality from either? I’m leaning towards Fortnum and Mason because it’s a known brand and (rightly or wrongly) I think DH will be more impressed, but I’m conscious of the roasting dates as they aren’t mentioned.

I’m also going to order an AeroPress as well, thanks for the suggestion. DH loves a kitchen gadget so should go down well. Although, is there a reason he wouldn’t be able to use his new coffee with it, one of the options on Roast & Post says can only be used with a cafetière or dripper but then others don’t mention how it can be used. Finally, do you also know if there is a better option (other than environmentally) between the paper and metal filters?

The Aeropress will be fine with coffee he's ground himself.

The papers it uses are tiny, it will almost certainly come with one pack. DH bought a couple of metal filters but we've not got round to trying them yet. I'd think they're more faff to clean.

averythinline · 29/04/2020 10:07

Yes the metal filter is a faff and I thought it slightly affected the taste although dh didnt! Paper can go in food compost with coffee grounds!

Blue mountain is nice but quite a light style I would recommend pact as you get a range ... although Monmouth also good.... nice to head about others

Candyflosscookie · 29/04/2020 11:03

My coffee chum has a subscription, I'm almost certain it's the Pact one that has been mentioned as I'm sure I saw it in her kitchen (pre lockdown obv Wink) it had her name on the bag I think, very personal! She does like her coffee like rocket fuel and says they are good.

If you haven't purchased already from F&M try this independent shop in Lincoln. The Sumatran tiger mountain coffee is superb.

The service and quality are excellent.

Nope not ordered anything yet, I’m so bad at making decisions!

Monmouth is not delivering to me at the moment, well I couldn’t find them on the borough market website thing when I put my postcode in.

Thanks for the new suggestions, I’ll check them out.

I've just bought some from Amazon, Coffee Masters triple certified organic expressso beans. They are delicious and organic is the best to avoid pesticides. www.amazon.co.uk/Coffee-Masters-Certified-Organic-Fairtrade/dp/B00Q0CMKNW?tag=mumsnetforu03-21
